If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Hey there! Good effort anon! Keep in mind that the horizon line can move, but if your subject is sitting and also the convergence point things will inherently go lower. In small spaces like a bedroom the distances are fairly small, and unless we're seeing everything from above there's bound to be a lot of overlap. I added some small notes that I hope might help a bit. Your basic understanding of convergence points for 1PP is not incorect, just keep in mind that your foreground will naturaly appear much larger than other objects and still has a threedimensional structure.

Conclusion: I think the powder technique is easier to control, while if you're not versed in watercolors you will mess up. The advantage over regular watercolors is obvious, you can go in and detail more accessibly but at the same time it's probably best to use watercolors as usual and then using the pencils to add details. I like the powder as it covers the white of the paper a little bit quicker and it is ready to work as soon as you're done. Also it might be useful for drawing bodies of water, you can see it on the road I left just the powder layer and it very well could be a little stream or canal

Thanks a lot, I appreciate that. The reality is that most of my doodles aren't really worth posting, and that's mostly what I do nowadays. Also, I never really get a critique on any of the stuff i'm proud of, and I don't really want a critique on my doodles so I don't come to /ic/ very much.

As for a setting to put them in, they already have one! I write stories for my art all the time and upload that to places where amateur stuff gets read. I got into art and amateur writing at about the same time and have mostly been doing it hand in hand from the start.

To define a form, you'd first have to learn it.
Can't define what you don't know.

No one can tell you, everyone learns differently. You could spend the rest of your life drawing and only get marginally better if you're not studying effectively. The answer to "how much should I draw a day?" is always as much as you can without burning out or affecting your health. As someone said, practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

Fine then, what should I study as a main priority if I want to at least first get good at decently detailed character drawing with good shape design, good sense of anatomy, decent enough perspective knowledge to put them on various angles, good dynamism, a detailed enough art style, good hands and facial expressions, etc. as a first major goal? I probably won't ever consider drawing detailed backgrounds or machinery (outside of props and guns/armor) unless my character art is on par with at least a mid tier mangaka or the skill level I posted above. I am doing quick gesture drawing now, but I realized it's kind of useless unless you memorize the structure and main muscles of the body. Also switching stickmen for drawing directly simplified shapes for the body parts helped slighty as of late.

Hey Anon! Cool inks! Objects have local colours but they're heavily impacted by their environment. Things like bouncing light (light hitting other surfaces that reflect back their local colours on other surfaces) the colour and warmth of the lightsource and how solid an object is will always affect the colour of what you're percieving. The range of hues on a single surface can also vary a lot, something like treebark, that might innitially appear as "brown" might actually be different hues of gray, red and purple.

Colours also relate to one another, so sometimes we can "cheat" to make a picture look more cohesive or aesthetically pleasing. Red, for example, is a complementary colour to green, so sprinkling in a few disaturated pinks, reds or purples can make your picture more vivid.

I think the biggest issue in your current picture is information density and scattering. You have a really nice composition but you flatten the image by dispersing details everywhere. There's single little leaves in the background, single littke leaves on top of the main tree and a bunch of little clovers on the ground. Simplify the information in the back (so either committing to the inks and using larger strokes/white spaces, or taking advantage of the mixed media approach and letting the far off background "breathe" and imply it with just the pencil markers) so you can allow your audience to focus on the lovely snaking branches on the front, and that strong shadow that makes the plants under the bark stand out. If everything is detailed you risk tiring the person looking at your drawing.

Don't be afraid to push your contrasts, both with your inks and your colours. You have much better control of your composition that way!

I really admire your patience to ink traditionally like that! Keep it up anon!

Hey anon, don't listen to the guy saying you're too old and can't learn. You absolutely can. Maybe less efficiently but you will.

First things first, I have bad news and good news. Bad news is that everything you make for a while will look terrible, you're on one of the hardest stages of drawing. the good news, you will see progress really, really fast if you actually apply yourself.

Start with the basics. If you want to improve then take yourself seriously. Get proper paper and start with pencils, which are less punishing and will allow you to draw within the form. Ballpoint pens are hard to use for even very experienced people. Unless you're Kim Jung Gi (who drew for years and years) most people simply don't draw the way you do. We don't directly apply lines till they form something recognisable. Instead we break down shapes into forms. Spheres and boxes is how you need to start visualing what you're drawing, things like eyes and noses are forms slotting within other forms.
Getting a pencil and a blank slate of paper will allow you to draw inside your forms, to help you understand the shape of what you're drawing. Geting a blue pencil to do your very basic forms and then tracing your "clean" drawing with a pen or a graphite pencil might help you understand shapes a little easier.
Also at this stage, you simply have to look a little into a book or video on the fundamentals and put some time into it. When was the last time you drew before you made Beet Guy? The reason he might look worse is because you haven't really learned anything to help you draw a little more easier yet. You first have to apply principles and learn how to use them, and then repeat them till you get more comfortable with them. You didn't get worse, you just never gave yourself the tools to get better.
/ic/ isn't very good in general but the sticky is a great place to get started. Unfortunately it will take a little studying to get the grasp of the basics. Good luck!

Do you ever get the impression that it's all about perspective?
like, even when you draw something "wrong" if it's in the correct perspective it looks right
but no matter how much you study anatomy the proportions are going to look off if you don't know how big/long they look in this particular angle since everything exists in an imaginary 3D world, the left and right arm are never going to be the same size because of the distortion, the camera angle and the distance between the VP's (unless it's like a character sheet)
of course, anatomy is important, and gesture if you don't want your character to look like a stiff manikin, but at the end of the day Perspective might be the most important thing because EVERY LINE is supposed to be drawn at a specific angle because of perspective laws and if you don't nail that angle it's going to look weird (it doesn't have to be perfect but it's obvious when it's not correct)

correct

copying contours you see on an image means you always need an image, although its not a bad thing you got good at this

next you'll construct your image from the simple forms, then learn how to add mass to that construction to create the contours you used to trace

do this ad nauseum and you will stop needing to look at an image and instead you will be able to create a convincing image on your own
