If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I am improving slowly in general those last few weeks by drawing often and without missing a day, but I also noticed that I am getting more skilled in doing finished pieces rather than quick drawings (I rely heavy on construction in general for now). Especially in Drawpiles, I can notice how the artists more experienced than me don't really rely on construction much, but rather they simplify all the fundies they learned and apply them to 5 to 20 minutes sketches. I feel like this is what separates a beg from a legit int. My question is: is rgkg something that should be learned on it's own, or it's better I continue studying fundies the same way I've been doing recently and produce way more mindful doodles and sketches to build mileage at the same time? Pic related are my DP doodles from yesterday.

based on the 'how to foreshorten?' part, it seems you know some fundamentals in construction but not applying it to perspective, so, do that, use the knowledge you have to try different things, see what works and doesn't, look at what other artists do (not here)

basically just use what you know but try new things, push into areas you haven't yet; as you gain more knowledge and confidence, you'll know how to construct things in more simplified manners just from frequent practice and understanding

ok so i just pulled ruler out of my drawer.
I think i figured it out
if i hold it horizontally obviously both my left and right eye look at the same thing
If i hold it vertically however my eyes will see a bit of the side
lets call that side bias with a 50/50 bias on both eyes
if i turn it to the side slightly then i get more bias on the side that is closer to my eye level.

If i use one eye like a camera i can obviously tell it is a ruler even when it is directly facing my eye.
I don't have issues dicerning this but people did have issues with that in the discord.
Could it be because for quite a while i lost sight on one of my eyes due to an illness?

this place is terrible if you want to get feedback, the vast majority don't draw or only draw anime from reference/tracing

but yep, that's the internet now, you can learn anything yourself but the idea of community to grow and improve together is pretty much dead; your best option is to find some physical or online course (or life drawing sessions) to attend in order to get genuinely useful feedback and find likeminded individuals

if you aren't interested in doing either: your best bet is to just practice like mad and find as many influences to look through in order to see what you're doing wrong and what they're doing right

i am not sure what you are trying to ask, but humans have two eyes for depth perception and if there is object covering 1 eye (and your eyes focus is in distance) your brain "merges" the vision from both eyes so you can see "through" the object as if it was semi transparent. well anon I would say flip it and zoom out, then look at your ref. From my personal perspective I think the left side is a little 'overdone'. Like you tried to capture the curves of the abdomen and the protruding side of the hip there, but maybe perhaps you should have placed some of that ever so slightly higher up? despite the leg position it does appear that the hip is rotating off its axis just a little. and for the right hand side, her waist looks a little thin, so either the left side is protruding too much, or the right not enough

Decided on this piece because it was mostly undone so I could add more of my personal preferences; for example the original artist had a flower pattern I was unfamiliar with, so I changed them with something I see everyday, more desert/arid type.
Besides that, more emphasis on the armour while the original artist mogged with plant growth and superior strokes.
Main reason is because he used tools I had access to so easy comparison.
Blog off; but he had a neat blurb about the whole situation of creation and a gallery thing, actual artists do a lot.

Thank you anon, I had actually learned about non-pure whites and blacks from watching Marco Bucci paint things. It's crazy how sometimes the colors you see only appear that way in context with the colors surrounding them. Like things that look white are actually peach or a really light blue.

I sort of understand darks/mid tones/brights but if I try to select colors on a wheel, even when referencing an image, I'm off by quite a bit and end up with a much brighter image than what I intended.

I feel like my art skills have decreased pretty badly, been trying to get into reading KtD and when I draw on paper everything goes alright, I make sure to look, hold and draw and also blind draw (still trying to nail this down). My drawings on physical look ok, still at beg level but if I showed someone my drawing I could at least accept their compliments and I can somewhat understand what I can do to improve it
But when it comes to digital drawing it looks really bad, it's like I started from square one. I don't know how to improve on that, I understand that it's better to do pen and paper before digital but when I compare my work I can't see any of the minor improvements that I made on paper transfer to digital.
How do I improve this? Is it just the fact that I need to continue improving on P&P and hopefully I'll see some sort of results or is there something else I should be doing on top of that?

a lot of digital drawing is down to the brushes used, they play a big part in how something comes out, much like it does with traditional where a ballpoint pen might not offer the same range as a sketching pencil

if you feel your pencil drawings are definitely higher quality to the digital ones, it may be that the brushes you're using just don't really suit you

>if you feel your pencil drawings are definitely higher quality to the digital ones
Let me describe it like this, my pencil doodles look better than my digital drawings. But my best pencil drawings are still pre-beg to low beg level. So it's not too much the fact that my pencil drawings look fantastic, it's more so that I can never transfer what I've learnt through physical over onto digital and I get frustrated since it should be a natural thing to happen.
Might just be the fact that I still need to work on the very *very* basic art stuff.

