/beg/ & /int/ - Beginner and Intermediate Thread

IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint
4. does anybody actually read this?

READ THE STICKY:

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Is it just me or is this book laid out terribly? The first plates are complex perspective methods with virtually no instruction, then it gives a short method on creating a framework for a figure, then it jumps right into bone anatomy. It might just be that this wasn't written for low iq 21th century audiences, but it's a bit intimidating and I'm not sure what exactly I'm supposed to be practicing from it. Do I copy from the book? Do I draw from imagination?

don't fret too much over gestures especially if you're really really at the beginnings, what makes a gesture "good' is an hazy concept, really hard to grasp even when you get better at drawing.
I think a better fundie to waste your time on would be either proportions or shape design.
the former is really easy to grasp, is what I'm doing as big as the reference?
the latter is as confusing as gesture drawing but at least you can pick it up copying other artists faster than gestures.
I know it sounds like a meme, but picking up good shapes goes a long long way

Yes, one of the best things you can learn is not to get too attached. Lately I'll do 4-5 sketches just to try out different variations. Deleting shit after I'm halfway through painting is also not uncommon. And finally, drop whatever you're doing the moment you realize you're polishing a turd, just redraw if you think the idea is worth it.

they seem alright so far, just need to focus on the object more then what you are doing now.
The main thing you should be focusing on is proportion. Every one of your drawing seems lazy or drawn quickly, try to take your time and measure out some of the drawing. As for the books most of the beginner books teaches the same fundamentals so it shouldn't be a problem reading multiple of them around the same time

Construction legit clicked with me last night

It's especially useful when you are drawing things in unique perspectives as it allows you to rotate a body in 3D space

If you are copying a reference though construction is only gonna help you get proportions right - which if you are already decent with anatomy doesn't help too much - as you can otherwise quickly glance at the reference do a line of action and plot the base shapes instead

You don't need to use blocks for everything and blocks aren't mandatory. Blocks are a popular rec because perspective is very easy to read with blocks. Construction is supposed to be a scaffolding you use to minimize mistakes. If it's not helping you, then don't use it.

Im personally not a fan of using blocks, they help with perspective but make things hard to visualize. I would maybe start a new layer and start drawing in body lines to see if you can visualize your drawing better.

I'm faaaar from being a pro but here's my take on it:
- Knees should be flared more, I tought he was just sitting on something on tought it looked fine but when I read it was supposed to be kneeling on a post, yeah then something looks off with the proportion of his tighs and their orientation. Look at Itachi's famous pose and how his knees are far away from each others.
- His torso is too straight. Like I said, it would look perfect he was just sitting on this telephone pole but when you kneel, your back is arched.

I'll make sure to do that don't know why I didn't think to do that before.
I still kind of get messed up when it says to "draw blind" since when I do that I just totally mess it up by overshooting or mangling up the lines, I also have a hard time trying to constantly remember the "look, hold and draw" technique while I'm drawing.
Will probably go over the chapter again and try to "slow down" since I definitely finish the projects a bit before before the targeted time (not by much but should probably stop that bad habit before it gets worse), might help if I have a timer or something.
Thank you for the help, will probably post here again once I've gone over it again.

My studies and ref stuff always turn out better than my imagination, which I guess is going to be true for a long while, but my real issue is that I don't know how to finish pieces to make them attractive ie - lines/detailing etc and how to make stuff distinctive. My pieces end up looking like in pic related. It's a study which I did in the video. What direction should I take in order to get better finished quality stuff? What am I lacking?
