Today's Beg Challenge: Draw Brent Eviston.

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

Sticky:

New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q

Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3uxMdokX68

REMINDER TO IGNORE POSTS VIOLATING RULE 1
"All images and discussion should pertain to the critique of visual artwork."
(ex art dumps, posts without text, posters that don't ask questions or seek help)

Loomis really. Also you built the surrounding based off a horizon line grid, but didn't incorporate the girl in with it; or at least, did so very poorly.

I would suggest more anatomy before drawing characters with set pieces.

Don't fall into the Loomis meme, it'll hold you back at least 6 months. Read Michael Hampton's figure design and invention and remember to practice with simpler figures or bodyparts in perspective before trying a full body, else you'll fail because of a lack of practice.
It will take a while, no matter how simple it seems it takes time to build the technical skill to pull it off even if you understand the concepts

I was just testing if the self portraits I've been doing inconsistently have built in habits.
Like the one on printer paper is from a quick 15 second glance in the mirror, the others as the image faded from immediate memory, and having to conjure up differences (being creative with age), ideally I should be able to know my own face.
Just shows me I need much more practice, that's my thoughts on the 'exercise' though.

Loomis is extremely helpful, West or East most animu and others to a point were influenced by his books because they were easily available.

As far as the colors, no I don't think I studied any one person in particular for that effect, it's probably a collective of influences but if it helps when I was finished with the painting I felt like it resembled NC Wyeth and I've had people say similar comparisons to previous paintings I've said so if anything in my painting interests you I would recommend him, his paintings are plentiful and equally beautiful as they are plentiful.

I need my hand held as if I was mentally disabled.
I need a lesson, and then a series of proposed exercises.
I dont care about great detailed explanations, I just want to be told WHAT TO DO.
Dont just tell me 'practice these concepts until you get the hang of it'. NO.
I need SPECIFIC exercises, I need to be told exactly WHAT to do and how many times and what variations (if any) I should make.

I would also just imply the footprints in the middleground, foreground footprints are fine. I know that in the desert atmospheric refraction isn't that strong, but I feel that they are too detailed compared to the general looseness of the dunes.

Firstly don't worry about having amazing perspective at your level right now. Proportion is learned through figure drawing classes. What you need to work on is the very starting basics. Practice your lines every day, you lack a ton of line confidence. Props for not chicken scratching

>>6185859
You are overthinking it, literally. Props for charting out all this mathematical perspective stuff in the background, but at your level you need to practice less of that and practice more freeform volumes and construction. Your drawing is extremely stiff and you lack understanding on how volumes are *attached* to each other. Your bewbs also show just how little you understand how basic forms fit in 3d space despite having so much background perspective shit going on. You just need to practice complex forms. Peter Han dynamic sketching or Hampton or whatever will probably help.

This is the forms practice that they start you on, this isn't exclusive information. Every high level arts school is going to start all beginners on this type of training.

Don't just draw boxes, all the forms, merge them, morph them, sculpt them, fuck around and experiment with forms after you have practiced tons of boxes and spheres and cylinders.

Well, you can still be aware of vanishing points. But you need to build a natural sense of "spatial awareness" without focusing so hard and overthinking everything. The idea is to train your brain to think of your paper like a window into a 3d world in a very natural and instinctive sense. You can only really practice this by drawing lots of forms and then practicing on how to attach those forms together realistically and make them give the illusion of depth.

What you are doing by charting out all those vanishing points and perspective lines despite not knowing how to draw a model is merging two fundamentals together that you haven't practiced enough individually. You have to build instincts, you have build a dynamic sense of form in your brain and how you draw. Then once you have this you can get better drawing figures, and then applying those figures to a correct perspective.

Like Nsio says here "PERCEPTION AND INSIGHT"

Sorry the way you phrased it just made me think you were one of those deluded /beg/'s who make excuses when getting real crit.

>As for the anime thing, I don't have interest in anything else nor am I drawing for anything else but fun.

Thats fine that your goals are to draw anime, but you are too new to understand that learning the fundamentals transcends all styles of art. Learning basic line, shape, volume, figure, and value from traditional sources is the base requirement for any illustration. Anime or oil painting. Which is why im telling you to never mention "style" to yourself ever again until you have improved in all those things, you will never achieve the style you want without going through the fundamental learning that every good artist has ever had to go through. You can draw what you want to draw in your free time, but your art obviously shows your complete lack of experience in even learning the fundamentals.

