i dunno how helpful this is to answering your question but this was my progress over the past few years, >>6189614 being my latest of this particular boy. For the most part I drew at least 1 piece a day though some were far more complex than others; so id say i was drawing minimum 2 hours and max 6 (i do have a job where i paint signs however, im not sure how much this contributed to my gains but i still want to take it into account.) I think as long as you keep a steady pace you will be able to draw cute boys in no time

Not sure about this one. For one they were supposed to be twin brothers with different aesthetics, not sure how well I translated that. Two the overall feel is off, looks amateurish, I don't really finish a lot of pieces on this styles and I kinda like the character on the left the one on the right gives a strong "tumblr" energy.

The water effects look okay but the wave looks like trash. I didn't want they to look handsome, but average, but still somewhat attractive, I think I kinda got that right in a ways, but still, I think it's easy to tell I don't have as much experience with this style as I want. I kinda consider it to be a failure. Lots of failures this week.

I think you actually did a really good job of making the facial features be the same (in a 3D sense), but I still have "anime trust issues." The biggest source of my uncertainty is probably that we see the left one from a bit above, but we see the right one from a bit below.

The issue is that I understand the 3D nature of the facial features to be similar, even despite the fact that we're seeing them from different angles and with slightly different expressions (which is a compliment to your skill.) But honestly I don't trust that it's not just my imagination, when I know that quite a lot of cartoon/manga universes have characters with extremely similar faces.

Because many cartoons rely so much on using hair, accessories, and other non-facial and non-body cues to distinguish characters. Unfortunately, you are already forced to use these cues to show their unique abilities and personalities.

Basically, by choosing:

>that situation (them being twins but with different aesthetics)
>and that you are only doing a single picture
you've really challenged yourself so don't even feel bad at all because you didn't even fail.

If you too have some "anime trust issues" though, I think the only solution is to play the game. As in, draw more with these two, assuming people will see multiple. For example, in a short comic, or, just in a handful of other high quality illustrations like this one.

Good job though, I am out of ideas and sorry if I read too much into your post, but I think it was actually a really good insight into some of the issues people may face themselves with making characters.
