This thread is dedicated to master studies, where you copy artwork you admire as a form of study. They are the quickest way to improve and learn about any fundamental you are having problems with. If you need to work on your hands, copy hands from other artists, and if you're having trouble with rendering, make careful studies of paintings with lighting you admire. Studies can be quick or long. You can even copy anatomy books like Bridgman, Morpho, and Hogarth. The type of studies you want to do depend on your personal goals and the types of problems you are grappling with.

Artists of all levels are welcome. Critiques and redlines are encouraged.

When I got into the game of "go" (a board game from ancient China) the best book that was recommended to me was Toshiro Kageyama's "Lessons in the fundamentals of Go", written in the 20th century by a 7dan professional Go player.

In the preface, he says to you that if you are a new player who has not even played a single game of go, the best thing to do was to put down the book at once and to go play a hundred games of go in the nearest go salon, thinking only of protecting your own stones or killing your opponent's stones. In other words, newbies who did not have enough experience literally could not comprehend his instructions and it would be a waste of time to read that book, despite his book being very good.

It's like that old Japanese saying: the sharpest sword has been tempered in a hundred battles. I don't know how much that Krenz video will help you, to be honest. You might find a few good tips but don't expect much, because you might just be too inexperienced to get anything out of it. There's a danger to be too swamped in theory, so I think one option for you is to get a huge collection of drawings or images you like and to make freehand copies them for a couple months. Only then, go back to the Loomis books or the Vilppu books or the Krenz lectures, the books everyone on /ic/ recommends. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is practice

anyways, just food for thought

The ateliers of today (Florence Academy of Arts, etc) do 1 year of solid drawing, 1 year of drawing + painting, 1 year of just painting. You have to understand why people advise to learn to draw before painting: dry medias are generally easier to control, cost little, force to focus on values (monochromes).

They are thus advised because they are an efficient way to develop fundamentals of observation-based subjects (still life, copies) : proportions, values, composition.

Beg here. I did a study of an drawing an anon posted in the prior thread. I really struggled with the detail of the face, when the head is small on a full figure drawing I can't seem to get the details down right like I would in a drawing of just a head (hence why the head is too big, I redrew it at least four times). Does anyone have any advice for drawing facial details on smaller heads? Other master drawings to study that can let me practise full figures with small heads would be appreciated too.

for learning to draw figures I think copying Bridgman, or Morpho is your best bet. Some of those academic drawings are so refined and sophisticated it's hard for a beginner to see the anatomy and underlying structure in their drawings. Once you got the basic head construction down, you also have to study each feature individually, and only for that do I think going to your favorite artists is the right step. (all this is just my opinion of course.) Don't worry about the dilemma of drawing big heads or small heads just yet, draw big and the small heads will be really easy

Loomis is good, but head drawing is such a difficult subject that when people work their way through Loomis, and they find that they still can't draw heads, they hate on him, when it's really the subject's difficulty. What I recommend you do is to get Bridgman, Morpho, Hogarth (yes, even him), and Loomis, and copy through their head sections over and over again, and to regularly make studies from photo reference or master drawings/paintings, over the next year or so. That was how I learned, along with drawing lots of heads when I made my own comics/animations

Good work, you got the composition and the drawing working. Good choice of study material, too.
However, your colors are off - your values seem to be very compressed towards the lower end of the range in comparison. Sometimes you overstate the darks - for example in the shaded part of the trees near the shore. Your light hues appear shifted more towards reds than in the Levitan - compare his clouds and sky near horizon with yours. The subtlety in the gradation in the faraway treeline is also mostly gone. You also seem to skimp out on paint, particularly near the shoreline - this causes the canvas texture to show through.

i personally start with gesture, into simple forms, into detail, etc. That doesn't mean to not be accurate either, I think accuracy is paramount in master studies. The point in doing the drawing in multiple layers is to do the drawing over again at multiple levels of abstraction

Dave Rapoza said to just study for 1-2 hours a day and then work on your art after that, and I think that's a good balance. Often I'll have no idea what to study if I never make my own art, and I'll just copy aimlessly, but when I start drawing my comics and I start to struggle wtih clothing, I'll know to study clothes for 1-2 hours the next day. It's a very focused and streamlined way to improve.

