What's a good career for artists that allows enough time to actually do stuff with your art other than post on Twitter every couple days? It feels like every job is fucking designed to steal all my time away so I die accomplishing nothing but being a wageslave. Even actual art jobs like concept artists seem to expect 10-12 hour days on the regular. Even more frustrating is when I ask anywhere outside 4chan normies accuse me of being lazy and not wanting to work. I want an actual work life balance but that seems incredibly difficult to find

I'm an advanced code monkey, the kind with a bowtie and a vague knowledge of random stuff nobody really cares about, and it's pretty comfy. They even bought a tablet a few months ago so we could build datasets faster, I've been grinding bargue plates and anything acceptable at work during lunch break.

I still suck at it though, maybe you should move to a cheaper part of the country and work part time or something.

Art teacher (or teacher in general). Take note that you may have to go back to college to earn a higher degree in order to make good money. You also gotta like teaching in order to not go insane. But the hours, paid time off, and benefits can be amazing for you. I reccomend highschool teacher.

I'm currently working Desktop Support for 8 hours per day and I have two days working remote. That gives me some good time to doodle. But I still have to be watchful, lest I blow it hitting F5 on 4chan all day.

i work as a 2d animator from home. my contract says 8 hours but i can get everything for the day done in under 5 hours.

i spend the first 5 hours of the day practicing line accuracy and maintaining form while drawing, then the rest of the day is studies and creating personal work, sometimes with enough time to spare for playing video games or watching a movie.

Because almost every one is. Unless you're rich, there's very few do-nothing jobs that let you work on what you want on the clock, and overall don't overload your brain. Supposedly night-shift guard is one of those, though I haven't tried it.

Generally any job that is mental taxing is bad to mix with a hobby which is also mental taxing. I wouldn't advice a wannabe artist to become a coder to pay the bills.

Yeah I bet they'll be looking back on their death bed thinking "damn if only I worked more unpaid overtime I would die with no regrets"
>Supposedly night-shift guard is one of those, though I haven't tried it.
I knew a night guard that just went home to sleep and clocked back 30 minutes before the end of his shift. Another would play DOTA with me back in ranked mid 2019 with one match pushing two hours. I don't know of a greater indicator of a job that eliminated opportunity cost than someone who could play ranked DOTA relaxed and without any interruption and risk getting booted into low priority matchmaking hell with the most subhuman of Peruvians.

Unironically mcdonalds.
It is easy, You can make your schedule this is the important part make sure they know you need a specific schedule, say you have another job you have to do at certain times.
Pay really isn't that bad. Just try get put in the grill, front counter register is shit.
Another thing about grill is sometimes there is down time. If you stay on top of things , cleaning and so on, you can find time to draw.
It does help if you make some money from art already though for this to work.

I know people that's well inserted in the industry since decades, and looking at them you can easily extrapolate that you need to have more work hours than a wagie if you want to get more money than the minimal you need for survival
Being an artist is not only a very hard job, but also signing a lifetime long contract with being poor
Or if you're lucky, skilled and clever with your professional choices and you manage to make a bit of money, still you'll never be able to reach economic stability since you have to constantly hunt for jobs.
It's really scarily hard if you plan to have a family at some point, in fact I'm seriously considering to revert back to a normal job

I work 9 hours a day with a 45 minute commute each way. After work I lift 5 days a week and I can squeeze in 3 hours of drawing after I get home and make food/eat/clean. It’s an absolute crunch though and there is zero wasted time if I want 7 hours of sleep. I’m able to draw a bit more on the weekends, so in an entire week I total about 20 hours of drawing. I wish I could do more but this is good for now until I can find a job that’s only 8 hours a day and doesn’t have a miserable commute. I do miss doing other things sometimes though. It would be cool if I still had time for reading and video games, but that’s the sacrifice I suppose…

Before I could make enough through commissions I'd work as a server or barback/bartender. Those are generally the most flexible and offer the best money for something you can do extremely part time (I remember being working weekends at the bar then doing art work/study in time off)

Local coffee shop I frequent every day was looking for baristas and you only had to clock in from3 to 11 pm.
