whoa cool im in the OP
>>5977167

>Why are you deliberately trying to change...
I think some strokes are easier! Like the grip I drew really has some strong curved line control and it's a lot easier on my wrists because it encourages more arm use? at least it does for me. I try to always use my wrists as little as possible tho and instead adjust from my elbow.
oh and the grip lets me control my pen more with my fingers so it lessens wrist use even more and it's a pretty lose grip so its easy on my fingers too
i think it's helped my hand cramping a lot too!
>just do it the way I pretty much always did
yeah i think that's really common too. A lotta people i've asked do that and find its just what's most natural to em... I've had a buddy use multiple grips and change his up often. He's like the other side of the spectrum
I see your grip used by artists a lot so i think it's probably a good one? idk a lot about grips, i just think it's really interesting to see what other people do and maybe push em to try new ones.
i think it's always p nice to find somethin new to try when it comes to drawin
>>5977708
could i ask you to draw an example? i know there are people that use different writing grips too and i think it's pretty interesting! like if an artist does really great curved lines or strong solid straight lines, i think their grips probably come into play
>>5977742
sweet!! i hope it works out for you!! :D
>hold the pen further up
i can't hold mine too far back cuz i have small hands but i usually go back to about the middle too... but i dumb and too anal about my lines most of the time so i end up holding it lower like your basic bitch one.
my lower button is swap last used tools so its always gotta be in reach for me
>"God my hand hurts"
>Resting on the pinky
that grip looks scary... is your thumb always outstretched? or is the grip more like controling the pen with your ring and thumb? this grip is kinda rough whew

>> No.5981677

>>5981177
>Resting on the pinky
At some point I found that using the pinky as a pivot let my wrist move more freely, and reduced friction by having a smaller contact surface. When I started using it my hand would often snag a little sometimes but that grip stopped that from happening. I don't do it much any more though because it's really uncomfortable and I think it actually injured my pinky knuckle once. Not sure what my thumb is really doing, but I think it's always pretty outstretched.

Hey this came out great!! Thank you for drawing an example for me. I've seen this grip here and there too. My default one is super similar too, but I rest my pen on my ring finger. Does your grip ever give you a sore bump on your finger? Mine does on my ring finger when I use it too much. I've always been told it's called "writers bump"

Yeah I've got what looks like a smooth "wart" on my pinkie finger! I seem to remember using my pinkie finger as an extensible "tripod" or "stand" rather, circumstantially, but I really can't remember the specifics of when, why or even how. I'll draw that too if it comes to me.

Anyway, very nice art as always. Such long, clean lines and interesting colors.

This made me happy my fren!
The details in the key are a bit ... lackluster (lol which details??). I had fun drawhwing the guy, but when hammer time hit the clock I was being confronted with my weakness in 'hard surface' objects once again. So I lost patience quickly and was kind of happy enough about the perspective working out alright to call it a day for now. Since the key itself is an important focal point in this drawing I think that it should be more detailed than the weilder of this incredibly mighty and of course important object is. LThat would probably evoke the impression of it being an old relic from another world - clearly different to the culture the knight represents. But well... not sure maybe Ill come back to it later. already feeling more inspired about it, so who knows ;)
It was fun trying out different brush settings though. In this case simply more than 3 pt thickness was already an exotic (bold - get it? lMaO) choice for me to make. Felt like a nice early step bridging towards painting from my heavily line work leaning position.

Yeah, it was mentioned last thread too, the I guess uhhh "stabilizer pinky"? I've seen a lot of traditional artists do it, but it was surprising to hear digital artists doing it too
If you do draw it, and no biggie if you don't wanna, but could you show some examples of the most comfortable pen strokes you do with that grip?
I have kinda small hands so I don't think the pinky tripod will help me very much but idk maybe I'm doing it wrong or maybe my hands really do be too small...
but I think I'm good on line control?
Maybe?
When I'm doing precise lines sometimes I just lock up my arm joints. Not sure how to really explain it but its like when people do the robot?? I'll do more pivoting from my elbow and occasionally from my shoulder
No idea if it's good for me to do so often.... buuuuuuiut pretending my arm is a robo-arm has gotten me this far sooooo....
Waiting for my laser eyes upgrade

thanks man :D

Yeah it looks great and it's good to think about all those little tertiary details like that.. Adding "story" to your work even if it's just a one-off drawing. Not only is it a good mental exercise but it can help you get a strong result just as you have here.

