So, my boyfriend really likes kemono bara styles. I'm an artfag, but on the traditional side of things. I don't really know my way around cartooning or cartoon illustration.
Is picrel a good first attempt? Am I capturing the style well? Suggestions for improvement?

Also, cartoon hands are a fucking nightmare when you've learned to draw hands traditionally first.

>>6195128
If you want to learn bara just look up pics of pro wrestlers and study their builds

A lot of the groundwork for stylistic drawing is the same as realistic drawing. Block in shapes, use construction etc. Once you realize anime is just a style instead of it's own specialized discipline it becomes a lot more approachable. And that being said, you can absolutely make realistic looking bara characters that are still appealing.

Hooves are definitely wonky because I kinda half-assed them from a reference, I thought that I could get away with that but I was wrong lmao

The thing is if the reference image wasn't there and if I wasn't told it's Carolyn I'd have trouble recognizing it as that specific character or as just a pink anthro cat.

I think the big detail that clicks in my head as "That's Princess Carolyn" is the eyes, face, and hair style along with other things from the show like the setting and her clothes. Otherwise I'm not fully certain and think it could be that one cat from VGcats or something. You could draw that yellow triangular pendant she always has on to help.

She looks nice tho, whoever she's recognized as. Was one of my favorite characters when I watched the show, her and Vincent Adultman was my favorite gag.

This is pretty good! I like her hips a lot, you got all the right curves. I can't help but feel as though her chest is a bit too...small? Maybe someone with better anatomy knowledge can weigh in. I don't mean her breasts, obviously, but her actual torso. Or maybe her breasts simply aren't hanging enough. I dunno. Something's a tad off.

the Vilppu Drawing Manual has a really short but sweet section on overlap (along with other methods of creating depth) with plenty of examples.
as far as more academic/measuring foreshortening, i think this David Finch video covers it well. i'm not aware of any books that go into detail though.

It's pretty good anatomically speaking. I would just recommend being a little more deliberate with texture, detailing, and where they happen. Overall it's pretty busy since you drew fur everywhere, and it might look better with it and the body definition only happening around where you want the viewer to look. Like the face and the ass.

>>6203294
The front is good. The back is the only part that looks strange to me. With the angle of his head, I'm not sure you'd see that much of that side or its volume. Also maybe in the center of the mass, leave it blank. Our eyes will fill in the detail, and it won't take away from the face so much.

great job learning anatomy. you're doing really well doing as much as you can each time. I like that you're also doing slightly different angles than just front on. Everything is pretty much the right size, you just gotta learn the details.

for the pelvis I drew you can notice that the stomach ends in the middle, and the belly button sits right on top of the top line.

once you're done with the abdomen area, I'd recommend learning about the collar bone/neck area, and/or breasts. whichever is more fun at the time

Not bad, I just wish the line art was more confident. Nothing is really well defined or placed, it feels like you threw together his structure and moved on to coloring. If we remove the color, what's left underneath is a rough sketch. You've certainly got potential, just be more confident with the line art next time.

the hips were intentional, but I can see what you mean. I normally draw women so that's why I drew it how I did. I'll make the legs come out from the pelvis less next time though on a male

the stuff about the lines is cool. I'm not really sure I know of a way to refine them without it taking too long? my problem, and the reason it's just a colored in rough sketch, is that line art is slow and boring for me. any suggestions, or methods you use to keep it interesting for yourself?

While you should definitely work on those skills, I have to sometimes remind myself that some of my favorite pics are just sketches. Some of my favorite artists only draw sketches, like Guoh. He does some good rendered stuff sometimes, but even then it's mostly just flats.

Like, look at this. Ajin drew this. It's black and white, just really clean, crisp lines, and cute shapes. That's all you need. Don't get bogged down by all the shiny lights and colors, you can learn those eventually, but you don't NEED them to get the ball rolling.

It's an interesting prompt, something that wasn't just "draw x animal", and this prompt was something that no one here has probably never done before. Even I was considering doing it, but then I remembered how bad I am and that it would only look pathetic if I did it.

These are excellent anon, for a beginning. You have some good sense for proportions and volume, although it does look a little stiff.

Furry art is mostly learning proper human anatomy and mixing it with animal features. In my opinion drawing animal faces, hands and other added stuff is somewhat easy, in the sense that you can get some passable stuff more easily than if one tried human features. That's why I'd recommend focusing more on the human anatomy part, such as gesture, volume, musculature, volume, etc.

If you focus more on guys or bara, I'd say anatomy is doubly important, because knowing the proper shapes and volume of muscles will make your art vastly more appealing. To learn this it is important to make a lot, like a lot of study using photo references of real life guys, with some art of your favorite artists in between for inspiration.

Start with gesture drawings, add some simple shapes and volume until it has a similar idea, or feeling, of the reference. It doesn't have to be exact, or with sharply defined lines (avoid chicken scratching). Maybe after each practice session select a drawing that you like the most and add more details, flesh it out more, etc.

There are many learning resources out there. These are some I used myself, which may be helpful to you:

This one is an excellent beginner course on figure drawing that covers most of the basics:
https://www.lovelifedrawing.com/first-steps-mini-course/

This is a tool for timed practice sessions on figure and gesture drawing:
https://line-of-action.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/#

This one is an interesting one. It actually was made by a furry artist that does mostly gay stuff with somewhat realistic anatomy. It's for drawing animal heads and faces, from any angle you want:
https://x6ud.github.io/#/

I hope this is helpful. Remember to practice consistently, if only 15 minutes every day, and most importantly have fun!

First time using digital. And it was on a wacom art... the tiny pad. Spent over an hour getting used to drawing on it, and then the whole brush thing was just beyond me, so I winged it.

Had to finish it digitally because the sepia pencil marks were WAY too dark and would have shown through her white fur. I may buy a light board from Amazon to trace it on to a clean sheet of nicer paper and color it with color pencil.

Study skulls. You don't even have to worry about muscles or skin. Just skulls. Static skulls.

>> No.6213399

>>6213321
It is excellent practice yes, but in my opinion I'd advise against doing it digitally on a drawing tablet. This because doing it digital carries the temptation to undo with Ctrl-Z, and if it's a tablet without screen, both factors make it difficult to assess your work each session, wich hampers your progress.

I have a drawing tablet too, but I still prefer traditional. I suggest you just get a lot of scrap paper, like from an office, and practice with that. You could still use your tablet, but mostly to add color and final touches to drawings that you really like, to build some portfolio or gallery for example which follows your progress.
