In Asia? That's not true at all. Spongebob airs on some channels, not as popular as say shin chan, anpanman, yokai watch, Conan, the tiger show, maruko or pokemon but asian kids know who Spongebob is if you're talking about East Asia as a whole it is pretty popular. If only Japan maybe less from my experience but it seems to be well-received and is still airing on several channels today if you do a quick search

It is very popular in other places in Asia not just Japan. Japanese media is extremely popular in all parts of Asia and even if you're not Japanese chances are all the kids shows you will grow up with will be children's anime and the occasional American cartoon.