>>5990701

Came in and drew for a bit after work but I I had to get rid of it; I really have forgotten how to draw (figures) in many ways. It is often said that if you don't keep up with it you may have to kind of start again from a lower rung on the ladder. I just have to re-familiarize myself with a structured manner in how to go about it all, I guess.

Yeah instead of jumping to a ban, maybe try talking to the guy? It can be hard to gauge how big you're drawing in Drawpile if you don't have a point of reference. I've seen some servers use their server logo as an example and they list how big it is near the logo. Could help?

I agree that the drawpile should never ban someone for their skills. It's just not the philosophy of the place and creates a precedent that may make new people decide not to join in or feel unconformable with their skills and all that jam.

That said, it is true that the subjects of interest of that guy are rather particular.
And while the guy seems harmless he smells like assburghers.

I don't think he's ban worthy (yet), it would be nice to see him draw different things (and he's done so: I remember being surprised by a train he's made.) If only to make the drawpile not look like a DeviantArt tier thing to the eyes of the people who may want to join. One can't deny that his drawings tend to jump to the eye, afterall. Be it the size of the subjects or the size of the drawings or the 'style'.

So basically, it's a toss of having the canvas being a place one can feel somewhat free of skill level judgment and keeping the image of the drawpile being clean enough to keep people coming in and feed the project alive.

Talk to him, tell him people complained (wich is true) and see how he reacts.

Sure, I'd be uncomfortable drawing on a pure furry server... but this? How is this a huge deal? Can't you just accept people are different and most of them are strange anyways? How are you personally taking damage from one guy? Seems way more an autistic reaction than drawing sweaty tiddies itself...
Just respectfully tell him to draw smaller and if he reacts counterproductively consider harsher measures.
Trying to bully them into leaving by making it this huge 'autistic thing' here is also such a dick move and I find you reprehensible for hiding behind anonymoty and still trying so rigorously trying to stir things around. Seriously just stop being such a narrow-minded fanatic about it and treat the other pilers as humans as long as possible before being a smartass and trying to activate an authority to solve your personal fucking problems. >Little to no lag with the right moderation

>Everyone shares layers but layers can be claimed/locked
>You can toggle if other artists are visible
And I'm sure there are is a lot more. For me the only pluside to Aggie is it works on mobile. But often if I draw with anyone on Aggie, its usually to do pixel art.

Hrmmmmmm.... I think that depends on a lot of different variables?
like it really depends on just what im studying bc i think my approach varies. sometimes i like to try and break down in my head what their step by step process could have been, or sometimes im looking at very specific things an artist does. How they do their composition, how their shapes go, where their strokes naturally thicken or thin, their forms, coloring, shadows, highlights, design.... I have ADHD so uhhh i kinda think about a lot of things and as many things as i can think about when im studying a specific artist.
often doing redraws on my own time to try and replicate their art, but i'd replicate it while also building from my own theorized construction. i think this would probably be my best way to study in general? often times i'll replicate as much of an image as i can instead of just what i want to focus on too.
honestly i havent sat down and done a good study in a while so i'm not totally sure if this is a good answer?? ive always been self taught so im sorry i cant really explain in the best of ways.
my general day to day study is just
>surround myself in high quality art (to me)
>every social media platform of mine is often full of drawings
>whenever im scrolling and a drawing makes me stop for more than a few seconds to look at it i'll keep looking for a while more
>every drawing i look at i try and list a positive and a negative
>something the artist did good and something they could work on

>actual studying is mostly recreating another artist's drawings and/or process if possible
>im often taking note of shape, forms, unique lighting, strong lighting/shadows, bold compositions, silhouette
>also on the look for unique styles good or bad or weird

uhhh yeah not sure if this is really a good answer i think i rambled a little bit but if you could be more specific about the subject of study that'd make it a little easier to explain??
im kinda just always studying art 24/7

>> No.6038447

>>6038327
Wow, I didn't expect such a complete and quick answer, so depending on the subject there are different ways to study it,
>if you could be more specific about the subject of study that'd make it a little easier to explain??
it's anatomy in general, I was trying to study the simplification of bodies that some artists that I like do and in parallel trying to make Morpho's construction method work.

