6294147 No.6294147 [Reply] [Original]

This thread is dedicated to master studies, where you copy artwork you admire as a form of study. They are the quickest way to improve and learn about any fundamental you are having problems with. If you need to work on your hands, copy hands from other artists, and if you're having trouble with rendering, make careful studies of paintings with lighting you admire. Studies can be quick or long. You can even copy anatomy books like Bridgman, Morpho, and Hogarth. The type of studies you want to do depend on your personal goals and the types of problems you are grappling with.

Artists of all levels are welcome. Critiques and redlines are encouraged.

Can someone explain why these are considered related to the master study general?

If you are serious about art I have a discord channel where we take courses from various schools like Brainstorm, CDA or Peter Han's owrkshops and share between ourselves afterwards. If you are willing to put your Syn Studio courses in the pile, you'd be welcomed there. You just need to be serious about it and not a joke like 99,999% of IC.

I was wondering what kind of construction Renaissance artists did for anatomy, but I can't find any. Did they just draw it, no construction or anything?

I could either give you a 5 minute answer or a 5 hour answer, and I still wouldn't be done talking about it, because this is quite a vast subject. Yes, Renaissance artists drew with construction, just look at the sketches Michelangelo did on the side of this drawing. You could've told me Hogarth / Bridgman drew it and I wouldn't question it.

Drawing is form, and that's all it is. Learn to control form, and you can draw. Da Vinci's arms there are just basic cylinders, each muscle fiber has been simplified into a further cylinder. Those veins / arteries are cylinders, and. the shading is cylindrical. The knuckles in that hand are balls connected by boxes, with smaller balls on top to represent the knobs in the knuckles.

6330305

>>6330227
Here is a rougher michelangelo drawing. See how each muscle is a simple shape? It's not a wobbly line that he made by observing the contours of the model. This drawing here might as well be a collection of lego pieces. Every shape is a stretched / squashed / deformed sphere / cylinder / box. But that doesn't mean the drawing is formulaic. Please remember that. The Loomis head is formulaic, because you use the same forms and shapes every single time, but Renaissance drawing is free. You can use an egg for the rib cage, OR you can use a box. It's up to you, your choice of form is a creative choice.

Look into Vilppu / Robert Beverly Hale for more

>>6330338
You are already drawing the Bridgman studies very accurately, just apply the same skills to life. Look for plumb lines, angles, shapes, etc, and do it very often, so you can be accurate by instinct instead of mechanical technique. What you ultimately want to develop is your eye, not your ability to use a knitting needle to xerox a good drawing.

Aside all that, you really want solid constructions much more than "accurate" drawings. Pic related is a Glen Keane figure drawing from life, which is 100% not literally accurate, but accurate in a 3d anatomical sense.

he lists exercises to do throughout in addition to the studies. Like he basically tells you to copy bones and cylinder still lifes in the anatomy and value chapter respectively. I'm going through it now, for a first pass I'm just trying for half the studies per chapter - some are extremely tough - look at the rembrandt in chapter 2 or the da vinci in chapter 1 - and you'll probably want to try them on a second read through. Vandruff apparently has gone through the book a dozen or so times.

Pick up Master class in Figure Drawing and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters too, they are dirt cheap used on amazon and are basically further study / analysis into anatomy + loads more studies.

Gonna be honest I procrastinated starting this second pass for like three hours. It's definitely daunting, but I'm just going to take it one drawing at a time and grit my teeth through the pain lol. Take it slow. I spent 30 min on one drawing when I first did this, 5-10 min staring at it, drawing it in my head, then getting down everything as quickly as possible. The process gets easier, since bridgman uses the same lines for the same body parts, by and large, so you will begin to have a dataset of Bridgman shapes in your arsenal. You could probably just do one drawing per day if 45 min is all you have per day, at least for now.

It gets easier too when you get to the body parts. The full figures are the toughest to memorize

i tried doing a memory drawing again too, and it is really frickin hard. It's much easier to draw it first, then put away the reference, then draw it from memory, but I wouldn't recommend doing that for this. Just looking at it, then recalling it, is also a good exercise. Looking at your drawings again, I think you retained a lot of Bridgman's shape language, you just need to pay attention to the internal relationships in the drawing, getting the construction and proportions right. It's inevitable you won't remember it 1:1, but a 90% hit-rate is pretty good too. Also, there's nothing lost in doing it again, like you were saying.

