6136372 No.6136372 [Reply] [Original]

Haven’t been on /ic/ for many many years. I’ve just come back to see what people are thinking about the rise of AI art as I’ve noticed a lot more of it on DeviantArt. Is the general mood panic, apathy, anger? I’ve honestly been a bit annoyed at the amount of people on DA posting heavily monetised AI art without disclosing it’s made by AI. Anyway I just wanted to know what people are thinking.

I think AI will really shake up the industry but probably not as fast as some people think. A lot of people seem to have this idea that it's actually AI and "it's going to learn to do EVERYTHING in no time at all" and "Holodecks in 10 years!!!!!" I'm not a techbro, but from my limited reading it's basically just making the most out of current technology rather than relying on some god code that invented sentience.

AI can be scary but it's not worth getting worked up for another "wow there's a breakthrough in tech, that means there's gonna be another one right around the corner, right?" Yeah, and we're still not on mars or fully automating our vehicles yet.

Yeah, this tech isn't as new as people think it is. The marketing behind letting people see their shitty alpha program and their, admittedly impressive, "second" program has done wonders in making people think this technology hasn't existed before.

All the anxiety is worrying about the tech progressing TOO FAST, and that's understandable, but people need to be realistic about the growth of technology, especially these days. God damn, computer RAM is still a meme.

The big commercial ones have filters that prevent them from generating coomer shit. as it stands now, you can't get specifically what you want out of ai art, and when you get somewhat close, it still needs an artist to finishing touch it.

what should scare people is if nvidia's landscape shit ever get to the point you can block in what you want and add text for it to fill in the blank. I could see that taking jobs.

but realistically, ai can only iterate off what already exists, and while it can be impressive, realistically, when you arent dicking around with it or heavily in the concept phase, ai is useless, and likely won't get better fast enough.

the scary part of ai is programing ai where we have no fucking clue what its doing but its working.

you also have ai that can cull though data to find correlation, we have no fucking clue why they can but just random bones in a human body they can tell what race the person is at a 99% accuracy.

shit like that is concerning.

They state that it's ai generated art in their Bio, Shit even their subscription description calls it AI art. Are you implying this artist is disingenuous or that other artists are? There will be AI artists, people who are good at setting parameters and descriptors to get certain images generated. It's like being good with boolean functions on Google or something. I see nothing wrong with the artist you're talking about. If anything, I think they've embraced the new medium that so many people are being little bitches about.

While Dall-E is impressive and all I think we're at least 10 years away from the point where professional artists would actually start to be displaced by AI. Until then it remains a novelty and maybe sometimes useful tool. If you're an established professional now, I don't think you have much to worry about, especially if you're in studio, as your job is likely more complex and technical than just "gib illustration, receive money". Freelancers would be more likely to be replaced.
If, however, you're a beginner who's aspiring to become pro, it might be a good idea to start thinking of a plan B simply because 10 years is just about the time it takes someone to get from zero to pro level. However, to be square, even without AI I'd advice you to have a plan B as "become a professional artist" was never exactly something that worked out for everyone.

Still pretty sad seeing a lot of them getting fooled, especially if it inspires them to pick up the pen, only months later to discover it was just someone typing strands of code into a program all along. Shits going to crush them.

You DON'T make art to make pretty pictures, this concept has been dead since the invention of the camera, you make art to explain your thoughts, to tell a story, to inspire deep emotions inside the soul, fuck, even coomers actually got the art thing, if you make a picture just for the sake of making a pretty picture, you are already lost, AI is just the final nail.

As much as people shit on coomers here, and there's plenty to shit on, this is something they always forget. The coom artists know their art is nothing but a vessel to convey ideas. Some coom artists are quite good at their craft, but it's circumstantial. They're good draftsmen because it enables them to convey their feelings/ideas better.

Miura is a great artist but there's nothing more souless than thinking that's all his legacy comes down to. Art has always been a meme. It's always been about storytelling, even if it comes down to pure base sex.

For all the seething envy people hold towards coom artists, they tend to forget that "cute" art and the sort are also really popular as well. Or relatable art. Hell, SFW artists that dive into any niche that inspires feel-nice emotions in people tend to do well on twitter from my experience.
This artist, khyleri, has exploded in popularity from a mish-mash of content ranging from slightly pinup-y to comedic art.

I agree that’s true but a lot of this is invented by the viewer not the artist. For example an ai might pair 2 random things which the viewer connects as a story. The viewer supplies the soul.

I disagree about this being related to the invention of the camera. The difference here is that it can capture the beautiful human brush strokes. Copy them from real people sure but nonetheless the viewer can’t tell. There’s more to art than the idea.

There were other things I was going to say but I’m too tired to think them through.
