IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

would anyone cared if I copied real life photos? Not like stock photos but actual serious photography but my own style added to it? I'm trying to go for a magical realism style and I feel tapped out of ideas for interesting composition. You're supposed to have references anyway right? It wouldn't be considered plaigerism would it? It's just a photo.

Not bad. Jokes aside, if you want to learn shading, get your head around theory first.
Like ''How to render'' from Scott Robertson is all you need for basics, reminder that you need to have strong
understanding of perspective first, otherwise you will be confused. There are less technicall and also viable sources tho.
I just found this book groundbreaking in my career.
Also if you want to practice shading you should look for better refs, like pic rel.

"core shadow" is a retarded way of referring to the fact that the farthest edge of a 3d form from the light source is often lighter rather than darker than the middle ("core") part of the shadow, because it received the most bounced light from the light source hitting things behind the object. It's not so much that there's a core shadow as that there's an indirect highlight or bounce lighting.

before you seethe and type a wall of text explaining why I'm never gonna make it - I don't want to make it. Drawing isn't even close to my passion. In fact, I hate every second of it. I'm more into music and writing.

the thing is, I have stories in my head I want to tell with visuals, even if it's just for myself. I don't want my visuals to look like shit, but I don't care about understanding the fundamentals or being able to make stuff look good without cheating and software. Eyes and mouths are half symbol-drawn. I know you probably think they're not because you're trying to copy the shape but you're not entirely successful at that and certain parts of the process (eg sizing the pupil) you fail to follow the reference. For example you missed the eye highlights and on the top right the pupil thing is very obvious because her pupil is about 1/2 the diameter of her iris and almost big enough to meet her eyelid but in your drawing the pupil is about 1/3 the diameter of her iris (which is also slightly smaller relative to her eye than in the ref), likely because part of the pupil on both the top and bottom is obscured by a highlight, and you drew the pupil rounded but based on the visible height of the pupil. The mouths are worse, for the perspective you filled in how you thought they should be instead of what you saw on the top left and for the other three you made the outer lobes of the top lip more concave and the top lip thicker relative to the bottom lip consistently (except the bottom-right, where the lobes were already concave, but you still gave her a fatter top lip). It's not so extreme that it makes them look ugly but you made the top lips the same thickness as the bottom lips when actually they're a bit thinner (as top lips generally are on attractive faces).

Also get some copy paper or something, ruled paper does nobody any favours even if you think it's helping you with measurements or something. And it's a super nitpick but you gave top left a bump on her cheek when in the ref that's actually just a bit of negative space in her hair; since both her skin and that part of the wall are close to white you visually parsed it as part of her face I think.

I think i should focus more on the construction of the eyes and mouth as they seem most inaccurate, eyes i have done some before but the mouth pretty much never. I've mostly focused on nose construction as i found them very difficult (probably because it is not as easy to symbol draw the nose).

You can block values with even bigger shapes, don't jump into detail too early like on the hair. Also avoid using whites or you'll corner yourself into that bright values, knock it down the value you're using for your midtones (and squint, you'll see there are more midtones than in your study), save those bright values for the brightest brights.
Last, if you're going for accuracy, don't rush too much, it's fine to have general shapes that aren't too specific, you can focus on that later (and you can smudge for softer edges, but first block in the main values), as long as your values are there, thing will fall into place, big to small is a simple yet effective rule to follow.

What different people say constitutes fundamentals varies wildly, you'll find if you actually research it instead of listening to what some random anon or the sticky told you or something. It's the sort of thing where there's a nebulous consensus, like if someone says "value is a fundamental" other people will be like "yeah sounds about right." I don't consider anatomy a fundamental, and I don't think that's a particularly hot take either (I think my only take that would be considered hot about fundamentals is that perspective is not a fundamental, but I have a few logical reasons to defend that statement- It is not useful for all drawn or painted visual art applications (logo designs being the argumentum ad absurdum where it is almost strictly a bad thing to have, but you don't even have to go that far; consider beautiful "flat" art like that found on most Tarot card designs, for example, or the works of artists like Sidney Sime or Hokusai), it was absent from even most high art until a few centuries ago and even in modern applications it is very rarely "correct," as we tend to strongly prefer two- or three-point perspective to a photorealistic "fisheye" flattening of our 3-dimensional perception onto the viewing plane of the artwork).

That said, anything that is not a fundamental IS style, including anatomy, and yes, study style guides that follow the style you want to pursue (while being aware that you can probably learn more quickly and comprehensively by going outside of your comfort zone often). Just don't fall for the trap of making the excuse that bad anatomy is just your style if your style is bad.

