(nta) I don't have anything personal against this guy and he certainly knows more than I do, but from having glanced at his channels since the start, he appears to me as a student learning art and then making lessons about what he's learning about.
Of course you could say it's the same for any artists in the end, so there's nothing wrong with that. I think I'd just prefer being taught by someone who has either a strong sense of style or a teacher with a certain history to them.

>> No.6372066

>>6372055
You're 100% right. In fact, despite his drawing abilities, it still feels like he's struggling to figure just how to draw. With that said, the benefit I'm looking at is, he seems like someone who spends a lot more time studying than creating. Cause of this, I want to believe he has the ability to convey the teachings he got from all his books (like Hampton, Bridgman, etc), and able to summarize that knowledge all into one sentence. And with his struggles, it's easy to convey that message very easily some it becomes more relatable to the students.
Though, I say this as a theory, I could be giving him too much credit here.

>> No.6372515

>>6372066
Nah I get where you're coming from. It's similar to Proko in the end, they can be good at organizing and conveying knowledge they gather in a smooth manner and for that reason they can be useful, regardless of their actual skill level behind the curtain.

With that said I could never get into ModerndayJaymes and it's probably because it feels too artificial for my taste.
In my case it's important to thoroughly get what the teacher is made of and feel the history behind the technique they teach. And this has really nothing to do with age really, for example this guy here >>6336925 is fairly young but you can get a good feel of where he comes from, what passionates him and how it comes out in his art style and technique.

any good video courses about arcs of movement and figure drawing in perspective?
Loomis doesn't teach this in-depth (pic related)
and most perspective books are about buildings and backgrounds, not characters

I want to know how long is the arc supposed to be, I always have a problem with extreme angles, most people just eyeball it, like
>"lol the hand is close to the camera so I'm gonna draw it super big xD"
but fuck that, I want to be precise and I don't want to rely on 3d models all the time
the only good one I found is this one from manga materials;

>> No.6372844

>>6372837
Good luck dude. Nobody does this. Everyone just eyeballs it. From lots of figure drawing practice, we develop an eye for what's right.

When you speak english you don't autistically calculate the grammar of each word, do you? The same applies to drawing. If you really want to be precise, say, you're drafting out a projection of an architectural space and there's a statue, then you need to start with the front, profile, top, and bottom views, plot out an accurate xyz perspective grid, and slowly plot out where each joint goes. David Chelsea's comic book perspective (which is actually very in depth) and Erik Olson's course are the only resources I know of that teach this.

>With that said I could never get into ModerndayJaymes and it's probably because it feels too artificial for my taste.
I understand where you're coming from with this statement. Having that said, I can also see how James can be a poor teacher since his ideas are so focus on what helped him, he wouldn't understand the struggles of specific students other than to do the exercise more. Which sometimes can help, but at times it can be a little more complicated than that. And that'll require a Really good teacher, one who understands the passion more in their craft, than someone who looks up the books all the time for their answers.

Quick tip, if youre doing Erik Olson's course, and you have Krita, the ruler tool has a divisions function in the tool box that equally slaces notches(divisions) how many times you want. This is important because Olson is teaching traditionally and divides the notches for measured perspective with a ruler, you have to find your way around it if youre working digitally and luckily Krita has a division function for the ruler tool. I also use the measure tool for accurate angles.

Its annoying, but very rewarding when you eventually find a solution that you didnt google for. Literally spent hours figuring this shit out on my own.

I am just finishing up Brent Eviston's The Art and Science of Drawing. Before that, I completed Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Now that I have a decent exposure to the basics using traditional materials I finally sprang for that iPad i've been eyeing for a couple years now. I got a really good deal on a used 12.9" iPad Pro (2020) and got procreate, but since i'm a complete beginner to digital i was hoping I could follow a course to learn how to use digital tools. It's okay if it goes over the same beginner topics such as form, value, light and shadow, etc since I need to practice all this anyway.

There are so many courses to choose from, after doing a bit of research i've found the following:

- CtrlPaint
- Med's Map
- RossDraws Digital Art Bootcamp
- Digital Painting Fundamentals by Jon Neimeister

There's still a ton I need to practice.

I've never done any Figure Drawing which I do want to learn since I'm very interested in learning character art. But even after the two beginner courses i've completed I still feel like a total beginner in terms of perspective, light, and form and i'm wondering if I need to continue using traditional materials with some other courses that dives into something specific to get better at one of those topics.

Maybe I can slowly do a digital course while also learning something like figure drawing using traditional materials and a different course?

feeling overwhelmed, what do?

>> No.6385810

>>6385695
>CtrlPaint
Good but uses a lot of layer-heavy, technical methods and is very Photoshop specific.
>Med's Map
Great course, but I wouldn't recommend it for a complete beginner. Photoshop focused as well.
>RossDraws Digital Art Bootcamp
Only seen a little bit of this myself. Doesn't seem like it's designed for complete beginners, but if you really like his style it should be fine once you've got the basics down.
>Digital Painting Fundamentals by Jon Neimeister
Best course I've seen. Actually teaches you the digital painting fundamentals thoroughly so you can apply it to different software.

