Im pretty sure you still can pull off your ideas as an original product, anon, you just need to shift your setups slightly and learn from this clusterfuck of a series' mistakes to make your own project stand on it's own feet. Besides, it's not just character design you need to focus on, but story writting and setup as well, with those in mind you can derive to a different product.

Just because someone did this or that first doesnt mean you cant try and be as original as you can be, and if anything, nothing is stopping you from learning from it for the sake of your own project.

Character design is almost like a science. People have been studying it for commercial use for more than a century, so we know alot about what works and what doesn't.

But at the end of the day, it's all you. Just drawing what you like to draw and drawing it alot. No book or tool will help you. Well that's not entirely true, find tools that you feel comfortable using and that keep you going. But still the important part is that they keep you drawing. As long you keep drawing and apply the foundations to your work you will improve!

If you keep experimenting and find knew interests you will develop your own taste and developing something completing different!
The underlying idea may be unoriginal, but the execution doesn't have to be. It can be different. It can be yours. And with years of commitment and experience of drawing behind you it will be.
