I've stagnated hard because of my obsession with imagination drawing. There is this 15 year old girl (allegedly) on instagram who draws really beautiful figures and always writes "Sketchin from imagination :)" on her posts and it pisses me off and makes me jealous to no end. If anyone asks how she got that good she writes something like "idk haha tysm idk i just draw :)"

I've been grinding for years and I'm still nowhere near that level of imagination drawing, and I get mogged by some 15 year old. I constantly rail between feeling like she's lying and I got memed, and feeling like I just don't have talent. It's genuinely blackpilling either way. Either that shit is just not possible and she's lying, or I'm a talentless loser. Fuck it all, I hate drawing so much, I just HAD to pick one of the most genetics dependent hobbies ever. Fuck me so hard I hate it all.

Honestly tell me, am I just that insecure and easily impressed or is this actually impressive if it's really done by a 15 year old from imagination?

It's not like she's constructing some soulless mannequin and tastelessly slapping vague anatomical volumes onto them, it all feels coherent and really intelligently designed. The gesture is good and it all has very solid structure. If this isn't some 30 year old veteran neckbeard artist lying for instagram approval then it's over. Talent is unironically real.

This is a basic looking gesture drawing. If you think this is mindblowing, then yes, you're highly unskilled. At 15 years old, a natural born artist will draw competently enough to do something as basic as this. Also, if you're concerned about how old you are relative to your drawing skill, you might as well just stop drawing altogether. You're petty.

>>6150807
I don't think you fully understand what it takes to draw these things from imagination, this isn't "just a gesture drawing", it shows a lot of understanding in terms of anatomy, shape appeal and design, form, AND gesture. All from imagination too.

I mean, can you shit out something that is equivalently appealing and coherent right now? Without any references. Probably not. Pic rel is the best I can do but I'm 10 years older than her and I've been tryharding for 3 years and it's still incredibly off key, unappealing and uncanny. It's over.

There is absolutely no sense in getting so worked up over things that are out of your control like this, but I know you feel like this because you care and you WANT to reach those lofty heights.
You put hard work into what you can do now. YOU cared enough to put in the study and time, YOU had the grit and the determination to claw your way free of the /beg/ pit. Lek. Nah, I don’t post my work, I invite people to come draw with me. I don’t get anything out of sharing my work with less skilled people. That’s like being a black belt in a martial art and trying to impress a pizza delivery boy by breaking his arm. If someone is in my realm, they will draw in my presence. True skill must be witnessed in real-time. I could post a sketch that took me an hour and say it took me 5 minutes. Anyone here can do that. Even the best artists have to use reference, Yusuke Murata, Ruan Jia, Craig Mullins, etc. All of them use reference in their work, whether it be for constructing buildings or people, or using dolls or real life reference, a lot of good artists use it.

tl;dr no shame in using reference, seeing as 99% of artists use it.

You can do it right now anon. Like everything else in the world the more you do it the better you will get at it.
I hate looking for refs (and some of them would be illegal lmao) so I primarily draw from my head. It takes a lot longer and requires a lot of learning. Do a lot of figure and gesture drawing both from real life and from photos and don't just do the same thing when drawing each time. Change up your time you spend on each of them as well as what you are drawing with. I recommend 30 seconds, one minute, five min, ten min, half an hour for each session (doing multiple of the shorter ones).

Oh and I forgot to mention that doing thumbnails helps immensely. Even just drawing a small stick figure before you start the full drawing will really help to keep you on track and gives you something to work off of instead of trying to draw the full thing right away.

she takes figure drawing classes so it's not strange to be able to draw good figures from imagination if you combine experience with a talented individual. If you get used to drawing figure drawings you can build a better visual library of different poses. Now if someone were to draw academic and realistic anatomy and proportions completely accurately then I would call BS but her drawings are stylized so it's not unlikely she didn't use ref.
