Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbKqIJcIUCw

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I don't know how to make my studies look anything close to the original image. I feel like I'm not learning anything and it's showing. I don't have any work to show because I deleted it all out of frustration, I'm just venting now. I always somehow manage to draw the angles or rotation of the figures completely differently. Either I'm completely misinterpreting what I'm looking at or am just awful at translation what I'm looking at to my side of the canvas. I'm really impressed with the study at the bottom of this image, I couldn't get that sort of 1:1 replication to save my life. Granted, I'm still a beginner and am lacking in understanding of a few fundamentals, but still.

I'll give it another try later once I'm calmed down, but fuck

have you watched krenz? he has 2 translated lectures now which explain how to study from references. both lectures cover the same topic but provide additional info.
>old one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbKqIJcIUCw&ab_channel=Krenz%27sArtwork
>new one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgjx6y6B_G8&ab_channel=Krenz%27sArtwork
in the old one he shows techniques on how to study references: find and simplify shapes, find and draw guidelines, use grids and axis, tackle perspective in great detail.
the new one he glosses over some of the techniques taught in the old one and focuses on how to study references properly, find and simplify shapes, how to draw in perspective from refs and how to analyze references.

both lectures really helped me. now i can draw some disney cartoon tier stuff pretty accurately and some small errors made in proportions, but comparing with how i used to draw the difference is massive.

seriously check both vids out.

>>6341440
I guess there is this guy. You shouldn't even be trying to ape that level of construction yet, just focus on drawing the simple shapes that make up whatever it is you're looking at. An anime head is a circle sitting on a triangle or a pentagon. Eyes and ears go at the middle of a level head; eyes move down the circle/sphere if the head tilts down and the ears will appear to be higher than the eyes. If you look at yours next to the original head, you actually lowered the height of the skull to keep the eyes in the middle, but they have to move down because she is looking down—the head stays the same size

According to Krenz as a beginner its best to focus on the line work and shape composition before going into rendering. He ranks the difficulty of studies by three levels:

1) western cartoon/stylization - They are composed using simple shapes and little to no complicated contours are involved in the process of making them. They will help you grind shapes while training memory recall at the same time.

2) Anime/manga stylization - The reason being it is close to realism in style and the outer contours may be a bit above one's level on average.

3) realistic - These contain the most complex lines and shape composition according to Krenz.

Finally, he recommends starting out with western art studies, then little by little warming yourself up to anime/manga studies, and once your comfy anime/manga will be your norm then you can challenge yourself with realistic studies.

What settings do people generally use for drawing anime stuff digitally? Like, canvas size and brush size. I've only ever drawn traditionally.

>> No.6350602

>>6350583
There's no specific number, but as a rule of thumb you want to draw much larger than the size you post, to minimise imperfections. Even traditional comics work the same way.
Some people draw on a retardedly large canvas, and that's usually to ensure very thin and smooth lineart, and it's better for zooming in very closely for details without things becoming a pixelised mess. Sometimes artists either forget to resize or don't care enough to do it, and you can check the Danbooru absurdres tag for some examples of that if you're interested.
I personally use 2k pixels minimum because I don't zoom in a lot, but it's definitely on the small side for this stuff and even then I always enlarge the sketch if I decide to polish it. Other Anons probably work much bigger from the start.

this is the biggest problem with copying, what did learn here? not much desu, if you copy the image enough times you might get something similar to the ref, and if you go full autismt, you might get something really close, but then again is just a copy, can you draw that picture from a different angle/pose/source of light or different charcater, not really, so you learn basically nothing. you should learn how to create and understand that picture from zero rather than just copying the final product.

