Today's Beg Challenge: Draw a coffee mug and a bagel.

If you are a /beginner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

Sticky:

Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3uxMdokX68

REMINDER TO IGNORE POSTS VIOLATING RULE 1
"All images and discussion should pertain to the critique of visual artwork."
(ex art dumps, posts without text, posters that don't ask questions or seek help)

Well it's like I said, spheres are very uninuitive to me. I can't seem to "feel their form"

Like for example Loomis teaches to "cut off" the sides of the sphere for drawing heads and it always comes out wonky unless I'm spending like 20-30 minutes breaking my head over the internal structure of the sphere

just practice, and by practice its focused study not random doodling
problem is people learn and improve at different speeds and improvement happens very gradually so its easy to be discouraged, but dont be, just practice what you want to improve on and want to learn and the rest will come with time

>> No.6180249

my tips would be to actually study shading and how light/shadow works, it feels like kind off improvised based o random bits and piece of info you may have read/heard

for readability it got worse, you made her figure so dark its hard to understand what youre looking at, and at a thumbnail level its unreadable completely besides a vague human shape, which isnt bad per se but the bg is light all around her with only the distant bg being dark so it makes no sense for her ot be this dark

along with that you seem to show a light source in the distant bg, but this distant bg is basically just shadow while the foreground is what shows actual light so its a bit of a confusing mess

infact based on the pic overall id give her shadows coming from the distance and the light source coming from the sides and camera

>> No.6180261

>>6180240

>>6180249
true, I guess the idea at the moment for me wasn't readability per se, but moreso going for the style of the artist I've been copying in which distant light sources and dimly lit characters are quite common- but it makes sense that from the point of a thumbnail it may as well be nothing because there's no distinction between fg/bg

thanks for the criticism

Let's use this drawing from a previous thread, as it really shows how things began to go wrong:
>ribcage
The ribcage is drawn too small which is curious, because the ribcage is fine in the image which you drew over. It's one of the few things the original anon got correct.
>hands
The figure's hands are too large, and the right hand is larger than the left. The right forearm is also larger than the left forearm.
>hips
The hips are canted in the wrong direction. If the right leg is raised, then the right hip should also be elevated. This is something that the original anon got wrong as well.
>legs
The right leg is larger than the left leg, especially the calf. The right knee should be pointed away from the viewer.

The core issue is that the reference you used had fundamental errors that you didn't recognize. A good drawing can't be built upon a bad foundation. It's fine if you want to use a pose from a drawing, but you also need to develop a critical eye to keep you from making the same errors in your own work. Hope this helps!

i guess the very first was bob ross thats what wanted me to start painting in the beginning. then i wanted to do portraiture, drawmixpaint is good for that. just try to identify what u need to learn next and focus on that one thing, thats my advice for a true beginner. just keep your goals simple and focus on one thing at a time. incorporate as much as u want, but just keep your focus on the thing ur trying to learn.

I would probably do something more close to this. More texture using some textured brush, play around with the colors and bloom and give the drawing a more atmospheric surreal look to it. But I think that's more of a stylistic choice, the thing that bothers me most about this work in particular is the lack of contrast between all the colors, too much black and not enough other colors to contrast to everything. Kinda kills the atmosphere. specially with the background, but that is something that have 1000 different solutions.

I think the principle is there, is more about the contrast between the characters and background, you can do this in many ways, just so they pop a bit more and the fires in the back are a bit more hazy with the atmosphere so they are not as much glaring points taking of the eye from the main characters, unless that's what you want.

Color is made by HUE + VALUE. You either lower the value (so instead of bright yellow you use darker yellow) or change hue to right/left a little (so instead of yellow you go for orange/green). Its all about using the color picker wheel.

nta but despite you being correct you have to take into account how the person is going for exaggerated anatomy and posing simply making them go to a less stylized and exaggerated figure isnt really the correct way to go, but just make sure the exaggeration is kept and is done right

kinda like old masters always drawing for an ideal instead of drawing the model 1:1 the context of the drawing needs to be taken into account

It's understanding the forms in perspective that is important, not some arbitrary number of primitives you have to grind out. Vilppu and Michael Hampton have good examples of basic forms you need to be able to replicate in the first couple of chapters in their books.

>>6180916
It's a bit messy and requires some preparation and skill to sharpen. Bit of a sharp learning curve for a complete beginner, so it's easier to start with graphite. Once you are over the hump of handling charcoal it's fine for beginners. Since you have to use a light touch to not break it and be careful not to make a mess, it actually teaches good habits.

A lot of pencil sharpeners will break charcoal leads.
You use a razor blade to expose more of the lead so you use the side the pencil for a variety of strokes. You can use sand paper to get an even finer point so you can fill in tone much more smoothly. It allows you to fill the gaps caused by the tooth of the paper. But that's more for academic/atelier style drawing.

That was taken into account. The construction of the figure must still follow some fundamental rules (that the old masters came up with). If it was on digital and I colored it, it would be good enough even for social media. That's how much more efficient it is to draw from instinct. The benefits outweigh everything.
I'm learning a lot about the curves on the body and the ratios to remember by doing what I'm doing.
If you want to prove a point to me you'd have to redline the anatomy and point out where it's technically wrong. Because I'm only using the ref as a reference.

Good attempt. You need to make more careful measurements during the construction phase. Always compare the angles and relative positions of major landmarks (the hat, nose, chin, shoulder, etc.) with the ref.
As for shading, your mid tones are way too dark. If you pay attention to the ref, the light source is almost directly in front of the model's face. So there are no hard shadows anywhere on her face, only very soft gradations.

I like the colors. If you learn proportions and anatomy, I think you can make some really cool fantasy characters, like table top RPG artwork.

The hand is really big, the legs are just flat, and the daggers on the legs are just floating there. The gauntlet is also flat, it needs to be more cylindrical to feel like it is wrapped around the arm.

Learn some stuff about basic shapes and figure sketching, and keep coming back to this character to apply the stuff you learn. It'll be cool to see how this character design improves as you learn.

I was thinking this too. I think you nailed the look for a Final Fantasy character, it just needs some energy to it. Have the cape swoop out and back down around the boots, same motion for the tail. Have the hair on the right side of the head flow up and back a little bit, and the bangs on the left side of the head flow to the left side of the page. Like a gust of wind blowing passed the character.

I like swirling motions, so I'm a bit biased. I don't use digital... so I hope my arrows are somewhat helpful.

Besides that, maybe work on hands and feet. After that, some solid inking in and I think you've got yourself a really nice looking character.

What a tough pose you tried to draw
firstly, having characters interact, and a background is a hard to do - so nice work trying something complicated

Sadly, theres a ton of stuff wrong with this - overall everything looks stiff, disproportionate and flat

The pose is really awkward - and the limbs are really long - the cigarette character's arms would be dragging on the floor
the other characters hands look like folded paper - especially the finger holding the knife

keep trying though, it was a complicated idea and I'm sure you learnt a lot from it

Draw a 1000 crash bandicoots, and you'll likely develop a way to draw him that's faster and faster - but if all you draw is that then when you try and make something else, it will likely be Crash bandicoot-esque characters. It's good to have a balance of life study and art study
