IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I have a question for all the anons who feel like their art is at an almost fluid and professional level. Like you can draw almost anything you want and feel confident that it's decent enough to show people or decent enough for you to feel like you accomplished something by making it. Not through days of reworking it, but with reasonable time investment and well-placed lines.

For those anons, at what point did you feel things click? If you ever even 'felt' it. Was there a point during your gesture drawing, anatomy study, just drawing things over and over, etc where it just clicked and the things you were studying just seemed to fall into place? Either that or at which point do you remember going from "this is really tough" to "wow, I just banged out that figure drawing like it was nothing?" If you can't remember a specific moment, maybe you remember what you were doing and how far you went to get there? Like you read Vilppu's course, read up on some anatomy, did some gesture for a couple of months, etc before you started feeling more confident?

Sorry, I know this is a cursed and confusing bundle of questions. But if you can decipher it, I'd love to hear if you remember when in your art journey it all clicked for you or started making enough sense to feel more confident in your work.

You a straight man, lesbian or bi? Because I think that's at the root of it. You're not looking for men to look right, you're looking for them to look strong, someone you'd want on your side even if they have a face like a foot. Like something you're doing here is outlining the entire nose on head-on shots, which looks fucked up on second from the right on the bottom row, but looks fine on top left because you can tell he's supposed to be a dude so your brain doesn't even care that he has a squidward nose, you just see he looks strong. Alternately I think it's telling that straight women usually draw men who are supposed to be attractive as looking very "feminine."

my tip is study other artists and how they portray the face, womens faces have more abstraction and implied detail compared to a man which will have more defined details and features

good example of this is the way you drew the lips, even if a girl has big puffy lips you dont generally fully draw them but leave a portion of them implied, same with any crease or fold

Soft/hard isn't about general opacity, it's about the edge. Top three are hard, bottom three are soft. The "hard round meme" is using a hard round with low opacity or pressure-sensitive opacity to make gradients you could make in a fraction of the time with a soft round with varying hardness, opacity and size, and changing the edges with erasers. Since it's very difficult to get "right" it leaves behind a lot of apparent brush strokes, making it look more like a traditional oil painting (though there are still some telltale signs that it's digital in most cases, like the opacity ripples around her collar in your pic), which is the legitimate reason to do it (and exactly what happened in this pic, I'm assuming intentionally).

I'm struggling so hard with Scott Robertson. I just don't get the "top view", or what the 60 degree CoV even means or how to create it.
You have this 90 degree angle at the station point, and then you have this arbitrary distance from the circle which represents the cone of vision and the center vanishing point, and he makes no mention of this distance.
I get that the edge of the CoV is at 30, but it doesn't seem to mean anything if you can put the station point at any distance from the CVP and the CoV circle

I might swap to krita later but at the time being i simply dont see a single reason to. My pics will look like ass regardless what app i use.

The keyboard shortcuts are customizeable so it doesnt matter to what i get used to. The UI is as comfy as you customize it in both apps. Selecting brush with all the 15 options is single mouse click in both apps.

When you compare Krita to other software, there are things it does better and things it does worse (but mostly better, if you're only comparing it to other free software), but GIMP, while not the bottom of the barrel (that's MS Paint, obviously), is pretty bad as photoshop clones go.

Used to be chaotic good (but with three, so I guess verging on chaotic evil?) but now that I travel a lot I'm lawful neutral, and the second monitor is my drawing tablet.

>> No.6102844

Are you a pro yet?
Just rotate the canvas for actual drawings. You'll develop isotropic control naturally as a part of the process, but at your level, it's WAY more important to keep drawing enjoyable and avoid burnout than it is to grind out every little mechanical technique up-front.

Still do the accuracy exercises, and focus on mechanics while doing them (and keep stabilization off for them; they're exercises, after all). But when you're drawing, you should be focusing more on just doing what gets results. Use stabilization if you need it, rotate the canvas, etc. Use the tools at your disposal, keep it fun, enjoy yourself, and make something that looks as good as you can make it. Give yourself variety, give yourself drills, give yourself fun, and mix it up. Get your mechanics developed, but don't burn yourself out on them.

You don't need a straight line for most circumstances, but that's not the point of stroke control, which is being able to throw down exactly what strokes you intended to make. How could you possibly expect to make a good piece of art if you can't even draw a stroke the size and shape that you want it?

> these straight line practice methods should be done on the go on a sketchpad away from home
They're best done as a warm-up before actually doing some deliberate drawing. On a sketchpad away from home, I'd skip the warm-ups and just do sketches. Really, why would you run line drills while on the go? Might as well just enjoy yourself while you're out.

