Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbKqIJcIUCw

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Begging for any good answers. How do they make lineart such as this? Clearly it’s digital, but do you have any idea of what brush, or techniques they might be using? It’s so uniform, but everything is so impossibly crisp and smooth to capture with hand without undoing a bajillion times. I’ve tried every ink brush in procreate to no avail.

Or is it some super hyper top-secret nippon anime CIA brush passed down since the dawn of time?

>> No.6214767

And I know we’re all tired of the “hurr how do lineart” questions, but I’ve made some genuine attempts at replicating that and can’t quite get it. My best guess is it’s a combination of technique and line arcing, but I’m not sure.

When it comes to drawing primarily from imagination, can you see what you're trying to draw before you put any lines down? Say if you're drawing a face, do you see the entire face at once or do you split it up and try to visualize an eye first, then other eye, then nose, etc.? I'd just like to know what different people's mental process is.

Do you perhaps see it in your mind as you're making lines, intuitively? Is it a whole or in parts?

Only hard items on your 3/4 ref is lips and nose. But very few anime lovers like lips and noses so whatever. Also there is some left eye trouble. It's shifted up and rotated to 30 deg CCW.

seeing by your drawing, you should stop focusing on making entire pieces and coloring them and should instead focus more on only getting the proportions right, ALSO focusing on the construcion of the head, start copying and deconstructing other artists works, it works wonders

I've been grinding for 5 hours a day almost everyday since the start of the year. I still don't have a good way to construct the body I can't visualise what it is supposed to look like on screen even with a reference on hand. Starting a drawing is the worst, I can generally get into the process after the lines are set but getting the lines on paper is the worst part. This are just suggestions but I've to say that you should start out with a more simpler style and work your way up from there. The most important component of most anime/manga style characters are the eyes and yours works, except for the size and the placement of it.
By eye size, anime eyes have to be proportional to both the over all head and hair of said character. That's why all of us can tell if an anime character is an Uguuu or (in your case) is a tad too small, specially compared to the size of the hair.
Another suggestion I can give is for you to simplify the nose. Its a bit jarring to see large 80's hair combined with 00's nose and 90's eyes, hence the somewhat obtuse over all look of the piece.

Uncolored pictures can easily get thousand of likes if you're good. Even if it's a simple sketch and not something elaborate. And if being popular is what worries you, you should quit art. Also those hands are just hastily drawn, which is pretty typical from an animator. You can't tell the skill from that alone

I get what you mean (I'm on a somewhat similar boat) but I think it's not so black and white. You can still achieve an appealing result that will be liked by many even if you have a sketchy artstyle and don't want to render 15h long pieces (pic related). In fact being an artist like this may get you more attention if done well, and you'll be more approachable as an artist as opposed to being another asian artist who cannot be differenciated from the typical stuff you find in the Pixiv ranking.

So I think the real question you should be asking is "how can I elevate my sketches to make them interesting but while still not compromising too much on my natural inclinations?".

The AI in question >>6229136 here does not originally come up with anything. What it does is a mashup of certain key parts from different artworks it mashups together. The AI is trained to recognize these parts in existing artworks, cut them up and then merge them together to create something different. The gaps (like "crying girl" etc) are then filled up. On the 2nd row you can see the weird tears for example.
Still on the 2nd row, look at the 2nd and 4th pictures, these are good examples because you can recognize two different human process/style: 2nd has a more evident lineart showing with basic flat shadows whereas 4th looks like it's painted with a wet brush or something. The point I'm making is that these respective styles come from the artists who are behind the parts the AI used as a base.

You can make the same kind of observations for the other drawings. People need to understand that there is no singular way to make something into art, because art is a flat representation of what reality is like for a given artist. This is why no artist draws trees the same way either, and this is why art is so interesting, because it's like seeing the interpretation of reality through someone else's eyes.
So take the wings for example: if no artist had ever attempted drawing angel wings before, then the AI couldn't know how to do it either, because it is a *human, 2D representation* of the real life 3D idea of of what we believe angel wings are like. On the last row it is fairly obvious the wing poses and way they are rendered are ripped off existing artworks.

Anyone who's been browsing and saving artworks for the past decade or more can see what I'm talking about. If you're dedicated enough you could deconstruct the way the AI works from the other way around and figure out what artworks they're using and hence what artists they're fucking over.
The truth needs to be out there, and eventually it will.

Tracing helps you understand how stylization works and might help you internalize anatomy, as long as you don't just trace mindlessly. Obviously, you'll also learn about line strength.
The difference between tracing and reference studies is that reference studies also teach you maintaining proportions and how to observe line flows. You can also argue that, because reference studies necessarily require more focus, you're less likely to fall into a state of mindlessly copying something.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
While tracing is easier and seems kinda like cheating, if you pay attention while tracing, you'll be able to learn the fewer things it teaches at a heightened pace than if you were to reference study something, the latter teaching you more skills but all of them at a slower pace.