Last chill day, tomorrow is the proportion chart. I'm still getting filtered by non weight bearing legs but I'm getting closer. I like the corrections method, it gives me something to draw in a moleskine or on the back of an envelope. Testing yourself throughout the day, like an /ic/ Cato Fong

I'm sorry if I'm begging to be spoonfed but I wanted to know if anyone here had any resources on trying to copy with the goal of understanding appeal. I think the closest thing the that might be kirk's philosophy on drawing from art as if it was a live model but I'm not sure.
maybe this shit seems obvious but I'm genuinely autistic and even if I can make something technically decent from a study I feel like I'm going proko mode when I'm without reference. it's like I don't understand what makes things appealing.

I don't really know where to take this question but since I am exclusively working with traditional tools and want to reach a proficiency in realism, I've come to this thread.
I was asked to do a portrait with 3 people, I could just paint them side by side but maybe a a more interesting composition would be better. What would be a good approach here? How do you compose an image with multiple people where the face is going to the most important?

To be honest, I didn't learn as much as I would have liked since I was so focused on measurements and stuff (which I think I got better at because of this). The main thing I noticed is the variety in how Frazetta constructs his figures. It was interesting constructing a figure using shapes I would have never thought to use. From this, I can tell my anatomy skills are still not enough since I'm not confident enough to render forms that deviate from what I already know.

>> No.6348524

>>6348065
You could paint them side by side, but then you'd have to vary it up in other ways, like giving them different expressions, or looking at each other in wry ways, sly smirks, etc.

That is, if you don't want to make one face more important than the others.

I would've softened some edges on the right shoulderblade. And also soften some edges where light meets shadow like on the but cheek and at that light patch just above the butt, on her side. softening it would make it look a lot rounder.
Also, I'd lessen the contrast in the background just a bit, so the figure pops out a little more.

But still, whether you wanted this input or not, I think you did a lovely job on it.

I agree, his variation and control of soft and hard edges are very subtle. Another issue I had were the proportions. The photo I took makes the copy lose some hue and vibrancy but the copy is still somewhat off from the original, especially with brighter values and curtains. No worries, thanks for the input, I'm always eager to hear critique to get better.
>>6317915
Amazing, I put them side by side and it looks great. I'm sure the difference between the hues is due to camera quality. Only nitpick would be it looks like Frank Benson uses a bit more dry brushstrokes for added texture? Other than that awesome job, really.

Michelangelo proportions fucked me up. Real wake up call. Need to study more and slow down. Big time, this felt like a huge step backwards but instead of being discouraged I'm going to be glad that I have a clear direction for what I need to improve on. Everyone in this thread is doing great. To be clear my attempts are marked with an 'o'. Yes, it’s very difficult, and in reality, when you do this exercise, half of it is pulling from your own knowledge and drawing from imagination, and the other half is the short term memory from looking at Bridgmans drawing and putting it away. I’m not saying to not be accurate to Bridgman, but I’m saying to also focus on constructing it properly as you go along as if you were doing it from imagination. For example, when doing proportions, you don’t need to use your short term memory to know the crotch is halfway from the head to toes, and that the ribs are bigger than the hips. these are things you should’ve known. (I don’t mean to be so harsh)

That said, I love your mindset and how hard you’re working. I’m glad your making those corrections after and redoing attempts you weren’t happy with.

Wow, what a difference your advice made. In the first attempt I was falling apart trying to memorize the strokes, realized I was drawing like absolute shit, so I sat back and took a breath and tried what you said, just focusing on solid construction and finding the "bridgman" at a later point. WOW. I know it's nowhere near perfect but I hope it speaks for itself, thank you anon. I tried another attempt after this before checking the book but I didn't end up liking it as much, so here the page is after remembering your advice and before I made all my corrections notes. Maybe this weekend I'll do a re assessment of a couple drawings, picking two or three things I really wanted to improve on. Dunno yet. But anyway, thanks again. I hope to keep improving

Okay thanks!
Here is it, I just started not too long ago. Each took approx 2-3 hours (it's embarrassing to admit it but I did ask an art instructor about timing and they said to take as long as you need)

I did these in 3 layers, first blocking-in by eyeballing, then using plumb lines, and adjusting as I go. I heard this is the correct way to do Bargue.

