>I start overthinking it and adding too many lines, or too many details, or defining things too much.
Usually when I feel lost or try to understand how to draw a cute thing, I look towards my inspirations or just try to figure it out myself. Ovopack and Aruurara are my usual go too if I feel I'm doing something "off". Otherwise, sometimes your sizes can be off.
I tend to underestimate just how big the Eyes need to be in order for the drawing to look "right". Pic here is the face mask I usually go for when drawing cute-like characters. I mainly do animation, so keeping the construction important is a big factor.

>> No.6348837

>>6348829
A lot of it does just boil down to seeing what other artists are drawing that one considers 'cute', and then doing a form breakdown to figure out what the rules are that make it such.

Eg. Size of head relative to torso.
Size of eyes, spacing of eyes.
Shoulder-to-hips width ratio.
Flatness of face (eg. cute typically has shorter muzzles or next to none)
Less definition (eg. omit lines that show musculature)

I want to get back into animating one day, but I need to up my speed first, which'll only come if I bother to lock down a style I like for the task. I float between looks too much as I explore.

Thanks. I think I just need more practice.
On a somewhat unrelated note, does anyone have any resources for hairstyles? Not not necessarily tutorials on how to draw them, but an actual list of hairstyles. Like a ponytail, or a bun. I want to expand my library of more exotic styles, because god knows I can't think of them on my own.

Fuck it, fuck learning all this anatomy bullshit. I am so tired and stressed about not being able to draw like furry picasso.
That's why I have given up trying to be perfect. I don't care about all this art studies bullshit.
I am perfectly happy with only being able to draw line art. I should accept my existing abilities and be happy with what I can already do.
Fuck treating art like it is a second career and not just a hobby
I'll enjoy being a casual artist and that's final
Sure I can't draw porn but atleast I can draw passably cute cartoons.

>> No.6349008

But anon, that's perfectly fine. As long as you draw, you'll get better. And no one says you have to get good at or even practice rendering beyond lines. Do what makes you happy. You seem to have figured that out for yourself though. Most of that stuff comes naturally anyways, as you draw more. That's all you gotta do.

Not really, tho seeing 90s cartoon-like anthros living in the same world as pic related might come out as ridiculous to some even if they like in different countries and the likes. Almost all my OCs are part of the same world story-wise, and seeing how a lot of people laugh at stuff like Kingdom Hearts for the stylistic clash between characters or the ducks in Glorantha, I wonder if inconsistency could put some people off.

you're officially in that valley where artists at your skill level will crab and ignore you, but artists above your skill level will overshadow you because normies will think "why bother with your pics when theirs exist?" It's like the uncanny valley or artistic ability right before you take off. You'll get small growth here and there, but what you need at this point is to get people to commission or retweet your work that have large followings.

Hang in there and keep improving. It's the shittiest phase of artistic growth but the fruits of persistant improvement will come. Once you're able to draw stuff that no one else can those crabs will come crawling back to feed off your artistry. Don't emulate, iterate, and you will succeed- good luck anon!

Trying to up my speed and dawdle less so I learn by doing more vs. fixating on trying to fix a slightly busted piece of anatomy. 2hrs start to finish, which is still slow for a single character rough -> inked & flats. A better way to look at gesture studies are ways to understand what you hyper focus on.
For example, say you did a 10 minute gesture and try to complete as much as the drawing you can in 10 minutes. Once the time is up, see what areas look the most "complete" to you. This should give you an idea of what areas you focus way too much on, and what areas you don't focus enough on. Practice the areas you tend to avoid in order to get more comfortable with them. From there, speed will come to you as it'll allow yourself to complete the entire drawing without too much worry on very specific areas.
In short; you spread your attention to the entire image, and not the half you feel the most comfortable in.

I've been sketching on/off for a decade and a half and I'm still crap at anything involving colours. I can do b&w value studies 'ok', but anything more than that, nope.

A good artist is someone capable of taking criticism, especially when posting in a thread SPECIFICALLY for seeking it. Ideally, someone who has even the tiniest fraction of humility as well, since art is a journey that never stops. When someone has glaring flaws in their work, and continuously shrugs them off, no matter how good-intentioned the advice, and then gets mad and calls people retarded and stupid, you can't blame those trying to help for becoming a little irate. He's the epitome of "it's just my style".
Go ahead and browse through that guy's history in the /dig/ threads in /trash/. He spammed the threads looking for praise, but his style needed some serious development, and he was making basic, fixable mistakes. He was told as much, and then he proceeded to ignore the advice, and keep posting his Fischer-price, Pinocchio bullshit, while insulting the people in the thread. So no, I'm not going to turn the temperature down. He deserves to be ridiculed, and he deserves to be told to fuck off, because he's clearly not an artist for the sake of art. He just wants clout, and since he can't get it, he resorts to having wittle tempew tantwums.