you're definitely getting ahead of yourself with the colouring side of things when you're still in the stage of learning construction

get yourself an actual sketchbook to draw in, something either A4 or A5 is ideal, since it should be enough space to draw big and get some construction in; printer paper still works but the more you draw, the less paper floating around you want

do the same things you're doing on paper in digital: construct, make things 3d, but don't get too ahead of yourself and try to shade and colour until you improve your 3d knowledge

the more you construct and draw, the more you'll start to notice you're itching to do more, that's when you know you're ready to start adding more to your drawings: learning to shade and adding a light source, this is a little different in digital given you have many more options regarding how you shade something, so start doing it on paper first as it will somewhat translate into digital

one thing: if you notice you are not using construction to draw, stop yourself and start using shapes to construct, avoid symbol drawing entirely, again you'll start to feel that confidence appearing as you study and you'll slowly introduce methods that cut corners because you know what you're doing without needing to go the full extra mile

>when you're still in the stage of learning construction
Yeah I had a feeling I needed to work on that, don't entirely understand how that goes and I'm not too sure what books/ videos I should be going for when learning for about it. I previously went through DaB but stopped 45 boxes into the 250 boxes challenge.
I've also just started watching Michael Hampton's Analytical drawing and I've tried doing some figure drawings, none of them have been successful but they were fun to do.
>get yourself an actual sketchbook to draw in, something either A4 or A5 is ideal
I've been meaning to get a proper sketch book for a while, I do have two of them but they're lined and I've heard that's not good when you want to draw. Just trying to find sketchbooks that are not only not lined but are also not too textured so that it'll make the ink run out faster.
>do the same things you're doing on paper in digital: construct, make things 3d
I'll try to but I'm still kind of unsure about how to do construction properly, I understand that it's about breaking down everything into basic primitive shapes and then building up from there (I think?), I'm not too sure what to do after that regardless of if I'm doing it on paper or digital.
>but don't get too ahead of yourself and try to shade and colour
Will do, ditch the colors and shading until I can actually make a 3d shape.
>one thing: if you notice you are not using construction to draw, stop yourself and start using shapes to construct, avoid symbol drawing entirely,
I'll try, it's just hard to try and construct when the shapes I try to draw are really rough and don't look right. But I'll try to.
>the tablet's fine, you just don't know how to use it properly yet
Ok then, I'll keep to the tablet until I get better.

read hampton's book on figure drawing, he breaks things down into shapes in a very easy to digest manner, it's a great starting point that should propel you into the next stage with some relative understanding of how things should look

https://anatomiaartistica.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/michael-hampton-figure-drawing-design-and-invention-1.pdf

copy the examples, find references, draw them with that construction

also look at other art once you've got a decent idea of construction, look at how others shade and build volume around those shapes, very slowly ease yourself into it, don't try to shade a full figure, just do studies on limbs and then slowly begin to shade them and learn one step at a time

otherwise you'll overwhelm yourself and burn out due to confusion and stress over how things aren't turning out; there's no rush to get good as much as /beg/ and /ic/ want you to believe, do it step by step

I would spend less time drawing from real life / photos and spend more time copying artists you like a lot. Their art will give you more usable abstractions for the nose, and will be easier to understand. This still applies if you want to draw realistically, just study from realist artists. Use the Loomis method and study your anatomy still, just include this master copy practice along with it.

I've noticed this phenomena for years but only just got reminded about it today; the click. Where a shitty artist who toils away working on crappy pieces for months, maybe years, just miraculously starts pumping out 10/10 artworks. I'm not talking about a slow and steady rate of improvement, i'm talking in the span of a couple days/weeks they go from zero to hero. Curious to see if any of you anons notice this too, I've no idea what causes it besides maybe a change in mindset (waking up and feeling very prone to experimenting, far more than usual perhaps).

Larger brush size for blocking in then smaller for blending transitions (maybe you need less opacity/more transparency?), at the moment you have a lot of smaller visible strokes. Your core shadows should be more darker in some places. Anyway, have you tried rendering the basic forms yet?

i believe he does briefly mention the importance of it, but if not: you'll find many other artists do, because it forces you to get into the habit of building shapes in 3d in different perspectives; when you don't have time to do full figure drawings, but enough to throw out some basic shapes

Alright then, I've always find myself drawing some boxes when I get some free time and I sometimes do rough perspective homework from DaB. I'll try finding some good exercises outside of that though, can't only be drawing boxes sine I heard that spheres and cylinders are really important as well.

the hampton book i mentioned goes into a few methods of constructing the body with boxes and cylinders, it'll guide you a bit

just remember that this will take time, you won't read the book and copy its examples and suddenly be capable of drawing, it's something that you have to stick with and keep trying, seeing what you're doing wrong but then realising how to improve it

like any skill it's all about the effort you put in to improve your understanding; that effort doesn't necessarily bring results overnight

Alright then, I'll make sure to keep an eye out for those methods and try to do those for exercises.
>You have to stick with and keep trying, seeing what you're doing wrong
I feel like I might have a little bit of trouble trying to self-evaluate what I could do better and what I did wrong but I know I can always just post some of my results here if I'm really stuck.
>just remember that this will take time.
>like any skill it's all about the effort you put in to improve your understanding
I know that it'll take time, but I'm sure I'll actually *understand* that when I'm 30 figures in and losing my mind when I can't get the figure right without it looking wrong or when I can't properly get a shape to look right.
Again, thanks for helping me out and giving me some pointers on what I can do to improve. I'll make sure to dive into the D&I book
