If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:

New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Read the sticky

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

after enjoying your stuff here for a while, i hope it's ok for me to post a small, admittedly lazy and quick paintover.
I looked up some art from the banner saga and here are a few things that stood out to me by comparison:

1. in the banner saga, clothing gets drawn almost in a geometrical manner. sleeves tend to be basically non-deformed cylinders, and your clothes seem to lack definition due to missing seams or "borders" of another color that are present in the game art. I changed the sleeves a bit to reflect that. I assume your robe is supposed to part in the middle, so i changed it a bit to a shape that looked more "correct" to me. sorry if its not.

2. lines indicative of folds tend to be used extremely sparingly, while you use them pretty liberally. many adjacent "fold lines" also give the impression of very thin fabric, something you might want to consider if it goes against your intentions.
i adjusted the clothes to have less lines, but someone better than me could probably do it even elegantly, i suppose...

3. made the hood a bit larger. his face is there, but i often feel like people forget there's an entire skull attached to that, so i hope my hood shape makes sense. i also changed the rather reddish/brown color scheme to correspond a bit more to the situation - pale green on the front, a bit of teal in the back to blend him more into the night...

while it's not perfect, i hope i could give a few helpful points! love the hands especially, and just what you're doing in general, keep on keeping on :)

I know I fucked this sketch up massively, the skeleton sketch looks flat, the body's perspective and proportions are inconsistent and the pose that I'm going for looks stiff and awkward.
I've only dipped my toes into both morpho's simplified shapes for the head and some analytical figure drawing videos in this mega.
https://mega.nz/folder/8qA2FLDQ#9ADn1WRz-YcH7H9M3i11dg
I just ended up mashing them together without properly understanding either, will probably correct that.

It's your first study, and you did a fine job for a first, so I'll just point to the right direction:
First, for enviroments, always draw the ground, it gives a base for the piece;
Second, focus on drawing(sketching) first, you are wasting time rendering a piece when it would be better for you to make 100 fast sketches of various scenes, then selecting the best ones to learn to render;
Third, go watch the Peter Han demo and pratice line confidence in the computer, it should be on the sticky in this post.
Good luck and keep drawing.

Alright then, I knew my fundies were still really bad and I haven't touched anatomy. Been a while since I've drawn and lost quite a lot of my gains, not to say I had a lot to begin with.
What books/ resources do you suggest that I go through? Before my break I already completed the first lesson of DAB (can draw half decent boxes but still have trouble with most of the basic stuff) and was 45 boxes into the 250 challenge. I remember grabbing a book called "Anatomy for Sculptors" but I'm gonna assume that's also above my skill level since I still can't understand or even observe or create 3d forms properly without it just mushing together.

the thing that draws my attention is that i can't see the continuation of the torso from beind the right arm at the bottom of the page; i understand the clothing and i don't know for sure if it's technically wrong but it looks aesthetically off at the very least, that's an important line
also this is a pet peeve of mine and even stock imagery fucks this up: cigarettes don't go that far up into the mouth, the filter would get soggy and render the cigarette unsmokeable: the upper lip is being draped over the cigarette by extending it over the filter to then "pull" it back securely as the lip tries to go back to resting position, creating a sort of overbite; usually if the ridgeline of the lower lip is visible, that's also where the rounded edge of the filter would be visible unless you're some decrepit, geriatric chinese peasant that no longer has working salivary glands
it's pretty otherwise, i like it

Besides the issues with proportion and anatomy, there's somewhat of a discrepancy between the rendering of the girl's skin and that of the rest of the picture. The glistening highlights on the former, coupled with the mostly diffuse shading, have been effective in giving it a silky appearance; but her hair, clothes and sword lack that same level of detail in texture, hence they end up looking a bit fake in comparison, like they were made of paper or cardboard. A simple way to differentiate the textures of materials is by using distinctive patterns while coloring them, those patters consisting of repeated arrangements of lines or geometrical shapes; for example, you could use crosshatching for fabric, and scales for leather (pic related). You can also use image filters, or public domain transparent patterns that are similar enough to the textures that you want to achieve.

Regarding the jagged outlines of the strands of hair, I understand that they were a stylistic choice (perhaps you were trying to give them the shapes of lightning-bolts, kinda like those seen in the hairstyles of some Yu-Gi-Oh! characters), but I think that the silhouettes that you depicted end up giving the hair a coarse and disheveled appearance, so I recommend that you give them more sinous contours.

Also, the diagonal stripes of shadows and highlights make her hair look flat, as if all the strands were attached to an invisible surface instead of blowing in the wind; therefore, I suggest that you give those stripes the shapes of crescents instead, that way they would also function as sort of partial frames or halos for the head of the girl.

when you look at how most digital professional artists work, they're forever using shortcuts and shit that you'd think are 'cheating' or missing out on skills but it's just utilising the available tools you have to get the job done efficiently

don't feel bad about that stuff, and don't think that every aspect of drawing has to be some challenge even when there are shortcuts available; if it helps you draw and the drawing comes out good, what's the problem?

How long should I focus on drawing if I'm still in the stage where I can't break down whatever I see into shapes by instinct?

I feel that I'm being too impatient whenever I'm practicing and I spend only around 1 minute or maybe 2 minutes at most trying to capture as many things about the shape as I can before moving on.

