In this thread we practice and share pieces of figure drawing, one of the most important ways of learning form, depth and even values, mostly focused but not limited to the study of the human body.

This is in an effort to train your observational skills and develop your ability to understand what you're looking at, how to simplify it and how to put it in paper.

You may want to:
*Practice at least 10 figure drawings exercises every day.
*Ask and OBSERVE others' works in order to implement useful approaches to your own process.
*Post no matter your skill level, the point is to learn, not seek outside recognition, if you get called a /beg/ that's par for the course.
*Use any medium you feel most comfortable with, be that digital or traditional.
*Draw as quickly and efficiently as possible, focus on the general form and DO NOT get caught in on the details.

Some resources to help practice:

I am planning up some works involving fatter characters. when it comes to gesture, how can draw up gesture with fat characters?

you're trying to understand foreshortened forms without understanding the forms themselves first.
you'll have an easier time analyzing poses like these once you have a better understanding of basic poses from more neutral camera angles.

The bulk should be a part of the flow of the gesture. This is my attempt. I've only started doing gestures this week, so this was just a quick stab at it. I should have made the shoulder line much steeper, and really curved his body over the front foot to emphasize the twisting and throwing motion.

not the best, but I'd do it something like this. Don't stress over gesture or whatnot, but just draw form. Place the right forms in the right place, and you'll be fine. Btw, I don't think this pose would be strong enough for an action manga or anything, I'd probably have to do more research on sumo poses and learn to draw more impactful scenes

From what I've seen of professionals doing, whether they use a stick figure or a fuller figure depends on how much they need/ want to express a particular motion. Proko's video shows him doing both. I'm just looking for big curves, not really thinking about what the individual pieces are doing.

I think 90 sec gestures are not good for developing the drawing skills you most need. Try to do 5-10 min poses, if you can. (1-2 hours a day) They're a cool "art school" exercise, but it's just not practical for learning.

>> No.6176666

My goal with the low timed ones were to get a better grasp on the human form in general, so my thought process was that low timing ones are better since I get more input in the time I do them.
That in mind would you say 5-10 minutes are better for this purpose as well?

>> No.6176718

>>6176666
NTA but ye, the more time you have to draw the more you can think about what you are drawing which means easier time absorbing knowledge

also if what you want if purely the human form then gesture wont help much with that, gesture is more to capture the motion and action of the pose

you can just set up your drawing time like a figure drawing class tho, start with 1min poses for a time, then go up to 2-3, then 5min ad finally end the day with a 10min-15min figure drawing trying to do your best to get detail and anatomy i those 10-15min

Who is the best resource for getting into figure drawing?

Vilppu? Huston? Hampton? Proko? Someone else?

>> No.6185415

the sketchdaily site has tabs for structures, animals and vegetation but if you're asking for like, still life, your best bet is gonna be just using Pinterest or Flickr and searching "still life photography"
personally, if I want a curated timed image set I use an app called gesture drawing practice on android (the one by dark mat13r, it might be on iOS too but idk) which lets me upload my own photos to a library. the app's not perfect but it works decent for my needs just don't pay for the subscription perks, the Pinterest function is usually broken and there's really no benefit other than that plus the extra native libraries you get are kinda trash tier

if you're never gonna draw fat people there isn't any point in building that aspect of your visual library and if you ever change your mind you can always learn it when you need it. drawing muscled up figures, however, is a great way to improve your general figure drawing ability because it's wayyy easier to discern anatomy and general body landmarks. that's one of the reasons why it's advisable to start learning figure drawing with male subjects vs female. female features are usually much more subtle and thus harder to get right

these are both pretty bad reference for gesture since one is draped and the other one is seated
your line of action is extremely straight in both of your drawings and its better to break backs when practicing instead of having stiff gestures
there is also flow to consider, see how the gesture of the back flows into the leg on the seated pose

For some reason, when I try to capture the gesture from a reference it ends up like the left two images, but if I subsequently try it using those drawings, I get the rightmost, which feels much more natural/fluid (proportion issues aside)

It’s really because of the line of action you built the pose on.
While it does connect the leg all the way up to the head, it’s too straight making you lose the pose’s asymmetric rhythms.

The right leg comes out of the torso at a pretty steep angle but you straightened the whole cylinder to make it fit the line of action’s overarching narrative.

It’s an early on mistake, but besides that you have done a pretty good job at constructing the figure off it!

You're doing really good bro, kudos on tackling such hard poses. Focusing on basic shapes is exactly the right thing to be doing here, I'd just advice checking alignments more carefully. I drew some vertical lines on your sketch and on the reference, see how they differ? They shouldn't differ too much if you want to catch the gesture or pose that you're drawing.

The left guideline is meant to line up with the pit of her neck, the middle guideline lines up with her heel, and the right guideline lines up with her butt.

Also, nothing wrong with chicken scratching, if you clean it up. I'd lower the opacity of the sketch and draw over it to clean it up, so you can better critique your own work

I follow along with a discord group, i think its like 6x30s, 7x90s, 2x230s, 2x300s. I hate the quick drawings 30s is totally useless. But i think its jsut for loosening up and its basically only 3min of madness.

For short drawings i think 90s is the best. 300s is a little long for a pencil sketch. But 10 min is my favorite for planning, fixing, and detailing. But i do those on my own time. At 20-30min i would do a pen and marker drawing.

Timed figure drawing is the best because if you fuck up, you’re like “ahh it was timed, I’ll jsut do better on the next one” and if its going really well its like “better to stop while im ahead and not over work the drawing”

>> No.6211109

>>6210995
Sorry i realized that i didnt really answer your question.

30s is useful for loosening up, but dont spend half an hour doing 30s poses
90s is the best and most helpful for a “gesture” / sketch in my opinion
10min is the best for a figure drawing, you should definitely do atleast 2-3 10 min drawings each session to practice detailing and polishing.

If you skip the longer figure drawings you will never be able to finish anything and be trapped in an infinite loop of generating sloppy sketches. If you only do 10min drawings, you wont be able to layout a figure and you miss out on adding new poses to your memory banks.

10 drawings, that's it, might not seem like much but for many it's a very focus intensive work. If you feel like that's not enough for you or if you are not satisfied with how they came out you can do even more.

Of course this is just a recommendation, if you wanna do just one with a lot of focus on anatomy / detal you can, I just don't recommend that for begs and ints such as myself lmao

Gonna try to work my way through Huston's figure drawing for artists so should be posting here often. Only read the first 4 chapters so far so I've had explained the general concepts of structure, perspective and gesture - but not yet got to the bits about the actual construction of the human body.

These are the drawings I've done so far ordered from earliest to most recent L to R top row -> L to R bottom row. Crits and feedback very welcome.

I think my main issue for this stage is that I often let the idea of genture get away from me and spend too long stressing over the details of countors. All of these took me mcuch longer longer than a typical 30/60/120 second gesture drawing and that's a big reason why.

Alright here’s my shot at it with your reference. With a reference in such an Extreme perspective like that you should find form overlap where you can. Notice how I made the stomach/abs overlap. It’s also helpful to attempt finding some sort of a vanishing point and drawing it as a boxy form first

Take note of multiple back muscle diagrams and also watch out for what is being depicted. Some muscles and bones overlay so it might look different whether it's focusing on the latissimus, teres, scapula, infraspinatus...

I don't know if I'm reading your drawing right, but note that the shoulder blades have a noticable gap inbetween them. It's where the trapezius sits. And I think the big overlaying muscle under them is the latissimus dorsi.
