Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbKqIJcIUCw

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

You need to observe and think. Have you asked yourself what is your goal with that beach background you posted for example?

Because nobody need a western mangaka. Story and composition challenges of good manga are much harder than you think, you wouldn't get away with style copied alone. And nobody need western anime illustrators also, with market oversaturated with more cheap and talented japanese students. The consumers also do not need non-japanese mangaka.
And you wouldn't be able to sell yourself even as NSFW artist, as western coomers are brainwashed to think "anime == pedo", and western hentai coomers has explicit rule in every single community that "only japanese, korean and chinese artists allowed".

Cute!
My only concern would be your pelvis/ribcage relationship seems to break down when you draw more complicated poses from imagination.
Pose number two (peace signs) looks like it's stretching the limits of believability, there's a 90 degree lateral tilt between her pelvis and ribcage and I just don't buy it. There's no way she can move her hips that much to the side. I think this may be a situation where overlapping the pelvis and ribcage more could help, I notice when I draw from imagination I always tend to draw the ribcage and pelvis further apart than they should be when perspective should cause big overlaps.
Pose number three (top down), her pelvis is lacking depth. We're looking at it from top down meaning a lot of the top plane should be visible, however yours is very thin making it look like she's got no ass.
The back pose you referenced is great and doesn't have that problem.

Everything that makes anime appealing is shorthand for actual things that happen in the anatomical body. (Except chins from bottom-up, somehow they still haven't figured out how to do that.)
Problems arise when beginners copy the shorthand, but don't understand the underlying intent behind it, which comes from construction.
Take eye, mouth, and nose placement, for example. It's a nightmare for any beginner, because you place those without rhyme or logic. But once you understand the forms of the face, and how the perspective warps them as they twist, tilt, and turn away from the viewer, placing those features becomes a breeze.

>> No.6290930

Not the only book you'll need, and definitely not the best starting point, but James Gurney's "color and light" will absolutely be essential if you aim to do full illustrations, because color *is* light and that book goes over the various lighting phenomena you'll encounter in the real world and need to reproduce in your paintings.
Besides that, you need to learn how to shade (which will require understanding construction), and learn how to understand local color (which I think James Gurney might get into), and that should cover most elements of coloring.
Of course, that won't help you come up with pleasing color palettes, that's where color theory and film/master studies come in.
Good luck anon, there's a ton of shit you need to learn to render like a professional but it's all things you can master individually relatively quickly. And I hope someone recommends you a good book.

Anon you have no personality and no thinking of your own, everything you spout can be reduced to "hey I'm old and used to kinda do that back then but I don't anymore, so it's weird that you do it uh?". It seems completely alien to you that people are invested into certain hobbies and passions at an intricate level, or even are learning or have learned Japanese on their own, because your consciousness level is always attuned to what is objectively going on in the world, thus deefening any semblance of subjective experience you could possibly muster.
The thing is somewhere within yourself you are very much aware of this, because in your very first post you were reflexively arguing before anyone had said anything: "b-but I'm not an uber-whatever", "I-I'm old now", or changing the spelling of such a simple word like "anime" just to try and dissociate yourself from our own internal contradiction.
Now you want to learn how to draw because deep down you've realized this, that after having spent decades parroting the world around you, you're left with no creativity and nothing unique of your own.

So take a second to assess this paradox within yourself and drop that pathetic misplaced pride because you're nothing but embarrassing to look at.

I finished watching Krenz, everything he says is sorta aligned with what I already know, mostly I need to work on my memory of shapes to develop shortcuts, I guess.

But can someone elaborate on what he called "sailboat theory"?
I assume it has to do with composition, establishing the ground, the vertical center of focus and some kind of leading curve, but I can't find much by googling it.

Also, he mentions this is part 1/3, did he ever release parts 2 and 3, or are there any recommended tutorials that are equally condensed?
I have been drawing for a loooooong time, I just suck at the fundamentals, so a 3h summary of all these topics was great for me to diagnose what's wrong with my art.

It's the head shape mainly it's too rigid and straight you need more curves.

Considering that Russian text it basically means you can detect/identify shapes in composition by subtracting, combining or modifying basic shapes. For example crescent moon is constructed by subtracting ellipse (modified circle) from another circle.

i know this is not specific to anime but my biggest crux is that i'm slow, so even results i may like i'm still frustrated. pic related took 30-40 minutes total but i feel that someone competent could have sped it up to ten minutes.

how can this be changed? i feel like this peculiar problem is particular to me only and that it comes naturally for other people.

You will be slow for years bro. Don't be afraid of spending hours on a single drawing. You won't get faster if you try to race through your drawings.
Pros are fast because they draw more (measured in time) in one day than you in a whole month.

Overall good job. I think it's a good step in the right direction. But your proportions are suffering too frequently.

Be sure to use angles and true verticals and horizontals to check whether points along an image line up. For instance, the tip of the nose is too low in relation to Misty's right lower eyelid. The placement of the ear is correct in it's vertical placement. Her cheek also needs to be lowered.

I actually tried to sketch Hanae from Blue Archive, it got messier way later when trying to adjust stuff.
There are a lot of mistakes I can work through, like the hair in this instance but i'm doing my best.

Well I'm just also a /beg/ so I'm not exactly qualified to give you advice, but I think you should observe the design more, Question why the original artist put this line here, and why this line curved like this, why the proportion of x like that. You can fill the gap of not understanding the design with knowledge like anatomy or references and such, I also used to take a very long time to sketch something, like 3 hours(pic on the right) for a very barebone one. Now I just do it in a few minutes. If you draw faster you will draw more.

>> No.6299239

>>6299172
I should really follow this advice but i'm finding it really hard because every artist draws in a different way and i feel overwhelmed so i'm trying to find the most generic way to draw something as of right now. I'll do my best tho, anon
