The pose could be more dynamic (referring to the standing one, the sitting one is great), and adding some more detail to her mouth. Her expression is pretty vague.

I think most of her parts are pretty good, they're just arranged in a boring manner. But again, I really like the sitting pose. Capitalize on that.

decide on a general audience (anime style? disney style? realistic? clean twitch stickers? messy paintings?)
make art that fits that audience
blast it on instagram/artstation/twitter
offer commissions
before you open up commissions make sure you've done a few (5-6) pieces that you would consider commission-worthy. don't just upload 30 5 min sketches and then offer to sell full painted portraits with proper lighting. take your time and make something as if you were creating it for a buyer. once you offer commissions continue posting stuff, from finished work to wips and whatever. expect things to be slow at first but keep at it. helps if you're on twitter and retweet work that you like and is similar so your style since that person may also like your work and share it, getting more eyes on your stuff. gl.

The painting study which I posted I got extremely lucky on: I've made many-a-study-and-painting since then, but they were so embarrassingly bad that I did not save them. Of course, consistency is not easy to achieve for everyone and I have just semi-recently started painting, but I am not as good as it as it may seem from that one study.
Regardless, I will do more painting. It still seems that I can achieve better results with it than my chicken scratch sketches.

I think his face just needs a bit more volume to it. Like his...I don't know what they're called, the :3 bit, needs to be a little rounder. His chin, too. As far as the perspective I think you're going for here, his right arm would be obscured by his torso.

I tried to show what I mean here. Hopefully you can see what I mean by adding more volume. Maybe that's not exactly the look you were going for, but maybe it will help. Sorry if the redline is out of line.

The hands are quite good though, and you clearly have a good respect for big, strong arms.

How do you make a good OC that isn't simple and plan, but also not overly flashy?

i want something that's good and has enough to stand on it's own without being just any other ______ (rabbit, mouse, etc.) but ALSO, isn't seen as overdone.

Give it unique clothing, fur patterns, that kind of thing. Maybe even give it a small hair highlight or some kind of bodily quirk that doesn't scream obnoxious.
You can also lean more into the "loud" side of character design with things like unique fur colours and chimeric quirks, so long as you don't completely swamp the character with said quirks.

today's progress. switched to grayscale because I was having to go back over too many areas where dealing with bounce light and main light, so there were too many colors to keep track of

still thinking about making the ears and eye fur just a tad bit darker to separate values a little more. thinking it might be easier to color in photoshop. But my next step is just to start on the swimsuit now
