I think a problem I had at the start, which I think I am starting to solve, is wanting too much and burning myself out and losing my passion. I completely skipped the habit building, or the development. But, I think the mindset I have right now is the right one to get myself out the "draw X hours every day, burnout...rinse and repeat" and that is to just start small, go lil' dicko mode.

So my idea of starting small and building a habit is by going back to the roots and drawing 30 minutes a day, after like 2 weeks I will bump it up to 1 hour. After a month of drawing for an hour daily, I'll bump it up to 2 hours. Then the next bumps are just gonna be 2 month periods until I reach 5 hours to which I'll do 90 days... which is how far I've gotten in my planning and is where I will leave it since I know I gotta be flexible and shit because nothing is ever the same a few months down the line.

In essence:
You should never go straight balls deep into drawing multiple hours per day if you've never done that before. Create habits, strong habits. Achievable goals and most importantly, keep track of it all. Have a tally mark.

Also, the gang stalkers that have been standing outside my window and watching me draw you can go find the nearest police station and turn yourselves in. Fuck outta here dawg.

Thoughts?

Exactly, so just draw.

for me it's really just about removing all other non-productive things that take me away from drawing. Make drawing for fun the easiest thing for my brain to latch onto. Uninstall games that waste hours and hours of my time, block doom scrolling websites. Listening to music or finding a new album to listen to whilst drawing also helps. If you're drawing some sci fi stuff then listen to something sci fi. You don't want to make it a chore so why not make it fun. Basically make the "habit creation" easier for yourself.
Also aim for creating an end product of professional quality all the time.

I wonder if focusing on "I must do x amount every day" is part of the equation of burning out. That usually leads to me ironically doing unproductive studies of the same thing every day brainlessly just to fill up time instead of jumping out of my comfort zone towards my goals.

I would say focus on the artist(s) you want to be like and find an enjoyable process to become like them. "Apply yourself"

>I wonder if focusing on "I must do x amount every day" is part of the equation of burning out.

I have had that thought so many times, but it can't be it. I am not strict with my time, I do my studies and then move onto doing stuff I know I should like doing -... I don't actually know if I really enjoy doing what I assume I would. I like seeing the stuff I try to "do", so maybe it's just that there is a clear distinction between the two (seeing vs doing) that I am again too retarded to have considered.

I mean to be honest I write like a highly intelligent person, but it just seems like my intelligence hinders me in actually concentrating like some autistic pro artist would for hours on end on what I wouldn't spend hours on. I don't have anything I would enjoy doing for hours on end except maybe video games, but even those I put down after an hour or two. That's why I want to make this habit thing work. You guys got to believe me, if you don't then you shouldn't be spending your time outside my windows.

You say you want to add more social options but think about it seriously, if we're getting only a dozen people joining DAD challenges, then that means after you make your website DAD will get only 6 and your website will only get 6 too. So, to posit the question, should DAD be more open to social options?

Recently in the feature thread it was stated:
>No. DAD is not Twitter/Facebook. We're not going to encourage people to fixate on likes.

But something like 'likes' don't inherently encourage people to fixate on them unless there's some sort of front page or feed which push highest-liked posts to the top. Farming likes is all up to the user and someone being influenced by some of their own posts getting less likes than their other posts, or comparing to their posts that of others' is all in their own head.

Of course this is just one feature consideration.

then there'd be even less people to migrate. The point we're making is there's plenty of users but no active sense of community.

I think it's worth trying either, being open to new social features or starting a new site - obviously the former being preferable. I propose we have nothing to lose in trying, failing, and removing new features than to have a stagnating/dying userbase.

The lax pose belies a great deal of inaction, almost as if dead, but the the rosy coloring of the skin assures us that they are merely resting or sleeping. The pure white background and the black leather couch implies that we are in an office of some sort, which typically has strong air conditioning. Combining that with this person's lack of clothing would suggest that this person is cold, and therefore would have a much more restful repose if we were to lend them a jacket, or other cover. >> No.6375029

Nicolaides wrote the book to be a replacement for traditional art college education in his time. This includes the rigorous study schedule expected then.

