While it's no Sargent or Waterhouse, what is not mastered here? Maybe composition is not that appealing.

George William Joy
He had the skills to pay the bills, but didn't seem to commit to making great work, just pretty good. How do you go from this to master?

smug permahighbegs who have never earned a dime of their art and cope by endlessly grinding fundies and scoffing at any art they see. they have zero creativity and they just doomgrind floating heads and figures from random pinterest references. these people usually don't even like art, they just got pity praise that one time and they confused the validation with actually enjoying art.

thats as close as i can get to profiling these people.

>> No.6381999

I’m sorry it’s just not an enviable style for 99% of artists. It’s not even what Bougereau did it’s just postcard art. The word most art critics use to critique these pieces is “sentimental”. Thomas Kinkade received the same criticism. Sentimentality isn’t a great thing in art, although it’s arguably the most marketable thing you can put into your paintings. It’s the same reason someone would commission a portrait of their baby or their dog. It’s not really high art… it has meaning, obviously, but in the broadest sense. It lacks anything personal to the person who made it. It is simply an art product. Like deciding what toilet paper to buy.

>>6381999
Again this isn’t to diminish the craft, just the overall artistic merit of the end result. I love all paintings, because frankly I love painting. But some speak softer than others and end up having more to say.

>> No.6382001

>>6382000
If instead op had posted the Joan of arc painting, would your first reply have been postcard shit? Can't you simply be as skilled as an old master to be one? Do you have to paint historical moments or myths?

>> No.6382006

>>6382000
NTA but how aren't those "sentiments" as well? People reactive to art differently. Why should certain opinions determine the definite worth of brilliance of a piece?

>> No.6382023

Feels like he is just reacting to the clothing style of the region. If George had traveled to Egypt and painted some poor family next to a rich one on a boat we can now say he is an old master...

>> No.6382129

>>6382023
Vermeer literally just painted his kitchen maids in his own house, yet everyone calls him a master these days.
Maybe Kinkade will be the main guy in 200 years?
