this is weird as fuck mate. the fabric looks alright but it's clashing with the rest of the figure because the line color is so much lighter on the fabric than the black line on the figure. needs more contrast or the line on the figure needs to go closer to the flesh tone.

your line work and colors are really cool. are you inspired by the wind waker? the biggest issues are:
>strange white outline
makes it seem like an mspaint fill bucket mistake
>terrible ear placement
self explanatory
>mismatched linework/colors
the clothes on the right just don't work. they look like they belong on a different piece entirely. it needs to be much darker, if not outright black, to fit the rest of the piece coherently.

>> No.6106497

>>6106442
>Windwaker
No.
>White outline
I know, I did the original lineart in ms paint, so instead of a transparent background it's white. Unless you meant to the right of the face. I did that because i thought it looked neat, preserving the outlines of the face. But i guess not.
>Mismatched linework
I know. I wanted to at least change the linework on the body to a flesh tone but again i did this in ms paint so there was no way to just change the lineart color without either 1) Redoing it entirely (I am lazy), 2) Removing the subtle fade on the edges of the lines, making it look jagged, 3) Having a permanent white outline.
I wanted to try something new but it's god to know it looks kind of jarring. Thank you.

yeah, this is what i meant. for what it's worth, it doesn't look bad when you use the white to define strands of hair, but it does just look wrong on the face itself
>i did this in ms paint
a lot of respect for doing this in mspaint. you should try out /i/'s tegaki sometime. it's like that but with layers and a few other tools you might like. or download xp era mspaint which won't have any of those issues you mention

I drew this about one week ago, now this drawing doesn't give me much confidence.
I think I could fix something, but I don't know what. I want to make it more interesting at first glance, maybe if I put some shadows with a color other than orange, like a blue/green, or a background other than a boring white, I don't know.

besides, I think the expression is not so catchy.

Well, those roses are just kind of... there, and that's it. I think you can take it a bit further, like add some stylized vines (or more realistic branches) and leaves (and maybe thorns) to make those flowers look like a part of a complete framing.

I do think that the facial expression is a bit too naughty and out of character, but also I think that it's a matter of preference. Maybe play with proportions a bit? Maybe longer legs will do it for you.

I can't place the exact reason but the lower body just feels off to me and I think that could go a long way in making the pose feel more natural.

Just 2 quick ideas I tried since I don't have too much time.
First is just pushing that back leg up to make it a little more natural and to have both legs sitting on the same plane, since as is her back leg feels like its pushed too far out and to the side making it a sort of cross legged pose, but from your image i feel like she should be sitting "flat"

the other I'm just too lazy to work on the back leg but was going for more legs angled toward the viewer which would involve seeing her shoes and legs from a lower perspective, since that would enable the cross legged pose a little better, rather than having both shoes flat on.

I think its just the back leg i'm not feeling.

Too late for that but I would think better on the composition of the shot. Kinda boring being just the when you think that the "camera" or view are this wide flat shot on when all the characters are moving in all those dynamic and opposite poses, but for now everything feels claustrophobic with three character in a pretty small and "boxed space. I would give a wider shot and views of what is happening so feels more like a character establishing shot and not so zoom in. But all of this is absolute bullshit, so you necessarily needs to listen.

I feel you man. I've had characters and projects I've been working on for over a decade and I still can't finalize costume designs. A part of me wants to give my characters a dynamic, more realistically paced, wardrobe but that requires so much more thinking... And I can't even settle on a one.
The other anon is right that it's a lot easier when you properly take their hobbies and personality into account. Personally I find my strongest designs come from me slapping interesting shapes into a design and then figuring out more about the character as I go along. It can take a long time before a character gets settled into a design in general. They'll probably go through many minute iterations as you design them as a whole, but eventually you may find some stable ground. Even if it isn't the best outfit or later on you want to change it... There isn't really anything stopping you from giving your characters new outfits? Existing narrative or no narrative, any fans would enjoy seeing the character in different styles when you get down to the meat of the content. It's all content.
I lost my train of thought bye

Draw grid planes and note that the closer your light source is to the ground, the more stretched the shadow will be. More or less, this isn't always true, but it's a fine rule of thumb. It's also important to be able to recognize the simple shapes in your character's design so you can more easily translate these shapes into a hand drawn shadow instead of copying your drawing and transforming that copy into a shadow. Their shadow also has a little bit of ambient light to it which is the light that bounces into the shadow. The grid planes are very important though don't forget to practice those to help you keep everything in perspective.

