Though that's if you can handle the pressure of drawing content for just that specific community. Then once you've gotten enough people to notice you and your art is "recognizable", people will pretty much start following you everywhere even after you've quit said fandom.

That's a given, but that point can be really high, and you will hit a point where you'll start getting diminishing returns.
When I said hardcore shilling I had Ortamaw in mind, even with 51.7k followers and a decent enough (and baity) art, I was really disappointed by his numbers, and not just twitter. I've seen his posts on specific subreddit communities and only get a couple of replies at best. But maybe it's his fault for trying to appeal to everybody at once. But it is underwhelming nonetheless.