Do you have three hours a day, five days a week, for twenty five weeks, to spend solely on exercises? On top of independent studies? If so, then you are probably better off doing a more modern study course, that better reflects the tools available.

Still a good book, though.

>>6375025
Here, lemme translate the exercise for you.

1. Get three references.
2. Look at each reference for thirty seconds each.
3. Hide the references, then spend about a minute doing a gesture drawing of what you remember.

Checking your work afterwards is optional.
It should be fairly obvious how this exercise improves your visual memory.

thanks for your insight.

>> No.6375109

>>6375029
practicing "visual memory" is useless if you don't have a developed visual library.

I think it's much more productive for a /beg/ to sit on a single pose for 10-15 minute and try to condense it down to a simple and prominent gesture.
It's one of the reasons why I hate doing sub 1 minute gesture studies, your brain doesn't have enough time to locate the major forms and realize the rhythm between them.

>> No.6375116

>>6375109
I think there's a gap in expectations or perspective here.

The "visual memory" you seem to be thinking of it the long-term knowledge of subjects, like sitting down to draw a fish from memory. In which case, yes, doing longer-form studies of the subject you are interested in is useful.

The "visual memory" relating to the exercise I posted is short-term recollection, which is valuable when using a model or reference, as time spent looking at your reference is time not spent drawing.

>> No.6375155

>>6375116
My claim is that there's very little for a beginner to recollect after looking at a ref for 30 seconds. When you have an established visual library it's much easier to internalize a pose because you already have reference points in your brain you could equate it to.

To give an example, the exercise you posted is as hopeless as showing an English speaking person a sentence in Mandarin for 10 seconds and asking them to transcribe it. If the person did understand Mandarin, they could at list get the gist of the sentence without even reading all the words, and fill in the gaps from memory.

6375206

>>6375155
Once again, there seems to be a difference in expectations here.

Your recommendation, which seems to be what the book calls "an extended gesture study", is more powerful IN GENERAL at learning how to draw. The memory drawing is better SPECIFICALLY at improving your ability to recall what it is you are drawing. Which of these is to be recommended depends on what the person asking desires to achieve, but, in a vacuum, I would trust the person who made memory drawing exercise number 8, and extended gesture study number 31.

>> No.6375219

>>6375206
All that you've said is agreeable if the subject is an artist that already has a baseline level of skill and fundamentals.
In the case of a beginner specifically, the "extended gesture study" would still be beneficial without requiring any previous experience, while the memory drawing actually would require pre-established visual library to be productive.

To put it in autistic video game terms: the "memory drawing" exercise you've noted would be locked further down the skill-tree, and the /beg/ would need to acquire a few pre-requisit skills to unlock it (i.e. for it to be actually beneficial for them).

>> No.6375225

Anything called a "skill" has subskills, and those have subskills, and so on. Everyone is free to pick whatever they want to practice, but many things aren't useful right now, like learning to drive a car before having access to one, so we would lose them before getting the benefit. Thus, "skill-tree". However, what skills you can benefit from is highly variable between people. What is locked for you is available to me. So, when asked, the common advice given is for the overall skill, instead of the specific subskill.

Our argument appears to be that you think that this exercise focuses on subskills that aren't immediately useable to new artists, while I think it helps to train seperate skills that synergize well even with new artists.

In short, You = Pure Artist build, Me = Hybrid Artist/Thinker build.

I've been less than beg in skill for two years now since I focused on the flashy things like rendering. But, I can't draw or draft to save my life. After seeing that in the past 34 weeks or so, I probably wasted 1221 hours on YouTube mindlessly consooming videos, I decided to face the fact that I'm dogshit and begin from the fundamentals. After this post, I'm gonna start the boxes since clearly, I can't even draw boxes.