Aw man I'm so sorry for the slow reply, I saw your reply and felt so bad haha you had some good timing last time is all

But there are definitely different ways to study. I mean, every artist has their own little ways of doing things. If I'm struggling to understand something, I usually go find other resources by other people.
I've seen a few resource books that kinda just... Didn't teach a subject very well or skipped some important layers of construction.
I managed to skim Morpho's work a little bit but I'm not sure I can really offer much advice with this one... What exactly are you struggling with? Could you provide an example page? What sort of simplification do you have in mind? I can try and explain how I'd go about studying a specific thing from Morpho and maybe that could help?

I really haven't had much time to draw so I'm feeling pretty rusty and not very confident I can be of much help though...

dont take this guy >>6072541 too seriously! he is kind of our token 'tistic guy... he has enormously strong opinions about anything (really) and much dislikes or even hates anything that is beyond his strictly structured understanding.
Id personally read his message like that: he has a PERSONAL distaste for the stylistic elements in the drawing at hand. What he enjoys is usually very binary and easily understandable, one could say unambiguous, I think.

I dont expect it to be really neccessary for me to write this reactionary text since you handled his critique well, but I decided to take the risk of being the idiot who wasnt even asked since I wanted to be sure such a self-important of a comment like his wont be taken at face value. my sense of justice has been triggered... I just had to relativate! He can have interesting observations at times, but shouldnt be considered canon... I think you are fine though anyways.

Aw man... I wanna say I've been using drawpile on and off since maybe 2015? 2016? I only started using Drawpile as my main program around 2019-2020-ish I think
Fond memories... My memory isn't the best but I'm sure I've had plenty. I've did plenty of drawn roleplays in random servers back in the day! But it always bums me out doing those in Drawpile because they rarely ever save each turn they just keep redrawing/drawing for the next scenes :') my poor memory weeps....
So I slowly started doing those less, but drawing my avatars onto pre-existing backgrounds with multiple different poses was a great exercise! If I had to do it all over again, I'd still participate in em
I suppose one time stood out to me, I was a stowaway in a large ship, but we got attacked by some wizard? The memories a bit fuzzy, but I remember having a blast with the exchange... Not really sure how it ended, but the ship definitely took a lotta damage! Think I might've thrown someone at the wizard..... Lots of dodging and comedic bits strewn about, everyone was having a great time. I've hung out plenty with closer friends too and pulled some shenanigans. Used to bring pre-rendered backgrounds in for everyone to do little collaborate group pics with, those were lots of fun too

I've had plenty of fun times in Drawpile! It's just a shame my memory isn't the best so I can't share a bunch of the tales, but I know if had plenty of fun joining random servers and hanging out
Sometimes public drawpile servers can be a handful, but as long as you're not lookin to make trouble, they're actually pretty chill most of the time (or a little too chill if everyone is roleplaying and doing their own things). Uhhhh I met the animator GingerPale once, he's a p chill dude! It was a fun night. Someone drew a little boxing ring and we did random little quick fights... It was a little clunky, but still pretty fun! I definitely wouldn't be where I am if I had never used Drawpile

I used to draw a lot in the drawpile when it was in its worst state (about to close for good), to be honest, there are so many good artists in the pile that i don't feel like drawing on it anymore, but that's because I'm becoming schizophrenic because of my own inability to draw.

