Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbKqIJcIUCw

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Try to learn how to sketch if you don't dislike sketches. Use loose lines, say 5px pressured-opacity fixed-size brush, don't undo and erase often, put second line over first if you want make it thicker. Look at the pic. There is a firs very loose blue sketch, second sketch over it and thin final line after all (and maybe stabilized). Watch "sketching" videos in YT and Vilppu's course. Watch 奏音's works. Good sketch even can be colored. And don't try to make an ideal line at first try. Houtengeki can do this (after 5 undos) because he is pro. You don't need it. As a last chance there is a liqufy tool.

I feel like with enough accumulation of knowledge and techniques and with enough practice there comes a point where you have the overall creative process internalized and this leads to exponentially faster improvement as you keep progressing because you can instantly tell what skills needs improvement or what knowledge is lacking when tackling a new piece and how to go about finding a solution. I'd describe this like solving a jigsaw puzzle, shit is disorienting at the start but when you have enough of the picture connected together it gets easier to find missing pieces. My future progress will tell me if this hunch is correct!

I really like pictures from early 00s - pre 10s, often especially the coloring. Besides referencing, what should I do and know in order to replicate that art style? I hope my question wasn't too vague so that it's impossible to answer. I remember asking about this long time ago on another board and one anon said something about how old software influences the end result, any idea what could he have meant with this?

Doesn't have to be just coloring, I'd appreciate anything related to early 00s art style(s) and ways to imitate it. Line art, what tools / pens etc. should be used, trends in how eyes or hair were drawn etc. Again fairly vague, but I'll appreciate anything.

Funny that I'm seeing this here now, I have watched hide channels full head course and I feel like I've really underrated that channel. Never bothered because it seemed like he mostly posts 1 hour videos of him sketching while talking. It's about the most comprehensive head course I've seen so far even though he's basically just using loomis he's explaining it more detailed and with extra steps, also how to adapt it to anime style.

He's very thorough. If you understand Japanese and are patient his channel is pretty much the best one I can think of on top of my head.
As you can expect with analytical thinkers though, he's not good at promoting himself and his business isn't appealing, hence the low view count compared to people like Saitou or Marc etc.

>>6192853
This is a vague question. Not all artists from that time drew the same way. It's a bit as if in 30 years from now someone was asking "how to draw like in the 2020s": there wouldn't be a single answer.
So my advice would be actually to work on comprehending what you like first, otherwise you can't know what to study or look for if you're not even sure yourself.
Start with one artist (or an anime) from that time period you like best, and study them for some time.
From a process standpoint, same story here. Work at finding a process which suits the person you are and the result you want (what you posted so far isn't really different to what's made nowadays in essence, only the style aka lines is/are).

i wanted to elaborate on what some anon said about the western looking thing, im sure theres a better image that explain this i dont have it atm, but basically is this, western drawfags tend to draw the eyes flat on the face like the face of a gorilla, so whenever they rotate the face the eyes are too close together but they are almost level as if the eye sockets where flat and the nose bridge too like a gorilla face, the eye height also is higer than regular anime style, the jaw is more boxy along with the chin being more prominent, all this is alright desu maybe not the eyes but is okay but not when you are drawing anime, because the difference is obvious, this is iwhere it comes the meme shovel face, because anime jaws/chin are like that also the eyes/eyesockets are bigger and the face is more like an ayy unironically, you can see on Wada's art that it follows the basics that im talking about.

to summarize to avoid drawing western looking shit, remember the shovel face, eyes are usually below the middle point in the whole head counting the hair, forehead is big, eyesockets are big, small jaw and thats pretty much the basic stuff.

I think the scale of the circle was more or less ok, the issue was that I pulled the jaw too close to the cranium which caused me to raise the eyes to compensate, making the overall face look bigger. multiply layer makes your values darker each time you use it. i usually use it to darken the overall values before coloring. but sometimes it's good to use like some sort of undertones. it really is a trial and error. the more you get used to using it, the less layers you will be using. and if you want to achieve something that you know you can do by just directly painting it, just do it on a different layer.