As a beginner though, it's worth sinking many hours into honing your figure skills, though, even if you think you're good at it.

nice attempts, i hope you try to follow through with the whole book too. I drew over this one, if you don't mind. The two problems I isolated was about getting the right tilts of the masses of the torso, and about drawing each solid mass of the torso (head, ribs, pelvis) as more solid blocks. When you draw a form, you need to pay attention to the symmetry of the form and make sure nothing is distorted. Look at the parallel lines I drew over Bridgman's hips, and the same parallel lines over yours. The problem can be resolved by sketching in basic forms first, before drawing the details on top. hope my sketches help

>> No.6161185

>>6161162
I see your point about the symmetry, very useful, thanks! Don't mind your drawing over at all, much appreciated in fact.
I started the book from the beginning last week, putting in about 4 daily hours and yeah, I plan to keep on going with it til the end. I'll keep you guys posted!

>> No.6161245

>>6161185
Keep going. Other anon advise regarding symmetry is of value; you can augment it for instance on >>6161121 by trying to understand how a rib cage would fit in there: the ribcage would be distorted, asymmetrical.

There are other issues, but nothing a few hundreds drawings won't solve! If you can push through, your vision will progressively develop, and you'll be able to become more precise

the brush you're using doesn't work for copying that drawing correctly. I'd use something without opacity, hell even the pencil tool would be many many times better.

You've also got to measure more properly, start the drawing more zoomed out and block in the big shapes more simplified before you move in. Look at it more like a puzzle of simple big shapes when you start.

For the hatching, notice how her hatching functions as a transition between patches of pure dark and patches of light. First start inking the dark patches. See for example the triangular ink shape below the man's right hand. Then once you got that you add the hatching, making the transition as pleasing as possible.

Start over anon, and do a better job, put in two times as much effort and keep the stuff I said in mind. If you really do so, you'll improve significantly.

that looks great! glad you like the brushes.

just be careful with the "godpencil" it can be really overpowering and the harsh texture can dominate the subtler tones, used strategically though its a great brush, also really great for painting/rendering with texture.

also godpencilsoft is amazing for feeling out form, i generally start with that and then build from there.

1. try drawing bigger
2. for the details (fingers, heads) just block them with big shapes, and eventually refine them later, if you have time.

Yup, A4 is too small; A3 perhaps passable. The thing is, if you make a 2mm mistake on a A4 drawing, that'll be visually consequent, and it's easy to make a 2mm mistake.

But on a larger sheet, 2mm becomes less important. Drawing on large sheet has been/is advised in some academies for beginners (just look at videos of Russian academies, with their gigantic cast heads). It's however less suitable for finicky rendering (eg. modern use of graphite).

It's a bit counter-intuitive: we think big sheets => harder, but that's not that simple!

>> No.6191189

>>6191100
I second this. I only have A4 available and it made it impossible to use tools like Pierre Noire and other charcoals to anything that demands details and refinment. Best I could do is drapery studies with those, or certain poses like back poses which are more forgiving and don't include a face.

On A4 graphite is the way to go, though I've had some success with carbon pencils too.

Hey Bridgman bro, are you copying every single page, every drawing? I'm trying to do that as well but sometimes I see drawings so loose and unstructured that it's hard to even make sense of them, let alone make an accurate copy.

>> No.6191335

Yes. Rifle through a couple pages and see if there's a simplified version a little later, sometimes they're kind of "out of order" IMO, where they show you the finished one first and then how it's constructed.
When in doubt, use Michael Hampton's process he outlines in Figure Drawing: Design and Invention. Proportion, tilt, perspective. CSI lines.
