So I've heard this, but what's the story? I've been just been doing this here this year since it seems like a good way to get 31 drawings done in a month, and it's fun seeing what other anons are doing. I did it on Insta prior years, but you just get lost in the massive amount of posts, and there's hardly any solid interaction.

I think it's a matter of inspiration and habits. I'm a big fan of Deathburger, Geof Darrow and Moebius. I replicated a lot of things by studying these, including saturating the canvas with detail. I guess it became an automatism after doing it for years. WHAT to (specifically) draw in areas is often context dependant, but also composition dependant. There are time where you don't want to fill certain area to create some sort of rythm in the visuals.

>>6345321
This is >>6344835. I think part of it is influences (I'm also fan of Geof Darrow and Moebius and also Arthur Adams). Part of it is understanding my limitations (I don't like how my crosshatching turns out so I prefer to use details to communicate values rather than hatching). Final part is readability, but this is more of a gut thing for me. Sometimes I just feel a part of the piece is missing something (in my "bluff" pic, the troll looked too blank without the skin blemishes). Hope this helps.

It was not said as a bad thing, it just really amazes me because my art is very clean/devoid of details, and seeing this ability to fill everything with details without running out of ideas is what I find puzzling.

>I will consciously try to make over-detailed drawings for a while, as an experiment
Go for it! I think this is a great time to take risks. Couple things to keep in mind as you experiment. Details draw the eye, so if you aren't careful they could distract from the main subject of the piece (but they can also guide the eye to the subject). Work in stages, each stage adding more details. Also, details are a good way (esp. in ink) to turn mistakes into "happy accidents"

im sorry i misunderstood. to give an idea how i personally go about it, my fairy one would be good to talk about since that was put together mostly piecemeal:
>pencil in fairy giving candy. lollipops are typical candy imagery, so go with that
>want my three characters to be expressive. young boy is kind of pushy, so hes up front. tall boy is older, so more apprehensive
> want to fill in the foreground, so decided to do children also eating candy. gives the idea of a "living" world. also kids are fun to draw
> think it would be funny to have the tooth fairy in cahoots with the dentist, so decide to insinuate a dentist building in the background. also funny to me to have an ominous dentist shadow just standing there menacingly
> make loopy letters to go along with lollipop swirls. add lights to five it a "carnival" vibe
> start inking foreground and midground. i want the fairy character to be slightly ominous, but not "evil" so keep hatch shading to a reasonable amount
> chose to go with bricks for the building, as its common facade work for buildings like that. think of adding ivy for foliage and interest, but decide against it as it would look too cluttered
> brick inking is a typical style ive done before, just using a tried and true, low-effort brick shading
> decide to add a little screaming boy in the far right window to fill it in and it makes me smile
so, as dumb as it sounds, im kind of making up a "story" as i go, and that helps me piece it together. another popular artist who does this is bob ross, just watch some of his vids and he makes up a "story" for it as he goes. also, weirdly enough, meatcanyon is also good to watch as he has a similar wandering train of thought as he does his sketches.

Day 28. Leaned a new thing. If you use the liquid latex type resists when doing alcohol ink washes after inking do not put the ink washes down heavily. It can cause the resist itself to seep into the top layer of your paper (I was using Bristol rather than watercolor paper). If this happens when you try to remove the resist it will remove the top layer of paper and take any line work with it. That's what happened to the moon in the upper left. It seems to be fine if you just do light alcohol washes and let them dry between though. Watercolor paper may be a little more resilient.

Day 31 is done!

My Inktober run is over lads
31 days, 31 posts, did my best
It's a hell of a challenge, and will surely be doing it again next year
If you are still on it, don't give up!
And if you are done, congratulations!

Overall, some good prompts, but also some bad ones that are too specific.
Hope you had a good one lads

Wash looks good. I too struggle with streaky washes when using alcohol, but you can mitigate that by using a little water or just doing water + ink washes. The streakyness is because the alcohol is evaporating really fast. It's a double edged sword. On one hand it keeps the paper from buckling, on the other if you're not fast enough you'll get streaks in large areas. It's great for building up localized shadow quickly without over wetting the paper though.

I noticed that when I was working with. I had heard about it drying faster but was surprising how much faster it is. Sounds like I need to plan out the washes to accommodate.
>>6355248
>wet the paper first and then apply the paint
I've done that on a couple and it's worked out well. I'm not using the best paper for it right now, so I still get some buckling even if I tape it down. Still, may be worth doing wet-on-wet with water for large areas and then come in with alcohol to build the localized shadow, etc.

Thanks, fren!
October was a bit of a disaster for me. Six days I had to spend with family for funerals and weddings etc. People came when they should've stayed at home because they were sick which resulted in me getting two different brands of colds. And of course work-related stuff for eight hours under the week. It wasn't a great month for finishing a drawing per day since they take around 3-5 hours each. I could, of course, just make smaller stuff or just studies of things and call it a day but for me personally there's no fun in that. Congrats on finishing, and nice ending too.

Mirin dat brickwork. It is a pain to draw repeating patterns where you also have to have variety in order to not make it look sterile. Really nice job.

Day 27: Snack.
This one is related to the lore of the show, the pies are poisoned and turn people into grass sculptures.

Day 29: Uh-oh

UH-OH INDEED, my workload, which tripled in October, is now quadrupled in November.
Good for business, bad for drawing.
But I'll finish this goddamn thing, tomorrow is my break day, hope to get 30 done and 31 at least planned.

I have a bunch of pics by Yacek Yerka saved, I just didn't know they were all by the same guy. Neat, miniatures are my favorite subject and stuff like >>6376941 awakens an instinct to collect in me.