What if we started doing collab backgrounds? Team up with the OC drawthread and see how many characters we can fit in the background? Like a big group pic. The background could be expanded and added upon too

Aw thanks man, just kinda bothers me cuz it's a drawpile thread. Kinda feels like more art from the board could be used for bumping but it's also reasonable to worry if someone wants something posted here or not...
Wish I had more time and energy to come on and draw
But I'll still be here bumpin away
>>6078160
He's sure is a cutie. There's been an amazing artist on the /b/ drawthreads as of late that draws a lot of Lee. Not sure if they want socials dropped, and I know /b/ drawthreads suck most of the time, but their art is worth lurking for I think
Really solid work
>>6078944
Maybe I'm buttin my nose in where it shouldn't... And I know it's a lot easier said than done... But I don't think art quality really matters for drawpiles? At least to me, the most fun I have is when I get to collaborate with other artists in some way. I don't think my art is all that special or anything, but I personally like interacting w artists of any skill level.
Plus, drawing more is always good!
I hope you'll participate again sometime. Not like I've been able to lately either, but it's always more fun the more artists there are. Regardless of their skill level!!
Everyone's got their good and bad quirks w art, but as long as someone can tell what your drawing is, I think that's all you really need (on a basic level/for drawpiles).
Plus plus you can get real time feedback sometimes! I've done that a lot for friends and peers and it can be engaging watching other people do their studies and study along as well
I hope you are able to push past your anxieties over drawing with artists that (may or may not) have more skill than yourself. I used to feel a weird similar bitterness from time to time, but I think my art and mental health really did improve for the better when I managed to push past it and realize it was just me being silly and putting another wall around myself that had no purpose bein there.
Uhhh I'm rambling here but yeah
>TLDR
hope to see ya around anon!

My rule of thumb is
>When in doubt, don't draw bigger than the biggest drawing
>Or second biggest
>Or stick to the average of everyone else's sizes

Or really I'll just use the select box tool, select the area, copy visible in the edit drop-down menu, and paste it somewhere else and check how big the space was. Takes some practice w the program w a consistent board and brush size to get the feel of it I think? Some people also base it on zoom percent (like "don't draw bigger than 40% zoom" or something) but I think screen sizes vary too much to really rely on that? At least I know my window sizes vary a lot bc I usually have two windows open on my laptop so I couldn't rely on zoom percent

I don't think you need to worry? As long as one single drawing isn't taking up like 25% of the board (which is still fine in some cases?) I think you'll be fine. The board gets wiped every Sunday and then the following Monday for the week. So the closer we get to Saturday, the more space you can use
And definitely don't worry if the board is mostly empty! Drawpile boards are at their best when they have lots of drawings

Thanks!
The Poison Apple Men are actually from a comedy manga called Sleepy Princess In The Demon Castle, by the way. It's a pretty funny series. They're such minor characters that when I was looking for reference I could only find one image of them using image search, lol.

I think I've seen people rig it for mobile devices? I have no idea how to do it though but I'm pretty sure it's possible. Drawpile For Mobile(tm) has been in the works for years though so I'm not sure if it'll happen anytime soon
>>6124849
I think I know the exact frame actually... Love me some FLCL
>>6125520
I suppose mine are more towards winging it? But not really? I do a LOT of pre-construction in my head and sometimes I do it on my canvas and just Ctrl+z a lot. I kinda view drawing as like sculpting something out of clay? Uhhh not sure how to elaborate on that rn BUT I also say kinda winging it because like for
>>6122877 I'm overly familiar with the characters shapes already so I can mostly "wing it" but I still do some construction in my head or as I work along. But
>>6124684 was actually a quick gesture of mine to begin with but I took a little more time on the left side before scrapping. But like waist down it was super quick gesture stuff. Just trying to lay down the ground work of the post I want and then, like clay, I kinda go back in and adjust things and redraw things. The most important part to me is getting that initial concept I have in my head down or conveying good gesture and silhouette
So idk if "winging it" is the best way to put it? I've draw a LOT of construction and shapes and forms and I have a lot of line patterns down so my entire process is generally faster buuuut it's only bc I've drawn a L O T of varied things with varied forms and styles
>>6125607
Fight on anon!! Keep drawing!!
>>6125696
Not sure if it helps any but there are different domain hosts you can use for drawpile besides the default drawpilenet. Some hosts have more lenient rules but they have less traffic...
But I think this server is pretty chill

>Thread about to dead
D-Do I make a new one...? I can make a new one... Uhhhh..... uuuuhhhhh... sorry Loomis-sensei.... it won't be as charming as your OPs...
I'll make one tonight

Yeah I've tried a couple of different servers but usually they are dead and the ones I used to frequent went down recently. Was seriously considering just making my own if I didn't find a new one.