Oh no, I won't be making it an excuse, I was just posing whether or not exploring different explanations and/or expressions of stylistic choice is needed for comprehensive understanding, or that you should stick to stuff that interests you stylistically. Of course, this is high level stuff far beyond my /beg/ level, but I find it helps to kinda plan which form of construction I want to take on at some point.

Wasn't saying you were, just putting it out there because otherwise what I said would sound like it was supporting that mindset that "bad anatomy is okay because it's a style choice." Over the years you really get tired of seeing people say that about their asymmetrical bodies and hands that look like three-year-old scribbled them.

Completely non-meme answer. Regardless of how good your 3D software is or how the models is, your traced work will look like shit unless you learned and practiced the fundamentals, line weight and control, foreshortening, perspective, anatomy, etc. If you copy the model 1 for 1 it will always look 'off' because the 3d model depicts subtle texture/muscle details that you can't just depict with a line.

There is no cheating, sorry to break it to you. If you hate drawing, you won't be able to do it unless you're autistic as fuck and force yourself. If it was as easy as tracing 3D models, everyone would do it. Mangaka and other artists do it because they actually have the technique to trace something and make it look good.
Better pray AI tech gets good/available for use in the next 5 years or so.

I'm not an artist first and I don't want to make derivative games so I don't have one. As an artist I've admired Mucha since I was a kid, but I'm in no way unique in that regard, and that kind of art isn't particularly useful for game development even if it is soothing to the soul.

>>6124185
I'd recommend against crosshatching, it's pretty difficult to pull of with an appealing result, if you want to go darker with hatching, layer more lines on top of it in the same direction or only slightly offset.

As for your shading, everything has pretty much the same value except the area around the eyes.
But if you look at the ref areas such as the upper lip, shadow under the nose and on the side of the nose, are significantly darker.
Get some softer pencils for darker areas, or if you're using an HB pencil try to limit yourself to 3 uniform values by controlling the pressure and trying to figure out where to use them appropriately,
For example, leave the white of the paper for the normal skin tone, light pressure for the mid tones, medium pressure for the shadow shapes and high pressure for the darker areas around the eye and shadow areas on the hair.

Sometimes I get the sense that I just learned a few tricks that create some appeal while the fundamental drawing is actually pretty mediocre.

This may be my personal taste, but I think overly small anatomy can hurt your piece.

Like, the uber small nose and mouth make the jaw, which is EXTREMELY small, look too big.

The gesture was good enough for now.

Some anons say you should just master gesture because it's super important, but I don't agree. I think you should attempt to color your works because it has a high skill cap.

I know there's a lot of "successful," twitter artists than shade with like, two brushes and two colors, but let's just say you've more potential than that.

>high mouths CAN be cute depending on how they're executed but can also make the chin look huge and weird

I also agree with other guy that the super tiny mouth and nose thing doesn't look great most of the time but that doesn't mean it's verboten or anything.

Painting/rendering is genuinely a lot easier to learn than drawing and while yeah it has a high skillcap I would say drawing probably also has a higher skillcap. What's daunting about rendering is 1: it can look really good easily and you assume things that look good take a lot of work/skill and 2: if you're learning incorrectly it feels incoherent and impossible (especially in digital media, where the difference between using your tools effectively and ineffectively is much broader than with traditional media). It's also pretty bad to learn rendering before you have a solid grasp on drawing or at least form.

well I guess I'll have to learn to like it. I haven't tried to draw seriously since I was a teen so maybe I've changed, though I seriously doubt it.

can I learn all that shit about perspective, anatomy, etc. with just an iPad Air, an Apple Pencil and some app like Procreate? or do I also need to waste money on artist gear? I feel like the digital approach might make me hate it much less, since there's undo and stuff like that

also how many hours a day are good enough? taking into consideration the fact that I work 9-5 and also need to make time for music and vidya. Is 1 hour a day enough?

You should just begin painting first with whatever you know. It’s okay if it looks retarded. Do a few of them then go through a course to improve your painting process rather than going through it as a blank piece of paper. You won’t know what concept that is being taught is more important to you unless you’ve actually paint something. Think about the pros who started drawing since they were a child. Would a child think to himself that he needs to read a loomis book first to be good at figure drawing? No they just fucking draw even if it looks like shit for years until they grow up and want to get serious.

TLDR just draw/paint even if it looks like shit for a while then go take courses to see how you can do better than what you’re doing now

Hmmmm…I’m glad I did the graphic design course. I learned a lot of after effects for animation and got to learn important fundamentals for typography. I got a fair bit of work through contacts because of the course. I basically taught myself to draw though, books and videos, studies etc. there was an illustration component in the course but it was minimal.
The masters I’m doing in illustration is atrocious. There’s more essays than drawing amd the essays are on things utterly unrelated to illustration: decolonisation, Anthropocene, Gaia etc. it’s all lefty bullshit shoe horned in where it doesn’t belong. My drawing has actually got worse this year because I don’t have time to actually draw…on a masters course for illustration. Go figure

Chin angles towards cameras

Women have larger eyewells than men

Check fet starts below eyes ends around mouth

Jaw itself is okay. Girls have the chin then a straight jaw at 30 degrees or so. If from the side, the neck flesh would be parallel to the deck but the jaw itself slightly angled.

