looks mediocre.which all things considered is really good for a first animation.
fix your perspective,
work on timing (buildup, climax, and resolution which in this instance would be the mimic being about to open its mouth, the opening of its mouth, and finally the mimic closing its mouth)
fix the reflection on the gold
i spent a little bit of time editing a little mockup edit your gif to try and show you what i mean because i can't articulate my thoughts very well.

Hard to tell, what are you looking for? If you want more variety I'd push the palette a little bit, either more values or playing a bit with hues (like in the shadows, add some cool for contrast to the lights), doing a couple of iterations to see if you find another palette could be an option, but overall looks pretty good.

This is the basic idea.
Count how many real pixels fit on one the scale up pixels, and then divide accordingly.
common numbers are:
3px divide 33.33%
4px divide 25% (vid rel)
5px divide 20%
If the picture is too big, first do 50% and then count.

Commissions, game assets, merch. Pixel Art is more versatile and loved than we give it credit for.

Merch might come as a surprise; but because of how it can be scaled cleanly without losing quality (hard edges), it's good for it. Just mind the CMYK output.

Not at all, you just need to fine the right place for it. Unfortunately I'm a brainlet at networking, but if you look for places that would want your work for a game or maybe even animations since that use to be a thing for sprite work in the past, I'm sure you'd find something.

>> No.6139993

>>6139929
i only have experience with commissions and i can assure you are not going to make a living out of that, so your best option would be to try to get a job on a studio. But i have no idea how to do it. If you want some spare money my recommendation is to go hard on twitter. That is where most of the audience is, places like spriters resource or pixeljoint are a waste of time, is also a good idea to post your links on game dev communities (discord). There is also places like fiverr but idk.
The amount of money you can make really depends on how appealing is your work, and in general it can take a while to make anything at all.

Thanks for the complement, and criticism, much appreciated!. The reason for the face is because it's trying to fit in the PPG/Z style into what is ultimately a very cramped , Jump Ultimate Stars inspired sprite style. While your approach looks cool too, I'm just trying to say on model to the source. Which again, can be rather challenging with the sprite style I want to go with. But thanks for the feedback, I might have to give it another pass through.

Ok, here is some real advice if you still want some. Overall, I think the biggest problem is the arm being too consistent. The arm should be exaggerated to flex and bulge outward. I also feel the shoulder is slightly too stiff for the movement shown. Finally, and this is my personal recommendation, right at the end when he is about to drop his fist, it should waver a bit to show that he is having a hard time lifting his massive arm.

NP. I know color/hue shifting isn't something everyone uses/likes but in cases like that I think it just makes "living" characters feel more alive to me imo, so just keep that in mind when shading your sprites

What program do you use to sprite in btw? A nice feature to use is a proper Grayscale toggle to make sure your values are correct, which is how I began to learn how to spot inaccuracies myself even in color. I have it in Photoshop, but I'm sure other programs have it as well.

Turning a good drawing into pixel art is not particularly hard, but you need to keep in mind what are the characteristics that make something look like pixel art. Only reducing the resolution is not enough because there are to many colors, you need to do both. To which amount is a matter of taste, but is always better to try to aim for a specific style. Like, " i want this to look like it's from metal slug" or something. And you still need to clean up the sprite after transforming it.
On this one i use 4 colors and made the resolution smaller, and i think it is fair to say that it looks much more like pixel art even without the cleanup.

Most people use photoshop, and there are tutorials on YouTube. But in my opinion there are better tools now SLK_img2pixel is free, and it lets you pick a color pallet which is pretty nice, the only problem is that it crashes a lot and is kinda hard to use. I made this one with Pixelover, is pretty similar to SLK_img2pixel but it does not crash on my system.

Also stay away from the dithering options, is always better to add a color that to use dithering on these programs. The dithering they use is too complex for any human to pull off, so it looks fake.

There seem to be some interest for this, and if it bump the thread i don't mind.