Pros find a photo or texture and use it in their drawings. However i would say your picture is "too clean". You are trying to depict waste land. Where are all the trash, dust, random particles scattered everywhere? How come everything is so clean and uniform? If you want to display disaster, your art must look like that. Also its too bright. Even inside the station its not 100% black. Slap in way darker tones where its appropriate. And way more dust and cracks and litter.

Quick tip for drawing those wrapping lines. I assume you're holding a pencil or stylus or something. It's a basic cylinder. Tilt your pen/stylus either toward you or away from you (or in whatever direction the reference is going) and look at the edge of the base or wherever there's some kind of ring around it. that will help remind you how to curve the line if your brain ever jams up and you can't remember how it should go.

how can i learn to line a ruler up properly? i'm trying to learn perspective, but everything keeps coming out crooked no matter how straight the edge is simply because it isn't at the right relative angle.

it might be because whenever i'm looking at a surface, my head automatically cocks at a 45 degree angle, and i have no idea why. should i force my head to stay completely straight when drawing?

it's weird, because whenever i read books, i automatically tilt it to a 45 degree angle to compensate and that works because the words are already on the page. however, drawing's an entirely separate beast as i can't seem to compensate for that angle with my lines, even when flipping the paper to that angle, i draw as if the paper was at 180 degrees rather than the 45 degrees it's at.

is this autism or is it possible to find some kind of exercise to cure me from this?

do you have any suggestions for understanding or drawing simple forms for the perspective addled? to put it into perspective how probably autistic i am, every time i try to study a simple form, like a cylinder or cube, i first see the thing as the thing and not the form.

for example, when if i were to use a box of kleenex as a subject of studying rectangles, i’d see it as a box of kleenex first. then i see it as the form and try to draw it but the perspective fucking gets me. i don’t know how this is even possible.

because i’m a tallfag, most of my work surfaces are waist-level for me. i look at the kleenex box from birds eye position, i start drawing but i quickly begin to feel an immense kind of discomfort when k actually try to draw or study it for some reason. it’s like someone slowly driving a cold awl through my eye in terms of discomfort and how it feels.

if i try to power through, my study/drawing ends up being 80% correct in terms of perspective, though there’s always that one line or angle thst makes it unseemly. i know you always fail when learning, but this particular way of not getting it right fills me with a primordial kind of horror. it’s the kind that flutters in your gut and then raises your hair before the pressure starts building in your skull and stomach.

should i just suck it up and keep trying or are there exercises to make the process more comfortable?

btw, a surface 8 pro with slim pen2 is probably the best thing you could draw on for the money imo. super versatile, jack of all trades. i just often suggest an ipad pro w/pencil2 because you can find em used for maybe less than $300 including pencil2. the paints i like are like $130~ per set for an ok one, and i can go through em in a month or 2.
but imo nothing beats the feeling of traditional paints, although it's a bit harder to handle than a fun ' infinite erase' canvas on a tablet, and never having to learn how to mix paints on digital.
>tl;dr

Granted this is a very raw sketch, but I had that weird "aha" moment a little while ago while redrawing this figure I skteched out earlier today (2). I'll try to put it into words, but I think it may have clicked for me a little, you aren't really supposed to draw the finished image as much as you are trying to "sclupt" it out of shapes, right? Like I couldn't get the damn shape right, so I just redrew spheres instead to get the shape I wanted. And while the anatomy is not quite right, it is at least better?

All of this is just drawing simple shapes and "chiseling" it into what you want by adding more and more detail? I get that some people don't need to do the whole shape step and can just bypass it if they have drawn a body 100, 1000, 10000 times or whatever. It is really weird, but I think I might kinda' get it?

Following this logic, if I really want to get better, I should really learn how to break down the human shape into simple stuff and then chisel at it till it looks right?

Holy fuck, after years of thinking "drawing from the shoulder" was a meme it finally clicked for me.
Your wrist doesn't move AT ALL when drawing from the shoulder. Without realizing it, I used to do this ghetto method where my shoulder would move a little, my elbow a medium amount, and my wrist a lot. I thought the shoulder movement was meant to complement the wrist but your wrist does NOT move! (Elbow is still kept loose tho)

I can suddenly draw near-perfect circles 3x the size what I used to be able to make, I'm not even kidding.

If you cannot draw face in a way its recognizable it means you are either lacking observation skills OR that you are trying to draw anime where all waifus look exactly the same. Like look up street fighter 5 cammy and juri. And then just draw their faces. If it isnt recognizable then you need to level up your observation skills.

Digital is a bit harder because the stylus never acts like pencil on paper so it can easily take you weeks before you get used to it. On other hand trad doesnt have UNDO and billion useful utilities AND you need camera or scanner before you can PYW. In terms of pure drawing its the same thing. Pick whatever you want. BTW not having UNDO is great boon for begs so you learn how to have line confidence early

Yeah,
one piece is some of the ugliest art combined with some of the most shamelessly formulaic and cliché storytelling ever shat out in Japanese media history. One need only glance at the state of the fanbase to get a sense of the mental deficiency needed to enjoy that insult to sequential art. I implore you to seek influences elsewhere, Akira toriyama is one of many excellent examples of the peaks of appeal in both writing style and artwork style. Unfortunately his influence has been so astronomically iconic, that the far reaching effects ( others mimicking him and his styles etc) have made him seem less than impressive to some lesser brained individuals.
If you like one piece that's cool too, just saying.