Right eye is simply too big as it is overlapping where the cheeks would be.

You can draw moeblob with human anatomy. Check out league splash art.

Draw traps bigger neck

draw more of the nose. its placement is important and its shape is important. Your art will look ugly for a while but that's fine. You want to focus on proper nose anatomy and placement and then you can go back to ultra minimalist noses when you know how to draw them properly.

Good job on the mouth placement. It's slight too far to her left but I can see you tried to forshorten.

You almost did great on the jaw. We want chin with minor horizontal linework > flat jaw > direct vertical under the ear. Your jaw extended past the ear here when it should not have. IF IT LOOKS WIERD THEN DONT BE AFRAID TO JUST DRAW THE NECK THERE. So youd define the jaw with line/shadow and then you can just draw the neck flesh under it

IMPORTANT: You drew the head placed directly over the neck. If we look at pic related, you will notice the head extends out. So most of the jaw is hovering over thin air and again, if it looks wierd, don't be afraid to just properly define the jaw of the skull and then use neck flesh to fill in whats missing.

The biggest issue here is face length defined by the cheek fat distribution, and the eye placement doesn't help.

Your eyes aren't parallel. They would be parallel at this face angle, but don't worry about that too much.

Try to draw the distance between eyes and chin longer, making the cheek fat distribution more subtle.

Her left eye would also be closer to her nose. Regardless of face angle distance from the nose never changes.

Specifically learn how to draw male eyewells vs female eyewells. What I mean is space after the cheek ends and before the brow. This is important and you will notice how much easier it makes to draw skulls.

You kind of invented the values in places, like the whole cheek to the right of the nose. Look at the shapes, there's three distinct values on the cheek. Remember to start with the big, general blocks and go back to fill in the details between. Also checked.

Cute, love the lighting!

I don't see why you have an eyewell that's 2x the size of the cheek. You also seem to be afraid of bridge of the nose. I know it's stylized, I think you can improve it. Don't be afraid to draw the line from the knucles leading back to the wrist and some more detail in the hand. Veins etc., small things that will separate you from mediocre artists.

I think you could do more with that upper eyelid. IT's a really fat line and it's clearly lazilly parallel to the eye.

Also if you are gonna stick with manga style, I think you guys need a lot more line confidence than normal. Like that arm, from that angle you always show the bone separate from the extensors. There's no reason not to because its always a visible bend.

I've been really struggling with perspective for the past year.

I still don't really know how to accurately do warped shapes like this, organic forms, rotations and I would like to find more material on how to do that.

I can definitely just bullshit it like how Drawabox teaches, but it doesn't seem good enough. I need something more technical but not cripplingly technical like Scott Robertson.

I feel the same. Every time I go out of my comfort zone, I realize I'm probably not ready yet and don't have the basic shit down.

But getting smooth curves with lots of little organic details is pretty difficult, so all I can really think of is to study other artwork to understand how they represent this stuff and more importantly to get the muscle memory and line confidence down. Just basic practice of a line going from thick to thin back to thick again, even.

At the edge of an object like a jacket or whatever, you don't want to think of it as abruptly ending like it's flat. If you think about gesture in a more 3d sense with all of the wrapping and twisting and overlapping, over and under, you'll be able to better imagine all of the subtle little organic details at the contour and why they're there to begin with. Ok I've give that a try. I was just hoping there might be some sort of rule on how to apply curves to 3d space and vanishing points and all that.
The most I can think of doing is using a lot of ellipses, boxing in the general space and kind of "sculpt" the shape from there based on shared vanishing points.

You'd choose between manga/painting. If manga/cartoons then you need a lot of focus into linework because 20 panels a week is too much to paint without linework.

If you just want to do painting then you can delay linework practice for other things. You can start rendering now, but keep in mind that gesture itself has a higher skill ceiling than rendering so you'd want to keep grinding it.

Either way daily grind is more important than anything specific.

Oh I don't do that at all. I think you should just set up your horizon line to make sure that certain objects are not blatently forshortened wrong and then do your best guess. Mostly because the big ticket items like faces will have less than 10% reduction from most camera angles.

I think you could create cylinders in perspective for the muscle groups and do construction out of that but that adds a casual 10 hours to just your construction, which is just super inefficient training.
