If I wanted to experiment with cel animation (not feasible long term but it looks fun and I'd like to try once at least), what'd be the most economical way to actually get cels or something equivalent? The cheapest option I see, should it actually work, is baking acetate (in Leafland it's like $12 for a dozen actual papers vs the same price for about 65 sheets worth of baking acetate), but I imagine it might be too thick and/or permanently rolled up

Hey guys, got some questions.
First off, im new to the game so i don't know much, please correct me if i got
something glaringly wrong. Some of you may know hentai visual novels that have basic animations in it. The animation itself isn't looking too fancy, but it conveys quite good what it intends to do, lol. It really isn't that smooth looking and focuses on certain motions.
I would really like to know how this kind of animation-technique is called altough i already think that it might be "vector-animations"? Which software and resources would you recommend me to learn the this stuff?

Also just from pure obersvation without knowing anything, it seems like that this kind of
animation seems to be used in h-simulator games (in which you can interact in real time with the model, touch parts that will move in different motions, and other stuff), could this also still be a vector animation? Thanks in advance!

Im still learning so take it with a grain of salt
In terms of blender itself if you dont know where the timeline is or what's the difference between moving stuff in object mode or edit mode then you should start with bearing through basic tutorials on how to use the damn thing. Also blender is very shortcut heavy so if you are not using your keyboard for most functions look into that too since you are already going to waste a good chunk of your time.
In terms of animation you should be setting your keyframes to constant from the get go, lay out your poses one frame next to eachother and compare them with alt+scrollwheel. worry about the timing later, if you are planning on it only being viewed from your camera view you should mainly compare the poses and their silhouette from said view, once you are either happy with what you got or tired enough to not give a shit how it looks then start dragging the keyframes around and look for a clearer timing, make sure you applied keys even for bones you havent used yet just in case you change something on one frame it wont unknowingly change shit elsewhere. Once you are done with that start adding inbetweens.
shift+e(inbetween),alt+e(relax),ctrl+e(overshoot) will interpolate between the previous and next frame in a boring computer fashion so you should adjust them to follow the arc you made up. if you cant think of an arc put a bezier curve on your viewport or sketch it or some othershit, speaking of arcs, blender has a thing called motion paths which can be useful to identify bits that are out of sync but you should not use it as a replacement for actual animation arcs since its comparing bone position but not the character itself.
Also be ready to waste a lot of time and redo a bunch of shit, most of the little details that you need to know to make using 3d programs bearable have to be learned by fucking up

>> No.6153983

>>6153871
thanks for the info dump! lotta what ur saying is lost on me cuz i haven't really reached that far deep in the rabbit hole but I'm sure it'll come to me when I do

animating/animation wise tho, is there a good place to get animateable models? I'm assuming that guilty gear model was ripped from the game, kinda wanna see how fun/enjoyable/hard/easy it'll be to try animating despite being in my baby brained blender state

>> No.6153995

>>6153983
smutba.se/open3dlab is the first that comes to mind, take your time, there's a lot of different aspects to get used to so dont think you need to know about everything just to get started.
Also something that still fucks me over is that you need to always consider the order of the armature, since animating takes a long time what you are keyframing and moving around is most likely parented to another bone that you might have keyframed and moved around before which means that you are going to be wrestling with your past self a lot of the time keep notes around to make sure you dont start moving stuff out of order.
Also since you said you were starting out i had a feeling this might help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba0RbmonE6o&ab_channel=NeoCranium

producation animation goes through a lot of phases.
a lot of filters get applied on top to correct color, adjust lighting ect. there are a lot of tools to also adjust the lines because alias data can be used to alter it in many ways. a lot of those tools are closed off and proprietary or found on github.

in essence all you need to know is that they can be basically overdone. the only times you will find that are fairly raw in production is how bright the colors are, how sharp the lines are and how just unfinished it tends to be, hentai typically fits this category.

It's not Matt, the animations are by Jonathan Djob Nkondo

They have a deal set up where Jonathan animates stuff, and Matt shills them on twitter as NFTs. Matt get's paid because of his namesake being attached to a cool animation, and Jonathan get's paid due to his work being shilled by the "creator" of Pepe. Think ghostwriting but with art instead of stories/songs.

