6216016 No.6216016 [Reply] [Original]

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
Completed: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Vilppu Drawing Manual (and literally any other book made by Glenn Vilppu)
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR INTERMEDIATES:
- How to Draw by Scott Robertson
- How to Render by Scott Robertson
- Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter by James Gurney
- Morpho: Anatomy for Artists (and Literally any other book made by Michel Lauricella)
- Anatomy for Sculptors

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

No, people "freaking out" over it are marketing it, whether because they are paid to or because they've seen others doing the same and got swept up in the meme. It's the same thing that happened with Discord, their marketing was literally paying people to spam advertising posts talking about how much better it was than Skype and company all over 4chan, Facebook and Reddit.
>ai is not going to replace artists anytime too soon.
AI is never going to replace artists the same way more artists don't replace artists, and it's probably not going to replace truckers for centuries either because of security concerns.

>christ, how am i supposed to go from shitty anime sketches to something of this caliber in my lifetime
Dedicate your entire life to the craft, and study under similar masters who will push you to the breaking point to improve.

Finding such a teacher is nearly impossible these days. Your best alternative, unironically, is to study art history closely. Find pieces that blow you away and truly, really, seriously try to emulate them. Not copy them, but push yourself to create similar levels of fidelity. You'll fail over and over, but with each failure, go back to your piece and close analyse the techniques you used to assemble it, and ask yourself "What new techniques might I need to develop to get that one next step closer to my goals?" Imagine those techniques, practice them til they are mastered.

Without studying art history, and I mean very closely studying the color, composition and aesthetics of great paintings you end up falling in love with, you will miss out on so much of your potential. Your personal sense for aesthetics will develop more slowly. Falling in love with beautiful art is like a yoke that pulls your skills forward.

idk but
I think how the light will reflect from the source desu.
If the plane is perpendicular to the light it will be brightest, if it receives none than it will be darkest.
I assume(?) the green parts would be darker than the top parts, but also lighter than the shadow because it gets affected by reflected light and such

Pull up a picture of a naked human body on google, measure the limbs and the major body parts, use one body part to measure other body parts, repeat this step , these measurements usually stay the same.

You should be using reference if you are a newbie, draw something with reference and then try drawing it without reference a second time.

>>6219281
It all comes down to the style you're going for, look for an artist you like and copy their pen style, think about why they placed those lines there, what were they trying to do/ communicate. but for the most part minimalism is better than too much details. For edges you can just turn your pencil on its side for soft edges, but you should think about what is the purpose of soft edges, the more questions you ask yourself the more answers you'll get.

>>6219106
Yeah its pretty cute, work on adding more form to the faces with soft shadows/ colors

Thanks anon, but I have been drawing with reference for awhile.
Hogarth Dynamic Figure Drawing emphasizes drawing WITHOUT a reference. It teaches you to draw a figure from any pose or angle without the need for an imagination or reference picture. In other words, it's perfect for me.
I picked up this book because it was very easy to read, but it doesn't cover proportions. I kind of base my proportions off how it looks for now, and did some research and apparently legs are 1.2x the length of arms but it's still not clicking because of the shoulder, hands, kneecaps, etc.
I think I will start with simple stand up poses first then work my way down.

>> No.6219364

>>6219281
Before you add in all the details First jut think in shades, a lot of thin lines blur together a darker shade anyways and that is how it will eventually read.. Make hard edges with firmer line and softer edges with either thinner lines or just erase parts of the lines. The details can come later.

When first starting off, is it better to do fast, shitty drawings, or take your time and try to make them look nice? I did my first upside down stravinsky recently, and it took me 3 days. I probably spent something like 6 to 8 hours on it in total. I feel like I learned from it, but mostly what I learned was how important it is to use lines to block out basic forms near the start, so that things don't wind up totally out of proportion later on, or fail to join together in the middle when copying something. I'm not talking about projecting 3D shapes onto the paper with perspective, just throwing down some basic 2D shapes and lines to keep the length and angle of the lines I'm copying in check. And at my current level, all I'm doing is copying stuff, whether it be photos, objects irl, or drawings.

I've heard several people say that the best way to improve is to do fast, freehand sketches that take ~15-30 minutes. To not bother with construction lines, and just start putting the actual lines you want to draw down on the paper. And also that you should be aiming to do several drawings each day, rather than potentially spending multiple days on a single drawing.

I am wondering, is this advice relevant to total beginners? The people I've heard say this are all much better at art than I am, and I am unsure if their advice is aimed at somebody who's been drawing for about a week. I really struggle to draw something quickly without making a complete mockery of it.

tl;dr - As pre-/beg/ aiming to improve, should I do many fast sketches each day, or take my time and try to make each sketch look decent?

It kinda is, but it teaches you how to practice good values and use value maps for accurate life studies, which are important skills. That's why people tell you to skip all the pseudoscientific fluff and just do the exercises. The Stravinsky exercise is a classic in American art classes, but that's because the curricula are based on the book. IMO it's a non-productive exercise and a poor start for the book even though it's also been in the /ic/ sticky for a very long time.
