symbol drawing is just drawing the lines around shit that has no lines. for example your eye symbol drawing would have you draing a essentially an oval 2 circles and a few lines around it, not symbol drawing would have you block in the area with value... here

I looked more at the self portraits, because that's where symbols are the clearest to see, but they didn't have a good non symbol example, just showing why symbol drawing is such a frustrating concept, even when you no longer symbol draw, shit still looks like symbol when you suck...


if I had to define it, it would be best to bring up anime/manga/cartoons. everything typically looks ok because everything is placed where it is by people who largely, if pressed, know what they are doing for non symbol drawing, but none of what they make is really more than symbols, there are exceptions to this, but they are very rare.

non symbol would try to define form not by symbols but by values, there would probably still be a contour line of some sort but not everything would be defined by lines, more defined by a separation of values.

I'm just going to add this, symbol drawing is one of those things you understand when you understand it and no amount of someone trying to show you or tell you what it is will get through, its like learning gesture drawing from vilppu, I think he is fucking horrible at teaching it unless you already understand what it is, a number of years ago proko put out a gesture video that I thought went over the concept in a definition context FAR better than anyone else, but he couldn't teach you to draw a gesture for shit, but combine prokos teaching with vilppu's 'feel the form' shit, and you get it.

I think for symbol drawing, vs non symbol you need to see someone draw without symbols, get the video "Drawing from the Model with Jeffrey Watts" his warm up section in there should probably show you the difference between symbol drawing and non symbol better than anyone could explain it.