I just showed the way you copy things accurately, that envelope method is the exact same thing Krenz describes except in nice plain English instead of a longass Chinese video. The way I phrased it sounded a bit like I told him to copy Bargue plates himself, but that's just bad wording. Not that he absolutely shouldn't, anything helps as long as you're training accuracy. But that's also the reason you might as well go with cartoon drawings you're interested in instead of plaster cast drawings.
Like I said, doing accurate copies to train your eye is only one way of studying stylised pictures. A Master Study and a Master Copy are different things.
But copies are definitely the most straightforward for a beginner, since you don't need a sense of form to just place lines where you know they're supposed to go.
On top of that, the careful observation of good drawings that comes from those exercises can do more for developing a sense for how to express volume on a flat surface than all the aimless box grinding in the world. And the better you understand that, the more fruitful those exercises become and the more you're able to get even from a looser study that doesn't follow all that enveloping and plumb line business.

What is the ideal head size to body ratio for anime? I notice the head height for some anime girl torsos is 3 heads, but then others it is a little more like 2 heads and a bit. (Note: I am only talking of torso length, from top of neck to crotch.) I feel like anytime I do the 2 heads torso length, they look like weird bobbleheads in a way anime girls don’t, but then the 3 head torsos look too “realistic body with anime face pasted on” for my tastes.

I don't know about these artists but I appreciated listening to these videos (although the second one could've been more concise). If you're feeling down due to AI and what the art scene is like, I find it refreshing to listen to what other artists have to say about AI to broaden your perspectives and get in touch with what got you here in the first place.
You can listen in 2x as you sketch or something.

>Even Pixiv is full of AI "art" now [...]
I'm bothered too honestly. I've been browsing pixiv over a decade and it's an eyesore to see that crap in the ranking, but at the same time these stuff really are of no value 99% of the time (and the 1% I speak of is really just ecchi stuff that somehow turned ok, nothing truly original).

To answer the question, my view is that every artist is unique. Even an asian artist who tries their hardest at imittating some other famous asian/pixiv artist won't become them, they'll still be their own iteration with their own unique artstyle. So AI or not, in the end the only thing you can do is becoming the best version of yourself, which AI will never be able to do.
... well until they steal your art, but we're entering another topic here that pertains to legality, ethics, etc.

To be honest my construction is kind of a combination of a few different methods I've come across over the years. I go straight to contours in places like the legs, but need to block in the placement and orientation of the legs/elbows/ribcage... sorry, it's hard to explain as I tend to just eyeball things

picrel is another thing I did a while ago, using some anime figure as a ref.

Doing great! I'd say her face is a bit rounder than what you have but everything else is roughly correct. One thing to note is that the eyelashes are not drawn with one thick stroke, but with thin outlines to make the shape, and then filled in with a dark grey. If you keep this in mind and use a thinner brush, you'll do even better.

It looks like you copied over the red green and blue grid you made on the reference image over to the side you draw on. In my opinion that cheats you out of the goal of the study and messes up your proportions specifically on the body, the ears for the face... and the hair bead to the left.

I wish I had studied more traditional/digital art instead of spending all my time doing pixel art when I was younger
Now I have to spend hours of my time to just try and imitate the appearance of tradition/digital art and it still comes out looking souless.
I love the way mangaka like ogadenmon, bonnie, and Nora higuma draw their women. they look so soft and look like you could just sink into them. I have to do alot of annoying and tedious anti aliasing to replicate the softer gradients that come naturally to their medium.
Atleast it's got a cool distinct style.

This faggot is click baiting for views so hard.
He traces the drawing and photos in the videos but doesn't tell you that in that in the thumbnail or beginning. He does this intentionally to make his thumbnails look like you can learn to draw like those artists in "one quick trick", all while using the artwork he knows is extremely popular to get idiots to click on it.
None of the concepts he explains in that video or the Raiden Shogun video are new or groundbreaking, it's literally just knowing how to use basic layer functions and boils down to "haha copy another artist like a monkey". For him these might be useful because he'll get the experience of what works in an illustration and trick people into following him. Doing the lineart and having the drawing not look retarded is literally like 80 percent of what makes anime art look good, so him tracing literally gives you nothing in terms of actual growth.
I'm actually tempted to make a rendering video since so many people usually ask me about this and I kinda want to call him out on this bullshit content