Most of the time I'm using plumb lines, angled/tilted lines, then look for negative, trapped shape imagine them as creatures or objects or sth, and flipping the canvas randomly when I'm stuck.

I don't use the comparative measurements as much as the aboves, and did not use it at all for my third eye. I think this measurement method is hard and kinda niche somehow...? Should I use it more often?

Thanks. And apologized for the long post.

I decided to quit copying manga pages 1:1. It's just not an efficient way to learn. Minute by minute, I learn much more from doing targeted practice like this, the way David Finch teaches it. I guess I should value a comic artists' advice on learning to draw more than the Shonen Jump Editors, who themselves don't draw.

im flattered, thank you for your kind words. I personally feel like I haven't been pushing myself as hard as I could, but that will have to change really soon. I'm graduating soon, and I don't want to NEET it out with my parents for too long

>do you find that you are learning when copying from the source material even if you dont have a specific goal in mind?
I think it's impossible to do anything without a goal, but your goal can be as simple as "I want to draw my figures like this artist does" You may not have a long term goal in mind, but you need to decide who your favorite artists are and what you're working towards. That will also help you keep consistent and prevent you from flitting around and drawing from one artist one day, then another artist the next day, etc.

If you're asking about my internal monologue when I'm studying, then, I don't. I just draw it and try to be as accurate as possible. This makes it difficult, sometimes, for the studies to translate to your personal work, which is why I do the memorization technique. Draw it from ref, put away the ref, and draw it again from memory. This will condition your hand to make the same shapes when you're making your personal work.

>do you find that there is a speed where you move too fast to learn?
Yes, don't go so fast you can't be accurate. Even if you plan to only take your study to the "basic forms" stage, you should be accurate. No point in being sloppy. Take as long as you need for one drawing

>are you the original Bridgman anon?
Uhh maybe? Lol. I started doing this in like May of this year I think.
>This is your second go, right?
Yep, the memory run.
>What's your process right now?
Observe, draw, note mistakes, drill mistakes on scratch paper while doodling. Not a whole lot of structure.
>Thanks for all your input, fren, you're an inspiration to us all.
Honestly this thread has helped me so much. Thanks for all the kind words, that goes for everyone ITT. WAGMI as long as we stay on that bridgma male grindset

Why did I fail?
Me? I can't draw, I can't paint, I have no talent.
Art? It doesn't pay, it's all fake, worth nothing in the end.
Hard work? Bullshit, wasted 7 months, 8 and 1 year. Nothing.
I did the effort, the hard work, the daily practice, never got better. Only enjoyed 3 days out of the whole ordeal. I would never do it again, the bullet will enter the brain on Dec 31st.

6369028

Every single day at night, on my bed, I cried. There I knew I would never be good at art, never. As I kept crying and crying I would run out of tears, my mind too would cease to work like a human mind, no, replaced by complete peace and silence.
My eyes were open, but I saw nothing. My body was not my body, just another piece of meat, I existed there, as nothing in nowhere. Why fear death? Why fear it if such a peace like I feel in those moments will last forever? My tears had stopped completely, there was no I, no person in the flesh, no reason to cry, I didn't move or if I did I do not remember, I had been nothing.
Slowly I would fall asleep, and the next day I felt rested, like born again, my ego slowly forming back.

For the first time in years, I'll be sincere.
If I wanted to turn it all back and improve, could I? Could I become actually good? How?
I was checking Edward Hopper's practice, I just want to be an artist.

Thread's almost at bump limit anyways, I'll bite.

https://davidfinchart.com/where-to-start-and-where-to-go-from-there-a-roadmap-to-professional-quality-art/

This is the most straightforward guide you'll find. If you do it sincerely it'll be another 2 years, but those years will be wildly productive.

Yeah, thanks, I think the perspectival distortion threw me a little, plus that one's a little janky, the longer you look at the raised leg sort of the less it makes sense.

My visual memory feels so poor that I actually started worrying I had mild aphantasia lol. I hope it gets better with practice.

You can repost it again in the next thread.

You did much better on this one today! I would focus on making cleaner lines, even in the memory sketch. If need be, use a pencil underneath, that way it gives you room to correct your mistakes and refresh your memory