If you liked Brent Eviston, you could do his figure drawing course as well. If you think you are not ready yet for figure drawing, going over the fundamentals again in a Procreate course wouldn't hurt.
There are loads of Procreate courses on skillshare/udemy/domestika etc. but the instructors aren't very good. Some YouTube videos on the basics of Procreate might prove more useful. Sinix and Ergojosh should be enough to get you started. Nikolai Lockertsen has two Procreate courses on Schoolism. His first one is for beginners and goes over some fundamentals, you can skip the animation stuff if you are not interested in that. Once you've got Procreate down, the best digital painting tutorials are in Photoshop, so you'll have to learn to adjust for Procreate. I would recommend Jon Neimeister and Med's Maps courses.
With regards to digital vs. traditional, that depends on your goals. If digital painting is you main goal, it's fine to just focus on that. A lot of traditional courses would work fine doing them digitally. If you want to do a mix of both, the skills transfer over so it's fine. As long as you have the time, doing two courses at once is fine too. The fundamentals overlap, so it will actually help. You can split it up, like 1 hours of trad and 1 hour of digital, or 1st day trad and 2nd day digital. Adjust for your preferences and goals.

It depends what you aim for with your art. Digital is just a tool, there's a lot of variety when it comes to process and achieved result.

There is no "right or wrong course / stuff to learn", if you go through that course you'll learn a ton of things and create experiences, which is what you need to do at all.
So if you need someone to tell you to do it, then yeah go through it all. You'll be quite more knowledgeable than you are now by the end of it.

I personally wouldn't do it simply because I don't like his style, though I'd still learn stuff for sure if I were to. I'd go with something by Marco Bucci if it were up to me, but that's based on my taste and what I know about my own inclinations; it's not an objective statement.

Viktor Kalvachev's Schoolism course is an excellent intro for anyone interested in figure drawing.

I personally believe in sticking to trad for a couple of years before trying digital art, but since you already own an iPad watch some basic procreate tutorials on youtube to get used to the UI and reproduce some of your trad exercises on digital to achieve some of the "muscle memory" you'll need later on.

If you never ever touched a digital tool I recommend learning a bit of photo edit on photoshop. Really basic stuff like tutorials on how to change a person's hair color, adjust contrast, clean up an image. It is a low-stakes way to get familiar with digital tools and what they can do for you. I feel it is easier to edit a photo than to draw a whole piece from scratch and THEN try to experiment with digital trickery.

How does viktors course compare to proko or Brent evistons figure drawing course?

Ive been doing trad only for about 2 year about my free time is so limited all I've done is Drawing On the Right Side and Brent Evistons class, plus I fully participated in inktober last year and this year using graphite only. So I have some trad experience but it's so scattered, and after DOTRS I wasnt confident enough to do figure so I did Brent's course which helped a ton. DOTRS doesn't even talk about construction at all really, learning a smidge about how to construct using basic shapes with Brent helped me a ton.

I think I'm set on taking figure drawing with trad materials next, and doing random iPad stuff slowly on the side (maybe I'll take a procreate specific course and just fuck around with it to learn that tool).

I do want to hone my skills with read still as I find it enjoyable, but Ive really been craving a chance to play with color/paint and I don't wanna do that traditionally cause honestly it's a fucking mess....

In the IC torrent there are 2 of Brent evistons figure classes.
Start with his gesture first and then go onto his volumetric drawing course.
Start with the art and science of drawing first before these two courses - which is also in the torrent

I believe they will both work fine. For me, proko seems a bit too generalised and fast paced and that’s not what I’m looking for.
Eviston is more calm, relaxed and talks a lot about emotional expression which is what I’m more into art for. I bought his course on Udemy ‘how to get creative’ and it completely jump started my emotional intelligence which was so desperate to come out of me & after that I’ve always enjoyed watching his videos as a beginner.

My recommendation for looking for the right course is to research the teachers art and see if their style and skill is something you want to match.

>>6404412
Take them slow and go back through it 2 months down the road because you will forget.
It takes ages for some of the simplest things to sink in.
Always remember that frustration will always set you 2 steps back

well i don't care about waiting for something to maaaybe happen or not happen at all 10 years in the future.
creating original stuff in the same way humans do is just counter to how machine learning works by its very design, and it's useless for corporate design or concepting on top of that, so it's completely useless to me.
machine learning can only generate content within the framework it has been trained on - and within that limit, to work decently - is reliant on an abundance in input of preexisting image material.
i don't have to work with those limits, and having a little less rendering makes that freedom worth it.

yea but i inherently do not want to create images that are already out there in large quantities. and only those give "good" results. anything more niche inherently has less images and consequently gives shitty results. it's by design, so this cannot be fixed. it's not a bug or a deficit to be filled- it's literally the main feature of machine learning. do you understand that? if you say "but there will be more images that are the exact thing you want to draw", i will no longer want to draw it - precisely because it's overdone at this point.
so it just becomes more attractive to just draw it myself instead, it's easier that way because i have control over the entire image straight away instead, and am free to try combinations of concepts and poses i want, instead of hoping the model incidentally generates the pose/perspective/colors/light situation/environment i actually want.
so why should i care?
despite the rather shady way the machine is trained, i can still see how people who don't draw can have fun and experience their own version of artistic freedom while using it. but to me, it's just a novelty toy and has nothing to do with what i want...

painters went practically extinct once photography became widespreak, then once the novelty wore off, gradually came back, but in smaller numbers. Anon, lemme say why I don't care about AI art:

I want a consistent, and appealing art, so I can create sequential visual storytelling like animation, and comics.

AI art can't do either.

Ai can only pull pictures from its database, and trace & mix and match them.

Ai can only build on already existing art, and that's too limiting to my goals.

Unless a new type of AI comes up, and said AI works like a real artist (no need for database, and tracing, just real intelligence)

I won't bother with current Ai, nor AI in 2 more weeks, or 10 years, I need a real AI that works like a real person to come to, only then I'll give up art, simply because there's no point in learning art in this sceneario.

But you also have a database and mix things. Everything you create is based on something else, even unconsciously. The human mind works similarly to ML models. It's just more complex. AI models are developing right now every second. It's getting more complex by the minute. This is just the beginning.