I tried to make a narrative like the other anon suggested.

My painting process is really slow. You guys have any tips? Like that other anon said, the procreate smudge brush isnt the best. My lighting feels off. Like i didnt get the distribution of values right. I used gray scale and gradient maps. Then i sectioned off the layers of color. But its taking me like 8 tries to get the color of anything right. If i wasn’t using gradient maps I’d have to repaint everything. Like the pond princess was gray fish colored, then she was green, then i made her flesh colored, then bright blue, and finally dark skinned. I would have lost all the details 6 times repainting it on a single layer. I dont understand how people are able to choose colors.

Shit i forgot the text blurb
>The princess and her koi companion once ruled over a vast kingdom of aquatic life. But the ruthless humans dammed the river upstream that fed into their lake. The water drained so fast from their kingdom that she was beached on the open lakebed with her giant koi. Covered in mud and pond scum, she drags her companion miles across the barren wasteland looking for what remains of the river. They crawl past the asphyxiated corpses of their fishy friends who were unable to evacuate in time. Finally, as the princess approaches the gnarled shoreline, she slips on the dead fish crowding the riverbank and becomes ensnared by her reins. The princess and her koi gasp for air strangled by the koi’s harness. In a cruel twist of fate, they are both left choking and struggling inches from the water’s edge.

Can you include a version with this text in it? Maybe increase the bottom and leave it a black blank space for text? It'll give people far more context and give people more of a reason to post it around when they understand your intention... Or you could leave it up to interpretation, but I personally enjoy seeing an artist's personal ideas on single illustrations like this. Do you have an interest in the ecosystem and modern expansion? Or did you craft this narrative without much interest in the grander meaning someone may gleam from this narrative? (Human vs Nature)

Good! I'll be looking forward to seeing that. The concept of "something that was nice is ruined" is a fantastic concept to move forward with. I've seen some phenomenal works with this theme in mind and I've seen many many many people grow to find their passions by following along a simple core concept like this for their themes. I think the bottom text black box works well because I felt your narrative has a grim and serious tone to it. So it feels more "serious" in a way. That initial bold text for the title is a smart move too!
I enjoy this edit a lot and I feel it fits big illustrations like this. I think speech bubbles or boxes actually would have hindered the piece. While here's hoping the bump will lewd to more engagement, I do hope it doesn't bum you out if it doesn't. I think this can be a great direction for you to go down for the time being.

heres how to be pantsu ripper.
1. only make shitty fanart for things that are popular with internet subcultures
2. draw with an anti-aliased brush because you are a poor mexican who can only draw on ms paint
3. trace as much as you can, have no actual style, just copy whatever style you're drawing. Drawing lain? make it look like aBe drew it. FLCL? give that bitch bug eyes because you cant fucking draw.
Once you realize that you have a large enough following from only making traced fanart, you start a patreon where you draw fotms and other thirst traps for autistic loners.

How do I cel shade? flat shade? or whatever it's called, I just want my drawing to look like stills from a cartoon or anime.

>> No.6122860

>>6122853
If you don't know how to cel shade and you're painting it means you don't understand the forms that you're painting. I'm assuming by painting you mean rendering out the forms further than cel-shading. The simplest solution and the fastest to your problem, is to just study the cartoons and anime you want to emulate and really pay attention to their values and how shadows are simplified and blocked in. There's a problem if you can't cell shade but can render out an image. It should be the other way around unless you're just trolling.

Flats

Yeah, she's meant to be a bit on the short side. I can ask the commissioner for more details regarding the character(s).

When you do flats do you just very meticulously paint with a lasso and a hard edge brush? I always try to use paintbucket but the aliasing sucks and it always spills out. Also do you keep each colored element on a different layer? How many layers do you work in?

You are taking the "make shapes" too literally. It feels too geometric.

I think there's a lot of things I want to draw that are better suited for a rougher style. What I'm drawing is "staying in the lines" too much and everything just looks cheap and amateurish. I also have zero experience with any kind of texture so everything looks like it's made out of the same material. That part at least helps answer part of my own question I guess.

Mostly I just need to learn different styles because I have exactly 1 style right now and it's not what I want to do.

I don't have a fixed style but I can assure you you can change the way you draw simply by changing your workflow.
>everything is made out of the same material
you need to acquire the /3/ mindset of always trying to think about how you would do each material or study from paintings. What you posted looks cool but I'd recommend using more hard edged brushes.
