I personally wouldn't have drawn her calf muscle quite that pronounced if I were op, but there's nothing wrong with how he did it since that is what massive pronounced calf muscles look like.

Try learning aesthetic poses. Pic related is the examples. Which real human pose look more aesthetically pleasing to you? I'd say, the left one. The right pose kinda looks like she hurt her back.

TLDR: Use a better reference and learn more about aesthetically pleasing poses.

I also agree with what you're saying. Everyone should be learning from realism and fundies at the beginning. When they have a better understanding of those basics then they should create something that they want with that knowledge.