Here are 2 examples, left has 8 colors and is 500 px tall, right is 16 colors and close to 250 px tall. Which one looks better is not really that important. What is significant is which one looks more like pixel art and why. Even tho left is also limiting the resolution and amount of colors, most people would not call it pixel art. Here lies the importance of references, if your work don't look like it belongs on a group that has other drawings made by pixel artist, you need to try again.

On the subject of cleaning drawings and achieving the rendering. I did some clean up on the bottom right to illustrate this. As you can see, i removed some anti aliasing on the circle, and the green pixels on the pants. Still there is a lot to be done, like joining or removing single pixels, fixing some curves, and you can still remove one or two colors here but i'm not really that fond of this drawing to keep working on this.
As it was mentioned before, pixel logic is a book about rendering pixel art, so the recommendations there are going to apply when you are cleaning up your pixel art (i have no idea why some people are trying to push it as a drawing manual, but i digress).

The reason is audience expectation, go to dotpict or spriters resource and look at the art posted there, this is what people expect to see when you use the term pixel art. We are not that different from something like the Anime Study General. They are aiming for a specific aesthetic that looks genuine, and we are too.
That is why i'm giving you pointers for making the drawing look like pixel art, this is the general for pixel art.

Personally i like the left one more, but i would not call it pixel art, and avoid posting on pixel art communities so people don't get pissy.

Hi. I was referred here by /agdg/
I'm wondering if anyone here knows cheats for pixel art making. In particular, I've heard an artist on twitter talk about posterization and other cheats 90s developers used to help mass produce tile assets. Personally speaking, I'm a lone talentless dev with no fucking money and an ideaguy in general so I'm hungry for any way to get my content into game format for less work. I understand, based on what he was saying, that the results aren't really the same as "twoo pixel art" but the stuff he did was very impressive, here's an example of his work.

A couple of post above you can see examples of the kind of look you get, they could work for a title screen, a visual novel or some retro cut scenes.
That picture was not made using that method. Because you need a good drawing to begin with making the pixel art directly is way faster than turning drawing or photos into pixel art, especially for traditional side scrollers, isometric views, or top down games.

I've been trying for 30 minutes to fight twatters gay UI so I can find the tweet but in general I'm not sure you are correct here since almost all of this guys art is top down tileset stuff. I know you probably wont be using it to turn the average photo into a magic tileset but I have to imagine he actually uses it in his process somehow, maybe by using imprecise brushes and cleaning it with it? I have no real idea. In any case this idea isn't impossible for me to get any use out of. In fact if anything my tileset ideas are probably the best case scenario for what this technology can offer, which is why I need to diy anyway, no one else is offering a tileset like what I have in mind. That said It's not like I'm discounting your advice outright either. I'd be more inclined to take it hook line and sinker if you could describe a useful way this guy is using this workflow to help him create stuff like this, even if it's limited in scope. this kind of stuff is almost everything that guy has in his portfolio it wouldn't make sense to shill it so hard if he wasn't using it somehow.

basically he uses some kind of workflow and I guess what I'm trying to say is I want to understand it. I know he also uses practice and skill, and the last comment definitely means he doesn't use unprocessed images, but the style I'm going for would definitely benefit. I may be an ideafaggot but I know at the very least I'm picking a style uniquely suited to my lack of talent.

I guess it works.
First, you need to find a picture of the front of the building, then use SLK_img2pixel/Pixelover for reducing the size and picking a pallet, and lastly you need to draw the rooftop.
Is it faster? maybe? The biggest problem is that it looks inconsistent, so my guess is that most of your time is going to be spent on that.

> How do you approach these animations?
I usually just go frame by frame and just break it down to having good flow and adjust the pixel placement until it looks clean enough in motion. One advice I recommend is just reusing as many parts from each frame as much as you can, as in, the face or the feet, whatever isn't moving as much, reuse those pixels and when you need to adjust, then adjust. It allows me to get the general flow down while the more intricate parts like the legs and arms get more focus as I redraw them in the right positions.

>what do you use for reference and stuff
The general size of the sprite were heavily based around Jump Ultimate Star sprites as those were my preferred size for humanoid sprites when I first began doing these.
The actual pose is inspired from Sakura from Street Fighter. As I felt it was a fitting stance for my character in question.
