Today's /beg/ challenge: Draw a Butternut Squash.

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

Sticky:

New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q

Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

SNAKE OIL (avoid at all costs):
- Fun With A Pencil

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Repostan just for posterity:
I got a tablet recently and I'm having a lot of fun just doodling around - but I'm fucking lost on how to improve/what to do.
I know I should be drawing simple shapes to start with but what next? Where do I start? What exercises should I do? Do I just copy from references until it clicks?
Studying a broad subject like art by myself is making my brain melt. Doesn't help I have no prior experience in art at all.
-
I was recommended figure studies last thread but I'd love to get some more suggestions

Just do Vilppu. You don't need fun with a pencil. Also just study head anatomy and start drawing heads from reference. Look at different heads from every angle and copy it's structure. Look at how different styles interpret the most difficult parts of the head and steal from that style that you want to do.

You get better by doing, if you have any weaknesses go out and try to draw it, you will never improve if you keep saying "I can't do X". You CAN do it, you HAVE to do it, you will just be bad at first.

i have literally no idea because ive never done bargue studies. But you should probably be doing these traditionally with charcoal. Secondly it looks like you got everything pretty accurately, but im not sure how well you will do without that cross giving you training wheels.

>>6191099
It looks like you are just learning sight measuring. But as far as how "Blocky" you should be going, there is an actual literal purpose behind the left example vs the right curved example.

Basically, the left example is drawing the angles actually present in the curved example. Brent Eviston teaches this when teaching studients how to accurately copy curved lines instead of free hand guessing.

This is a measuring technique, notice how if you can actually draw the curved line accurately inside the left angled drawing. When you draw "blocky" it shouldn't be randomly and because of looks, its literally just a means to achieve accurate curved lines without freehanding.

anyways yeah the best exercise would to not blindly copy the left, but use the techniques the left is showing you and then copy the right as accurately as possible. Find all the straight lines inside those curves and then draw the curve accurately.

Anyways, im not sure how good Bargue Plates are actually worth doing without knowing all this stuff im already telling you about right now. Typically I think bargue plates are used in Ateliers and private lessons so an instructor can actually teach you the fundamentals BEHIND the bargue plates.

Basically it seems like you are just trying to copy things that sound and look fancy except not having the knowledge to deconstruct what you are actually doing so you learn from it. Don't get me wrong you are improving by just copying but you need some guidance first rather than blindly jumping into it.

You're aren't dumb if you realize literally everything boils down to fundamentals and you get yourself acquainted with what those fundamentals are. The sticky isn't the best resource in the world, there are definitely much better resources than what the sticky provides, but if you care enough you know how to find what you need.

You are dumb if you just hoard resources and tutorials and never actually draw. Getting better at drawing is 90 percent drawing things that are difficult to you and 10 percent learning how to make them less difficult.

i appreciate the feedback anon, thank you.
>use the techniques the left is showing you and then copy the right as accurately as possible. Find all the straight lines inside those curves and then draw the curve accurately.
i'll do exactly this. i was confused by the need for blocky lines since the curvy lines are comparably easy to make, but i understand that they're just used as a tool for deconstruction now.

>> No.6191137

>>6191133
Don't forget, everything thats being done in the left example is supposed to be done with extremely light lines. This is why I said you probably shouldn't be doing this on digital. The final product is when you draw those final curved lines darkly. Basically all those measuring techniques and lines are just scaffolding.

There’s no construction method that will work for 100% of the anime faces you see in the wild. They’re all slightly different with different proportions, they bend and exaggerate things in different ways that aren’t always technically “correct”, etc. Just use construction/proportions to get close enough to what you want and let your intuition carry you the rest of the way.

It takes time. I recommend a combination of a) faces directly copied from reference, then overlay your drawing onto the reference to see how close you were, b) drawing faces you’ve seen before from memory, then again overlaying your drawing onto the original to check for accuracy, and c) drawing your own from imagination (harder to check for accuracy obviously, but still analyze your drawings after you finish them and try to figure out what you can improve on).

given drawing is construction, look at learning the same way: find a specific thing you want to start drawing, and focus on it, then once you understand it and have done some studies, you can move on to the next

that means if you want to draw heads, learn to draw heads, then learn to draw torsos, then the rest; one step at a time

smartphones are the main problem since it creates a massive audience of people that consume but can't contribute much; so fewer things get created by those who are increasingly dependent on smartphones for everything they do now (seen in frequent laptop sales decreasing)

then in this rapid age we're all hungry for fast information and instant validation so we flock to the biggest services that can provide that, making already niche platforms less appealing, and inevitably their main demographic ages and moves on without a replacement

i genuinely think VR will be the thing that fixes that, as we yet again move into a space where anyone can create and host worlds of their own, hosted by regular people (of course still with the huge boring stuff by megacorps); but given those vr worlds will offer pretty much whatever people have the creativity to create, they'll remain appealing

>>6192341
To copy means you put reference somewhere you can see it (print it out, second monitor, tile the picture side by side in your drawing app) and simply draw what you are seeing. Keys to drawing is basically book just about learning how to copy real life (works on copying other pictures as well)

what I'm thinking when copying the plates is stuff like:

Doesn't teach any of the important beginner fundamentals, the first exercise is literally a case of "draw the rest of the fucking owl". Beginners shouldn't be anywhere near drawing heads until they know how to draw basic shapes and volumes first.

The usual cope is something like
>"but you don't understand! fun with a pencil isn't meant to be fundamentals! it's just meant to be a fun book that gets you drawing! it's for kids!"
Which just further proves the point; it's a bad book for learning, especially the fundamentals, and you're unlikely to improve much.

Loomis for beginners in general is a meme. The guy even says you should learn perspective before reading his books.

How does it compare to the sketch on the right? Which is more appealing and why?

flip your image the opposite way and look at it, then zoom all the way out and look at it, not sure if trolling but there are definitely some anatomical errors in your drawing. The neck for one looks like a noodle and is missing the muscles that a human being would have (if that is your intention) and the mouth isn't facing hte same direction as the face, try turning it slightly and obscuring the visible left part of her mouth with where the tongue is, also more of the face is showing than would be showing with her head positioned this way
The image on the right is gal gadot I think, and it looks pretty close to realistic and the perspective is alright but the neck and collar bone looks off

also I meant to say that if you like it that's great that you're happy with what you've produced and this is important for you to keep going, doesn't matter if other people like it, but if you want other people to like it try to practice by copying art that is already successful in between drawing your own stuff, and it'll help tune your visual preferences to that of the popular world

I just realized looking at the drawings in this thread is like looking at the drawings I made when I was twelve years old.