I can tell you are doing drawabox from those pics. Don't start there. Look for Brent Eviston and Michael Hampton. I would also recommend reading through Bert Dodson or Betty Edwards just to improve your basic copying skills which will really help you with your art confidence as a beginner.

The other reason why we all tell you to stop drawing anime is because anime as a style is extremely misleading to beginners. You are going to pick up extremely bad habits copying anime without real fundamental knowledge backing it up.

You aren't going to understand when Japanese artists heavily modify reality to get what they want and WHY they do it. It's going to make all of your art when you draw your own original artwork look completely flat and trash because of all of your false presumptions that anime as taught you. You will pick up fucking awful habits that limit your abilities in the long run.

This is not the right question to ask, because at your level any experienced artist will say "All of them"

You need to be stating a goal, then asking how you can reach that desired effect.

Firstly, your lines are not chicken scratchy but they are just too sketchy without purpose. You are obscuring too many of your flaws by over shading and over correcting all of your lines.

Secondly, your figure is warped. You need to work on constructing the figure with basic shapes first and making sure the orientation of pose makes sense.

Overall you will improve a lot by just working on gesture, construction, and then anatomy for the smaller details like the eyes looking bad and skull not looking correct.

I know that too, I just haven't been able to truly grasp it yet as I've been learning. But the small progress I have made keeps me going.
>read keys to drawing already, obviously once isn't enough.
your point on anime is true, but I wouldn't draw otherwise, but now that I have some new curriculum I'll just be drawing that for the near future instead to hopefully ingrain more fundies before touching something so exaggerated now. I do lack extreme experience on fundamentals as I have neglected them recently.

As for OC, I have absolutely no desire for anything but to copy images I like, in both reality and from reference. At most I do the occasional portrait of family, which to be honest as you've said has those flaws you described at the moment and I've only been ignoring them; no true form.

So I will check out the second guy you mentioned in addition to the books I just looked up.
I'd prefer more vintage recommendations, so I'll have to do independent research on that when I have time.

Well don't try to copy that in your art then because it looks like shit, scanlines are an artificial byproduct of a technology not something an artist literally reproduces.

>I have absolutely no desire for anything but to copy images I like, in both reality and from reference

Then why are you doing draw a box in the pics you posted? Copying anime is seriously easy as shit, I promise you if you just copied anime every day for a year without even reading any books or tutorials you will have become a decent photocopier. Being able to accurately copy things is important, but it's one of the easiest skills to learn on your own in drawing, it's basically just teaching your brain to solve a puzzle.

> which to be honest as you've said has those flaws you described at the moment and I've only been ignoring them; no true form.

But you don't need to learn form to copy anime or portraits. You need to learn proportion, measuring, line, and value. Over a long time you will accrue greater and greater observational skills and be able to copy things as realistically as you want without ever learning about form or perspective.

You learn form and perspective so that you can draw your own scenes and your own ideas. Which is what basically everyone on /ic/ is here for, to be able to make their own animus and their own hentai and shit. What are you doing here?

Well since you asked.
I wanted to look at another 4chan sticky after completing a different one.
I'm the male equivalent of a wine aunt without the alcoholism because of early retirement. Free time split amongst hobbies and I never touched art so I figured I'd start now.
I just like the learning process so I figured I'd go all in even if my only audience is easily impressed kids and a spouse who wanted me to be a bit more expressive, even if it's just copying an occasional thing I like.
I'll do rare requests for them but that's pretty much why I'm bothering with learning the methods, besides the fun of trying to wrap my head around something outside my comfort zone.

Ignoring the blog, I'm here because I've been on 4chan since it was made and just got curious about other boards with all my free time, yet paradoxically there isn't enough time to do everything I want to do.

Typically everybody here is young, poor, and ambitious. It seems like you are complacent, wealthy, and a little too arrogant to improve in a meaningful way.

btw the sticky is extremely outdated and pretty shitty. And drawing isn't something you magically get good at because you have a ton of free time and you read a sticky and some books. You have to think of it like lifting, it takes years of dedication and hard work to build enough muscle to make a big difference in your physique.
