he means closed species, some deviantart bullshit. Basically some guy designs a fictional animal which usually looks like a Digimon on meth, and then owns the rights to any variation of this animal, and you can only buy it from him or one of his friends who'll give him a cut. If you show up out of nowhere and start drawing picrel without an approved drawfag loicense you'll get blacklisted from most closed species communities but not the general furfag population apart from one or two absurdly wealthy furries who also owned a gay rainbow butterfly/cat/ninja chimera and will remember you from a list.

Usually there's a layer of roleplaying and access to exclusive discords when you own one but that's mostly turbo autism.

Here is what I think is going on. If their design was actually good other furfags would be copying it to such an extend that there would be nothing they could do about it. But because it is shit nobody else want to do it. Now these furfags got big egos so they need to convince themselves nobody else is copying it out of respect.