Check out Jonathan's animations and compare

how long would a 5 minute animation take for some of you skilled animators? solo

>> No.6168840

>>6168750
This is extremely dependant on a whole fuckton of things so I don't think it can be answered that well
>How long will you be working on it each day?
>What's the frame rate?
>How detailed are the things you'll be animating?
>Is every frame a unique hand drawn frame?
>Will you be reusing assets?
>Will you make use of 2D, 3D or a combo of both?
etc.
For example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-gbAi5UIg0
This makes use of a lot of images that were drawn in photoshop and then animated in AE, assets and animations are reused a lot. It took the creator I believe around 3-4 months to make working part time while recieving feedback from the musician
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWnqX41JHuM with documentary on it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKsG3E7TLl4
This took the animator 3 years to make and can be pretty detailed, though I'd say he probably worked on it in his spare time semi-frequently too which might be explained in the doc which I haven't seen yet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zj0JOHJR-s
Dunno how long this took but it's an example of someone using a mix of 2D/3D and seemingly pinned rigging deformation animation
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voices_of_a_Distant_Star
This was a 25 minute OVA made entirely by Makoto Shinkai, the director for stuff like Your Name(Pretty sure this ova launched his director career) in 7 months time. It makes use of a combination of 3D and 2D

Do you guys have any recommendations for what art program to use on iPad if I want to create animations with Audio? I've been using procreate for a while and just started using it to create animations, but it seems Procreate is fundamentally unable to add audio to animations and are just for drawing. Is there any other good alternative programs I could use? I used to use flash a lot as a kid but that seems entirely out of the question now that almost no places left on the internet supports flesh plugins.

I know for more simple animations I could probably add sounds in post, but I rather specifically want to animate to the beat of music which means I need the audio alongside the animation to make sure it is synced correctly.

What do you mean by 'good'? Be more specific.

Also, it heavily depends on where you are in the world and what you want to storyboard on. Starting on kindergarten shows or in smaller studios is probably more achievable, then you can work your way up to where you want to be)

You won't get hired without at least a basic understanding of basic film shots and composition and a good sense of animation. You don't have to be a GREAT animator, but knowing timing, spacing, posing etc is going to be vital, because you are basically making the skeleton the animators are going to work off of. These days, storyboarders almost act like key animators on some shows. Knowing some of the basic storyboard visual language (grids to show perspective everywhere, camera moves, etc) will put you a step above other people trying to break into storyboarding, as these things are things students often forget.

I'm an animator so I'm not an expert, but as far as I'm aware storyboarding is quite competitive, so don't give up if you hit some roadblocks, its just a harder job to break into sometimes.

Here's some resources I had saved which hopefully help.

Cheap imitation of VHS and cel animation, since they're two separate things you need to think in two stages
1. Cel animation
>read into the limitations of cel animation and utilize, but don't abuse, them: some examples include
>>drop shadows on higher up layers (for instance, a cel 1 layer above the background will have less shadow than one 3 layers above
>>cels fading as more are layered on (and limiting your layers to account for this, probably no more than 6)
>>damage to the cels themselves such as warping and dust/scratches
>Research practical effects like double exposure and making to make their digital equivalents look more authentic
>Try to emulate film photography as much as you can - match the colour curves, film grain, etc
2. VHS
>just apply a VHS filter in after effects or something and tweak

Been waiting for a TVPaint 11 crack and at this point I may just buy it.

I found some partnered schools EDU codes that bring the price of Pro down to 315 Euros and with the value of the Euro tanking, it's even more of a deal. The codes USAAU and USCIA both work.

I assume though if I check out and send them my school's student ID, they'll reject me for using another school's code.

Anyone manage to do this?

Aaron Blaise's website also has a way to get the same 315 Euro discount, but you have to pay $200 for his yearly membership or pay for the monthly membership and wait 90 days. But I'm wondering if it's a generic or unique code. If it's generic, anyone have it?

Cartoon designs like Apu aren't really 3d objects that can be rotated like that. A lot of model sheets have talk of "cheating" angles: things change around in a way that doesn't really make sense for a physical object, but flies anyway because it's a cartoon. Like what happens with Mickey's ears when he turns.
Some aren't meant to be seen from certain angles at all. I think that might be the case for Apu. So much of the genre of apucraft depends on the fact it's variations on that one drawing might make a profile angle look very out of place, even if it's got that tasteful deliberate incorrectness and is designed to the best of your ability according to whatever Apu aesthetic conventions and design philosophy you pin down.

First look for the storytelling poses/extremes. They are usually timed where you see a shift in the movement direction or the end/beginning of an action.

Then you look for the key frames, they are like guideposts and help you work out the spacing.

As for breakdowns and inbetweens, try to do a timing chart and observe whether you are dealing with even changes, then your inbetweens will be spaced in the halfway points or there is acceleration or deceleration.

You will usually find that most movement Starr’s slow, accelerates then winds down again as it settles down.

