I don't want to study using that boring shit. I wanted wild and dramatic poses, like the ones you see in baroque art.

I like to attribute it on the lack of visual library we have in our head in looking up at people. Looking front or down is pretty common for our day-to-day lives whilst looking straight up at someone from below is super rare.

I don't even remember when the last time I had to look at someone from that angle. So yeah, definitely just need to draw and study more from that angle. Thanks mate, you too!

I think you made the ribs a bit too small (they also lacked structure). There was flow without structure, I think is the best way I can put it. It is somewhat lacking in perspective as well.
I would recommend you draw the full figure instead of just a part of it, it can be pretty hard, and frustrating, but the more you do it, the better you get.

I don't understand gesture, so you are supposed to plot the line of action, but the line of action is the average of the form? As in not the edge of the skin or clothes? Every line has to be a C S or I and you can't have repetition but what about when the upper and lower arm bend in the same motion?
Should I just trace over photos to get a feel for it and then go back to normal?

Your question is valid, but probably not worth for you to overanalyse! There is certainly no one way to do it but many different interesting approaches which make certain goals with drawing easier than others. My honest recommendation is to just try them when you find them, keep what is fun for you to do or is leading to good results, and shovel the rest to the back of your mind. Once in a while revisit the stuff you put away since with growing ability you can pull new information from the same concepts.

I personally think of gesture as being the most abstract (sometimes rough) representation of both - positioning and movement in space - while still following some sort of repeatable structure in order for you not having to reinvent the process every time and thus maximizing readability while minimizing effort.
I could easily be talking a lot of bs here, but my take is, that a good gesture drawing is the most effective way to evoke a reaction of your sub-/unconcious (idrk I have limited knowledge about each of the brain-sciences). Think of it kind of similar to the reduction of a face to a smiley face / emoji type of representation. It doesnt depict a specific persons likeness but rather an action that each face could be making. It is more about an act than the acting individual itself. It is that essence that you want to grasp. There is not one way to get there.

Stick figure like under sketches seem to be beneficial for drawing with anatomical correctness since even from the beginning you put emphasis on bones and proportions. Tubes and beans probably enhance your intuition for heft and flexibility, therefore dynamics. The body is not a structurelss, wiggly blob, but also not a rock-solid pillar. It certainly is inbetween and you can decide what it is you want to emphasize on. This of course is true for whole drawings and different aspects within one.
The human body consists of many muscular chains which work together in each movement. You bending a knee requires action in calf, upper leg, pelvis region and abdomen (arguably even a lot higher than that) - eventho it looks like only a knee is bending, but the whole body is doing stuffs!
There is certainly a huge array of vectors contributing to each movement, keeping muscles together, providing counter tension and directions. Therefore an analogy like the well known force-technique make sense even from a physiology pov.
All these approaches make sense, but in the end it is about how the indicators on the page cascade into associations that lead to you drawing a cohesive piece that leaves an impression with the audience.

My last point I want to make: Consider the circumstances in which the idea of gesture drawing emerged and evolved: trad art.
When pm each stroke is permanent, it is a safety measure to construct since a mistake could ruin the whole piece and nullify all your investment.
- game over. - start again.
Steps like gesture drawing are check points - effortless to reach stages at which you can evaluate, correct or restart without loosing much of your time, focus or patience. They also provide handles for your brain to hold the paper and construct more and more sense. Did you reach that point with a skeletal structure or a force-approach? - doesnt really matter since they can both lead to the same outcome! The main differences depend on you, your mindset and your personal tendencies. And I think I mean this in a less tangible way: You can't really know what works for you but try it. Keep in mind that a gesture drawing is a throw away product. It is either being overdrawn or tossed completely. There are many interesting ways to do it and each is worth consideration for sure. But it doesnt mean they work for you. Eventho it is fair to assume for a child to be right handed, some simply are not! Concepts and broadly used ideas often work but in the end it is all about you finding a way to understand what you observe. The majority of that route consists of having the exact thoughts and questions that you presented.

Tldr: none of this matters too much. 2 dots can be enough for you to imagine the rest of the figure. just consider the ideas of people who really know the craft but then do and try what you feel like. Dont fall for the fallacy of art only being a straight path. There is not much at risk and you might be able to find what noone has ever thought of (tho arguably not very likely). In case of more questions: read the effing sticky

These are really good. Do you guys use construction for these? I always here conflicting answers on that. Some people say if I don't use construction I won't learn anything from the drawings, others say construction is only useful when drawing from imagination.

> construction is only useful when drawing from imagination.
Yea this. I dont use construction. It takes too long. All the information is already in the drawing in front of you. Not to say that it wouldn’t help, but usually for figure drawing I go for speed over quality. Use negative space to check your shapes, and find a good rhythm for making long lines for the arms, legs and parts of the torso.

Pretty much all the lines that I made are shown, i only erased a couple spots where I messed up some of the placements >>6086209. Maybe there is some construction, maybe there isn’t. Sometimes I like drawing extra lines if the forms aren’t clear. It’s kind of like a nervous habit.

It depends. I work really slow, especially when I want to get anatomy right, I always try to draw all the muscles I know and all that stuff.

I copied a lot of gainax / trigger animation frames when i started drawing. I can’t stand vilppu. I dont know why everyone praises him so much. His teachings make me not want to draw.

But i do a lot of figure drawing. This stack is all figure drawing from this year except for the last level.