Fuck him, and everyone like him. I don't care how bad your art is as long as you're putting in the effort, but I draw the line at having a shitty fucking attitude.

Trying to replicate is fine, I wasn't disparaging it as a learning technique. I just never do it myself. I probably should to be honest.
I do study painting techniques/strokes and the like to try and ingrain them in my mind. So I guess I kind of do that, but I've never intentionally tried to replicate someone's stuff.

Tracing/copying/whatever is fine as long as you're using it as a study technique and not passing off the work as yours. Referencing is always okay and should be done whenever possible, even if it's just to check if everything's in the right spot.

It's what one's intentions are that cause it to be a topic for discussion. The issue on why the topic tends to be questionable is the intention of being lazy or working off another's own efforts. Jealousy and greed are rooted in the ones who commit these acts; it's why you see so many entry level artists turn to methods that only spite their being and Art itself (Or it could be those who can't do art). Social media has also caused this issue to grow over the past few years, and I don't think it gets better.

References I use (as far as Even-toed Ungulates go) Marmalademum's cows are great, anatomy-wise, and I like to use Karno's old torso he gave to the anthros in his Farm strips. The ones with the very round and pronounced hips/ upper-leg.

It's not worth posting with how little I use it, and I don't like my old shit. Lots of stale/basic poses and lacking any defined look/style. Mostly just been hoarding my wips/studies/shortstacks and posting the odd one I feel isn't complete crap in a thread here, or in some of the art-focused groups I'm in.
Really need to get off my ass and grind the muscle-groups to aid in drawing certain body parts better.

You'll get criticized the more your art looks like one specific artist.
Trying to do it all yourself and not take any inspiration from other artists is stupid, but it's just as bad to look like a copy of someone else, since they'll just be you but with more experience.

No, I think it's more to do with changing trends. Like paradigm shifts. Twenty years ago, furry art had a way different look to it than it does now. Twenty years before that, even more so. Times change, and people's tastes change, and if you work in opposition to that, you simply might not get the same amount of attention, unless you do it really well. You still can, of course, get attention, it just might be more difficult.

With a bit of study and practice you could definitely make it. Like the other anon said, it looks a bit flat, and the pose could be 100% more dynamic. But it's not a bad attempt, and any finished piece is something to be proud of. Don't ever bemoan yourself for trying.

I thought those kinds of batons were more old fashioned than retractables? I like both of them. Standard for it being iconic and retractable, well, you have already mentioned, swinging them open. As for the artwork. Thanks. I'm a permaprebeg myself. I probably should've made the pose a little more schizo with shit like foreshortening. Still have to get a stronger foothold in drawing more complex 3d shapes than just cylinders, boxes and other deadbeat stuff i suppose..

>>6358733
>any finished piece is something to be proud of. Don't ever bemoan yourself for trying.
Thanks, but i don't know chief. It's really hard to cope with the fact that something that took me two or three hours to draw looks worse than someone's deadbeat rough sketch done in five minutes. This thread is a perfect breeding ground for my art related brainworms and such, this is why i don't post here often.

>> No.6358750

>>6358743
No, there's definitely something wrong with the way it's drawn. You might be able to arch your back, but it looks broken in that pic. That's like a 45 degree angle. The problem is the tummy, which generally forms a smooth curve when bent, opposed to the back which can crunch. You've got both constrained, which makes it look broken.

>> No.6358755

>>6358749
You shouldn't compare yourself to people who can make great sketches in five minutes, because they've put likely hundreds if not thousands of hours into drawing. They all started off where you are. No one ever begins as an expert, even if they have so-called "natural talent". It's 99.9% skill; you just have to hone yours.

I do think this but unironically.
Oftentimes I see highly skilled technically interesting art, but I only look at it for one second and then I forget about it. Because while it may look technically amazing, it has no soul. On the other hand, oftentimes I see a low-skilled beg drawing, but I look at it for fifteen minutes and then I save it. Because while it may look technically shit, it has SOVL. Art is meant to be looked at, so from my point of view, soul is more important since that is partly what makes you actually look at a drawing. Of course, you still should have to try to improve your technical skill, but what I'm saying is that technical skill alone isn't necessarily going to get you far.