Richard Williams explains it much more clearly in his book with examples tho

never said it had poor animation, just summarizing the main difference I've seen between anime-animation and cartoon-animation

I'm hardly an expert on either cartoons or anime, but I've noticed that anime focuses on making the animation match the detail while cartoons tend to bend the detail to the animation, if that makes sense

I've seen cartoons move stiff as a board, anime move smoother than butter. I've seen anime with detail on the level of south park and cartoons that look like masterpieces in motion

the ultimate advice I can offer is to just animate what you want, decide on how much time you wanna put in vs how much detail you'll put in, and get it done, but I figure that advise is useless to the kind of person who spends their time on 4chan

One scene in evanglion 3.0+1.0 was. It isn't impossible for more though like /a/ will tell you, the biggest saving/expense that digital has is the lack of cel painters and replacing them with the fill bucket.
Realistically the act of painting could be automated with modern printer tech just like xerox outlines were in the 60's. All it would take is a hotshot director to reintroduce it just like film and all the directors that subsidise that.

This, people often mistake a lot of flashing lights, explosions and debris effects for good animation. I feel like a lot of modern fights lack choreography, timing and weight and attempt to make up for it with overuse of filters and after effects.

This fight right here is an prime example. Not to say the animation it's is bad per say, but the over-polishing and compositing feels like it makes up for the more cookie cutter action.

Digital was a mistake for anime, the animators rely on digital effects and shaky cam to hide poor animation in fight scenes, instead of top quality animation and choreography to make it "impressive looking."
With limited tools they were forced to make genuinely impressive animation that would even look good as just gesture drawings https://youtu.be/eS1q-vjXDIY?t=98

>> No.6196080

>>6195968
To elaborate I don't think that's all there is to it, dynamic framerates is another big thing in good Japanese animation you don't see much in the west, with a mixture of 1s/2s/3s in a scene and the foreground/middleground/background and scene elements all being at different framerates simultaneously, for example with the patlabor webm you have the gunshots on 1s the police cars on a mixture of 1s/2s the road on 3s and the explosions/smoke 1s/2s/3s all at the same time. It gives it a very smooth and dynamic look with multiple different things going at multiple different perceived speeds that you don't see much in western animation. The animators are really good at manipulating the illusion of movement.

Also anime focuses a lot more on cinematography and dynamic shots because it's heavily inspired by classic cinema, for example in the flipnote touhou gifs itt that have lots of perspective changes with no warping of the scene objects or characters. Unlike western animation that has its inspiration from stage shows and old slapstick comedy like Charlie Chaplin, so it feels a lot more flat and stageplay like and utilises a lot of distortion in its animation since it played into the comedy factor of old cartoons, but even serious, more "cinematic" western animation has more of the standard exaggerated animation than anime does.

While more detail/less animation is a general trend in anime it isn't *the* thing that makes anime look like anime, you can totally have less detail/more animation and look like anime if you understand *how* they animate differently to the west, particularly these above points (dynamic framerates generally less xaggerated animation, general consistency and cinematography/dynamic shots) so saying "more detail less animation" can result in your animation looking like those faux western 'anime' that everyone dislikes.

I guess there's a lot of flashing lights and effects in that example, but here's a sample of a fight scene from the same show that I think does choreography, timing and weight quite well, with little use of post processing

https://youtu.be/Ar7fHWRMNoE?t=125

The problem is, I can KIND of wrap my head around how you would start building up to great animated choreography like the example above, but I don't know how to even BEGIN thinking about the effects animation done here >>6194977

>> No.6196244

>>6196208
it's an ok fight with ok choreography but there's a few unnecessary cuts, it's too busy, at a lot of points and the perspective is off on a lot of those drawings, they're poorly drawn in general. The scene composition is also pretty poor and confusing at points.
Overall a 6/10, compare it with the a-ko scene where the perspective and drawing is spot on, the weight is perfect, only necessary cuts that easily flow in together, the composition is great and is visually tidy even with a few dutch angles in there.
It's 10/10 eyegasm stuff though to be fair.

>> No.6196439

>>6196244
I respect the analysis, I definitely like some of the fast cuts and angles because I think it adds to the disorientation the character is feeling, but I can see why that wouldn't be a preference for some people.

That a-ko scene is really good too... I do think some anime uses the constant moving camera to obscure perspective mistakes, animating a fight scene without constant jumps and camera moves is harder to make look good like that. The only letdown in the a-ko scene is how obvious the held frames are at some points

Cowboy bebop will always be king for me (but everybody says that) https://youtu.be/Yf48R459HSk?t=62

>> No.6196504

>>6196439
>I think it adds to the disorientation the character is feeling
I considered that yes, but 2:18 is beyond disorientation, the villain is running fat towards the hero, then it cuts to a close up of the hero using telekinesis then back to the previous shot where the villain is in the exact same spot he was the last time you seen his, getting smashed with stuff, as if he completely froze in time during the previous cut and then the floor files up and it isn't obvious who did it until you see the hero in the villain's grasp again. I think that sequence takes a lot of wind out of the fight.
