Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbKqIJcIUCw

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Just don't draw that. Pick a lane and stick with it. Analyze the logic behind art you find appealing and which details are included or omitted, and use that to inform your decisions. When experimenting with stylization and finding the balance you want you might end up drawing weird-looking stuff, and whatever ideal you reach that appeals the most to you still won't be universally appealing, but that's the case with all art.
Or draw the cartoony face with a detailed body if you want, using that same method. I don't personally find that stuff appealing, but a lot of people evidently do since it's so common and some even dress up as them.

nta but you should check out the Krenz method of copying if you can't see the difference between the ref and your pic. There's no neck, and your head proportions are off (The height from the top of her eyes to her chin, the top of her head to the top of her eyes, and her cat ears, are approx the same.). Check other proportions too.

>> No.6269607

Question: Wouldn't it be better to copy without drawing on top of the original? Like just doubling the image in one dimension, drawing from sight and then pulling the layer on top of the original to check for accuracy. I feel like that would be a faster way to improve it but I'm unsure about the shapes - when I draw on top of the original the shapes are very clear as well as how they are related to the original. But when I try to draw without any overlay I still do try to use them, it's just hard to since often times the shapes I'd like to use have landmarks that don't clearly correspond to the original.

Something I've been interested with these past few weeks is the way mangaka draw the ocular/Brow bone.
Araki draws the inner corner of the eye bone normally and then the top and corner of the brow bone, He doesn't draw an eye lid but does sometimes draw the cheek bones.
Itagaki draws the eye brows connecting to the eye lid making the shape of the corner of the brow bone. He sometimes draws the cheek bone but not always.
Inoue draws the corner of the eye bone and an eye lid but not the bottom of the brow bone and sometimes the cheek bone.
Toriyama is the fucking weirdest because hes autistic about the brow bone on alot of people and forms where it covers the complete top of their eye so no eyes lid. He even goes further showing the indents of the brow bone and where they connect to the forehead. He draws the cheek bones very defined too and it looks uncanny most of the time IMO.

Nice, what was your experience studying the same artist for half a year, what did you learn etc?

>> No.6270187

>>6270110

I'd say I learned how he draws faces pretty well, and especially eyes. Afterwards I tried to reduce his influence in my drawings because I felt like his style was too shounen-ish when I wanted to draw more erotically (which is purely because I'm bad at drawing, Kotoyama is very talented at drawing erotic poses and scenes but is more subtle about it than just drawing big tits and ass). I think I also got better at drawing hands and legs, I like how he draws forearms and calfs.

Maybe the biggest thing I learned was the importance of body language. Kotoyama is really good at it and his works are great reference material for it. Earlier I mentioned how Kotoyama is good at erotic things, and I think it's purely because he seems to effortlessly design cool characters and is good at using body language to showcase their personalities. He's also good at drawing clothing folds, and has a good fashion sense, so his works are good reference material for those two things as well.

Next Yofukashi releases 15th day, going to buy and read it, and afterwards try to copy favorite parts to see closely I manage to imitate him.

The eyes are kinda wack. The head isn't angled enough for the pupil of the other eye (character's left eye in 1st pic, right eye in 2nd pic) to be hidden like that. Something about 1st pic's torso/hip area feels odd but Idk what exactly. In the 2nd pic, the flap of fabric under the left hand looks off, almost like the tail is coming out sideways from the waist. That said, nice funky designs, I like the look of them.

Had to overlay my copy with the original and re-draw/use the transform tool every few seconds and its still not very accurate.

Am I supposed to be thinking about or actually trying to learn something while doing this? All I'm thinking is "whoops I placed that line wrong, better move it a bit to the left, whoops thats too far left" and "whoops I got that angle wrong, better increase the tilt, oops that still wasn't far enough"
Or is this just the kind of thing I'm supposed to grind for 5000 hours until I subconsciously become a copygod?

Sighting angles and measuring is a bit of a different mode from volumetric drawing, where you focus more on the 2D distances between elements and shapes while ignoring the forms. Ideally you'd be integrating both later on, which can feel awkward to get used to.
Krenz stresses that 2D accuracy training because it's easier for a beginner to wrap their head around without the added complications, like trying to construct it without making an envelope and getting the proportions first. The accuracy training *is* different from how you'd normally draw, since it's just meant to develop your eye and help you see those relationships and proportions so you can more easily notice those things and integrate them into your drawings.
Vilppu has internalized that process and eyeballs it automatically. He may not be very concerned with getting an identical copy of the model, but knowing accuracy lets him spot and avoid unintentional deviations from the model (rather than intentional ones) in a way beginners usually can't.
The main thing this training accomplishes is speeding up that thing where you look at an old drawing and find a bajillion mistakes you can't believe you'd think looked fine. Even if all other faculties stay untrained, you can at least tell what proportions are right and place your marks where you actually want them to go, without noodling around fixing minute details in a vague sketch like beginners often do.

Lately i've been having troubles making faces in sketches that have the right form and I feel kinda lost, Loomis feels kinda weird to use for anime heads.
I usually start with a circle, a line to indicate the orientation of the head and then the other lines.
Any suggestions?

Faces are hard. There's a reason only a few mangaka can make extremely cute anime faces despite how simple it looks, and most resort to samefacing everything because they know only one or two that work. My advice is to copy anime faces you think are cute, then analyze the difference between them and your go to method or other artists'

I think you should study faces and what makes them appealing. I tried doing a little drawing over your sketch and the face shape is really good, you just need to nail down the expression. More details for the eyes, make the face less wide, give a focus to where she's looking at, give her a clear expression be it of embarassament or anything and adds details that convey that.

I'm not the ass. But I kinda agree with the other anon to some extent. There are some proportion flaws more so from a lack of proper construction and then moving into sketch phase too quickly. It would be beneficial to observe and study other anime series too besides mobile games fate go. I'm posting an image of serial experiments lain to fully show what a correct proportional image looks like. Compared to yours. I would help redline too for practice but I'd like to get a more comfortable drawing arrangements. Plus I'm busy too. I hope this helps. The more that you study anatomy the more you'll be able to see the errors by yourself by taking a step back from the monitor. my character loses proportions when I add clothes, I know the solution probably is "just draw more", and I will, but maybe there are a few tricks or books recommended on the subject.
it sucks because after learning basic construction, gesture, and anatomy, I can finally draw human characters in different positions, from different angles, but when I try to add clothes (especially baggy clothes) everything just goes to hell.
and cool fashion is kinda what I like the most about anime...