Your biggest actual problem is composition rather than perspective. You have everything along the bottom edge of the canvas. I think it's funny that you thought the solution was to move the girl down so her chin would basically be touching the bottom. Your construction/perspective and value are the most noticeably off. Use levels to bring your shadows value closer to your midtones, maybe bring mids back, that should get your values somewhat correct although it takes the process of understand the values away. The The head is more top down 3/4 but you painted the eye like you're facing it dead on. The nose bridge comes in more and the jaw also rests lower in pespective. It looks like unconciously lifted the face to a perspective that you're comfortable with (I'm guilty of this too) focus on the construction and trace the image if you have to so you can recognize how the planes and forms sit in space.

the proportions of the eyes seem off, I think they need to be either less wide, brought closer together, or both. You're inconsistent with your perspective on the forms of the face. The eyes look like they're being viewed straight on, the nose looks like it's being viewed from underneath, and the mouth lacks volume so it's kind of doing this weird in between limbo. I would settle on making everything look like it's being viewed straight, not only because it's easier but it puts emphasis on the viewer. If you want a bored/neutral expression, that'll come across in half closed eyelids and a relaxed brow. Right now her iris is small and her eyes seem wide open, so she looks really intense

You're talking to two different people. I said the perspective wasn't really what was wrong with it. ie
>Your biggest actual problem is composition rather than perspective.
in the post you JUST quoted.
> Are her eyes supposed to be the same level as the sea "top", the horizon?
No. The guy who told you that was talking about the VIEWER'S eyes. He meant the horizon should be the middle of the image. I said that isn't really true, though. People can look up or down, and tend to look down when looking at near subjects. Google "person standing on beach" and look at all the different ways the horizon can relate to both the frame and the subject; there is no hard rule for where the horizon line is.
>So you want me to draw the girl farther away from the camera, showing her whole body?
Also no. You don't have to show her whole body, but the way it is it looks like she's peeking up over the bottom of the frame. After you're done googling people standing on the beach, google image composition, art thumbnailing and art tangents.

Pic is not the only way to fix this and deliberately not perfect or the way I would do it because I would like to encourage you to find your own solutions to help you learn and develop an eye for this kind of thing, but it's an example of a way to have a similar composition without your tangent, value and placement issues being as bad. Top is the composition you have, simplified to hopefully help you see the issues that are actually making it look weird (though you could also literally look at the thumbnail on 4chan) while bottom is a revised version.

not trying to be harsh but have you even attempted to learn any fundamentals? drawing is a process of improving two basic aspects: your physical skill, and your ability to understand. currently, your skill level AND perception levels are low. this is why you're unable to draw well and the reason you don't know why what you're doing isn't working. studying fundamentals not only trains your physical skills but improves you ability to understand what exactly you're doing wrong so you can focus on those problems in specific, meaningful ways

I’m watching the Bridgman Bootcamp working on the assignments but stuck in shape analysis. I don’t understand what’s going on here nor do I understand why the upper arm was left out of whatever this is

Same here. He drew a triangle outside the actual figure? It looks like Vandruff was drawing random triangles that specific triangle threw me off and it seems like nothing connects with each other and had nothing to do with the figure.

May I ask where I went wrong with this one? Haven't improved in years, trying to get better -again-. Where you see white lines through it is where I noticed proportions were too short and free transformed it to fix the lengths.

Currently doing the steve hutson head drawing course. What sticks out the most as something I'm doing wrong? I know overall I'm pretty bad, but just saying what you thinks the biggest problem in how I draw people would be great.

It's really hard for you to get good facial proportions drawing on a sheet/low resolution. For us digital we have zoom and 800 DPI.

im planning on going digital and getting the artist 12 which has an 11.6 inch screen, is a screen like that to small would you say, or does screen size not really matter?

>> No.6104075

>>6104071
Artist 12 is good. Obviously the wacom (or just first world in general) monitor pads are going to be a lot higher quality if you can afford to shovel out the money for them.

Been working on this piece for awhile, figure it's more or less done. Any feedback would be appreciated; the biggest flaw I can see is that I can never seem to draw hair well.

Thank you very much.

The second pair of eyebrows, the thinner ones were supposed to be the eyelids like how a lot of Korean manga do. Is there a way to make that better so it looks less like eyebrows?

>> No.6104115

>>6104093
Depends on if you intend to specialize in painting or manga. If manga, you could crosshatch shading on the eyelids or top of cheeks depending on light source. Painting you would just shade over the eyelids.
