Left is simplistic but charming and has some interesting graphic shapes going on. Right is awkward almost-realism, where not enough time has been spent on the piece to make the illusion convincing when not viewed as a thumbnail, while also not enough effort was put into interesting application of paint, resulting in an amateurish look.

The house and grass have saturated colors.
Indeed, it was an attempt of illusion of reality, but the effect was nice in different way. The issue is that mountains and trees do not quite fit with the house, but it could be interpreted that the house is the nice, cozy place while all around it is harsh wilderness.

The moment I realized I couldn't draw from imagination, you can't draw from imagination without first having understood the fundamentals and only then will you be able to pursue a style by breaking the rules with creativity.

Middle school

I got a portrait drawing book and realized that mastering life drawing meant I could do anything and not be stuck drawing the same things over and over.

I even remember telling my friends that I didn't want to be stuck only drawing anime characters. I still did stylized things but my training was varied from that point on
