1. You need to practice on studying values. Darks and lights. Your reference pic is much brighter than your study. Your value range is also pretty limited. His skin is almost completely just one value and then the only other value is the dark for his hair. So the entire drawing looks muddy and hard to read. From the thumbnail view, just compare how much different the ref pic looks compared to your drawing.

2. The soft brush you use is a beginner trap. I don't if I can find an example of it being used on an ENTIRE piece and it looking good. Soft brushes have their place, but not everywhere and especially not on the edges of your piece. Makes me think I'm not wearing my glasses when looking at yours.

It's important also to not view this study as a waste of time. If you perfectly copied it then maybe that would be a waste, but now you can see there are things you need to work on. Study values, planes of the face and drawing those, and practice painting with a hard brush then blending the values together. All of these things can found on YouTube for sure. Keep it up! And it wasn't a soft brush I used. It was a round brush, this one to be exact:

I use Clip Studio Paint. I will admit however that my knowledge on digital brushes is somewhat limited. I however have found this round brush used to my greatest advantage. It does the best job in rendering for me
