You only really need 3 of them at most
Blending modes are cringe
Vector layers and perspective grid layers are extremely powerful but you should learn to freehand gothic cathedrals anyway

Unless you're animating in which case just do whatever it takes

I actually have a layer setup of sorts with my trad tools
>Sketch on office paper (possibly a foreground and background)
>Ink over a lightboard with tracing paper (or office paper honestly)
>Scan the linework, combine FG and BG if necessary, and:
>A. print it, colour it with copics or watercolour (mind your paper)
>B. colour digitally (I seldom do this)

Clipping mask, lock transparency, layer masks. These things will save you a lot of headaches.

Also, vector layers are a meme. You're just slowing your tempo down for no good reason.

People are talking in here like you can really tell the difference in their work if they use multiple layers or not.

most of the people that post here aren't even good enough to explain that there's always a situation for something in art. so even if they feel like layers makes it artificial, they aren't even talking about the parts of art where that's useful.

I guarantee you most of the people who say 1 layer makes your art more painterly don't actually understand how to use layers correctly.

also to the person who thinks you have to be able to color inside the lines on digital... tell that to all the industry professionals who use layer/clipping masks to go fast for their deadline.

More like- they dont understand the limitations and time consumption of process to work on 1 layer in digital.

Also imagine shooting yourself in the leg and not using advanced techniques.

This. Layer clipping is such a huge timesaver, your only excuse for not using it would be not knowing this feature exists

here's a pretty fun technique I use with layers.

I shade the drawing normally, and then for hue shifting, I'll add gradients with clipping masks on new layers above my colors.
after that I'll double click on the layer to open up the layer style menu, and play around with the blend if settings.

sketch/value blocking
line work/rendering
detailing/refining

not strictly following the next step from top to bottom. use what you need for the degree of finish you want.

I’m also having difficulties sorting workspace for digital painting. CSP is too congested (for computer tablets) and Procreate is missing functions (inverting selection layer, adjust filling when using bucket tool to go within or beyond the line, etc)
Switching back and forth with art apps is kind of a pain. I end up mostly working with Procreate layers because IG doesn’t care anyway

Once your finished drawing make a new file the same size as the original, then cut and paste all of the layers to the new file. You would be surprised at how much smaller the new file can get in a lot of cases. This is helpful
when you don't have too much space on your hard drive to spare.
