6292086 No.6292086 [Reply] [Original]

The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

>> No.6292088

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

Interesting. >1. Does anyone have any advice on drawing good (enough) looking BGs fast?
Depends heavily on what you consider to be "good enough", but it really boils down to having a basic understanding of perspective (can be learnt from any one of the thousands of 5minute basics of persective videos out there) and an understanding of the "anatomy" of the location you're trying to portray (that is to say, know what it is you're actually drawing, specifically). The rest is just drawing it. If your feel like a "good enough" background must look clean, then draw it clean. If you don't mind it looking messy, then draw it messy. If you feel it has to be photoreal, then grab yourself a photo and get settled in to spend hours just on that one background. Ultimately, it all boils down to drawing a lot of backgrounds.
>2. Anyone got insights on how Azuma Kyoutarou works? I checked out his Twitter and I think he does his manga digital? idk for sure.
That looks digital to me. The bits in my pic look like he just used the same brush but bigger, which results in the texture/randomization blowing up as well which creates that super jagged look that you don't get with actual ink. My (digital) line work is quite similar, albeit nowhere near that good. He just has very good line control (see: the quick sharp straights used to hatch the top of her breasts) and a very strong understanding of value. He probably does his line work quick and dirty, but it works because he's very skilled.

Learn about atmospheric perspective (not that complicated) and how to simplify values. Like in this Franklin Booth piece, the background is made up of like 3 maybe 4 values, you could crank out something similar pretty quick using screen tones etc. This can still work for closer, non-landscape backgrounds if you stylize and simplify. You can also get away with a single contrasting tone or simply not having a background for like 90% of panels. It's important to keep thinking "is this even necessary? Does this help or add anything to the story?" Editing isn't just for writing.

That's something you worry about as a child on DeviantArt, not as an adult writer.
A character being "too" important or special isn't a problem, pointless self-insert wanking and lack of conflict is.
Characters like James Bond and Conan are cartoonish levels of gigachad but nobody would complain about that. Their stories still have stakes and a possibility of failure, things can actually go to shit for them.
Special snowflake protagonists leading boring stories where no real problems ever happen are a problem, sure, specially today with webnovels, but you shouldn't think of it in Mary Sue terms specifically, since it comes with a lot of online amateur writer baggage and I wouldn't take writing advice from the kind of TV Tropes-browsing Nostalgic Critic-loving window lickers that obsess over that kind of surface level understanding. Just read more, learn about what makes a good story, and you'll never have to worry about it.

There's no training wheels drawing software, and no software that's so complicated it would actively get in your way as a beginner. The amount of options and tools might seem daunting, but don't feel like you should immediately know every function. Learn as you go. "Style" is a stumbling block for more aspiring artists than not. You get obsessed with having a style before you learn good fundamentals, and then you stagnate on that style, because style is just your unique exaggerations and shorthand. But you can't exaggerate what you can't properly draw, you're only guessing, so you can't make any improvement beyond that. I find that it's difficult for people to "unlearn" bad habits and a bad eye.

Even exaggerated and stylized, all highly regarded comic/manga artists have solid fundamentals that they branched out from. Nobody started with a "style" who ever went anywhere with it. You see Araki started with a stolen "style", but only got better and developed his own as his fundamental anatomy and perspective improved. That style he started with was a dead end and didn't actually help him because he didn't get to it through the same path of learning as Hara did, he just copied the end result. His improvement came from studying Roman and Greek statues.

Yeah, no plans to print at the moment but I figure it's nice to get used to the idea. Anyway, since there's multiple templates around I figure there's no real reason to stick with Deleter templates. I guess they do need big trim zones in the middle for thick tankoubons?

The experience can vary a lot (stick to experienced publishers/groups if you can), but if you can get in to one they can be fun. There's a sense of comradery that's hard to find elsewhere.

Pay also varies, but a good one will give you anywhere from 50-75 usd per page and will do bonuses based on preorder/crowdfund sales. Not the best rates, but anthologies are really just a way to get experience working and have published titles under your belt.

I could red line it, if he wants me to, however I am at work, so is uncomfortable to do it from the cellphone.

Clearly better as they had more time than me and therefore presented a finished piece, unlike my 20 sec fingerdrawing. Isn't it obvious?

There's a difference between using and not using reference sometimes the difference is huge even in the same artist.

Now if we're talking about getting humans to feel something, then clearly the fact that I've sparked a controversy days after posting puts me in the effective category.

Do you even know about New Yorker comics? I've been looking at them since the 1980's. Many of them are drawn at what you might call a "prebeg" level.
In the spirit of what I posted above, please understand quality and effectiveness of image creation are occasionally mutually exclusive.

Having said that, manga and comics usually hold a higher standard.

>how bad of an idea is it to make a coloured comic/manga
Bad idea, it's hard enough to finish things on time. But if you're not worried about pushing work out frequently then go nuts.
>does it really make your workload much more?
Yes, to a degree. Some bits can take less time with color, but it gives you more to do before a page is finished most of the time. Plus it adds one more hurdle for you to stumble at, namely color choice.
>everything has to be perfect or else it looks like scribbles
It shouldn't have to look perfect and if your stuff either looks perfect or like scribbles with no inbetween then something is going wrong somewhere.

Save money with my current comic job while storyboarding my personal project in my downtime. Once the job is either completed, fizzles out or I quit I'll switch to my own thing full time. At this point I have almost everything I need to make a living with comics, I just need savings and to actually make the comics. Right now I work during the day and work on my storyboard during the night, so ideally after a few months of this I'll have a nicely refined storyboard to work from whenever I have the opportunity, or to even take to a publisher if that seems like a good idea at the time.

Study from storyboard artists and practice. The Famous Artists Course has a particularly good chapter on the subject, but in the end, it's something you learn by doing rather than by reading. Certainly, you won't get anywhere by waiting for a eureka moment on an empty page.

This is the hardest part when you're starting because there is absolutely nothing that can be done to help you. You just have to brute force it. Studying more won't help you transfer YOUR idea to a storyboard, it just makes you better at drawing storyboards in general, and to my knowledge there ARE no books that show you what to do because the answer changes depending on specifically what you're trying to storyboard.
While I'm sure anons mean well when they tell you to study more, and maybe that's worked for them idk, but nothing will help you storyboard YOUR scenes specifically. This is why storyboards are always rough and loose. They're drawn very quickly so they can just throw it down on the pages and if they don't like the result they can just redo it without losing too much time.

>>6298210
All the mangaka on manben are working from their storyboards (referred to as "name" or ネーム in japanese), typically either a very light very loose pencil drawing or the same but on a separate, often smaller, piece of paper.
>how do you even do storyboards for a comic?
Get an idea for what happens on the page and then draw it. It's really that simple.

I might have to go out and buy some raw materials just to bang them together and see what sound they make.
