also making it is alot more about being social and networking.

But pros wouldn't mind if you know secrets and tips. A good one is this: if you're having trouble with the pose get a reference or use a 3D model to get the basic pose down and then work on top of it as you need. I don't do it often but every now and then a pose really tricks me out and I gotta do it.

You would be surprised how many give vague advice or dance around the secrets question like a politician just to avoid giving out any useful information. They do exist and they do care, because they are very insecure people that don't want any more competition than they already have. I remember speaking to a few of them my senior year, school would invite them out for graduations to network with us and show our final portolios off. They were miserable people (and while drinking got a little too honest), if you asked them for any tips or critiques they would get snarky and say shit like "I dont give any advice or secrets away especially to new blood. You guys are threatening my job. I'm here to network with other professionals and get myself a good job at a studio"

there are no secrets, except maybe don't bother buying the gumroads or whatever from each professional unless he specifically teaches you about his rendering techniques. but even this can be learned just from careful observation and practice.

anything with construction of anatomy and other fundamentals they have straight ripped from loomis, hampton or vilppu OR they make up some half baked explanation that you can learn better from the 3 listed.

well i guess there is this one secret: they know most people are lazy as fuck, have a huge ego/mentally ill/too dumb to improve, and/or are typically sensitive/overly critical about themselves to a point that they cripple their own progress.

that's why professionals aren't afraid to leak any "secrets" and why there is so many available resources out there. because 99% of the people will squander their teaching, and maybe the 1% is truly gmi because they applied themselves.

>> No.5229901

I feel like rendering is a pretty big secret. It's the best way to learn planes and forms and cross-contours, and building your drawing up from big forms to specifics.

People always talk down on rendering like somehow its just "icing" on the cake when really there could be nothing more taxing of your drawing skills than rendering. You should be both doing long figure poses (3-4 hrs) and shorter figure poses (5-110 minutes) to get a more well rounded drawing education.

>> No.5229903

>> No.5229906

The only good figure drawing book is Figure Drawing Manual by Finnish artist and instructor Glenndrew Villoos, who learned under Repin after he fleed Soviet Union. Book itself was never finished, but there are limited reprints of the original manuscript circulating within the industry and among the professionals. The rest books are memes and beg bait.

Small tehcnical limitations and settings in digital makes artists take certain shortcuts that simplifies their art a lot, not in terms of the amout of lines, but the actual detail and thought behind on the model. If you started out trad, you would spend more time on not taking those sjortcuts, or polishing the work as you go along, but if you only even touched digital you will likely make those mistakes.
This isn't actually a pro secret, more so an observation from someone that does both. Open up jump, you might be able to see what I mean.
Not trashing digutal btw, just that you should learn some trad, because certain things you can almost always only learn in trad

>Study...but not too much! Avoid burnout! if you don't feel like it, don't draw! Take things slowly! Just draw what you want! If you're just drawing, you're improving

I see this shit said by every professional in an AMA. Then, they get asked about what their training regime was and go on to say how brutal it was (and then condemn it saying "it was unessisary"- this is obviously retarded because if it wasn't necessary they wouldn't be doing the fucking ama). This is either a conscious lie to keep training artists down to thin out the competition, or an unconscious lie to downplay their struggles making them look more humble in return

The secret is that growth as an artist takes an intensely focused effort and the sacrifice of time, and potentially the sacrifice of your health and relationships. Everyone seems to want to ignore this ugly side but doing so is a denial of the mileage and concerted work necessary for growth. Everyone, whether other artists or normies want you to take things easy. This is how you end up in your 30's, poor as shit not doing anything with your life. Time keeps passing and more and more people are urging artists to remain complacent so they can retain their own jobs and positions

any advice that isn't "work as much as possible, keep your head down, study, push yourself constantly and focus on improving your weaknesses and bolstering your strengths" is empty and negligent. The path to success is built on a mountain of hard work and lesser artists you have trampled through your efforts

>> No.5232688

nah you’re just a retard that doesn’t understand not everything is black and white. You don’t have to grind like an autist but you shouldn’t just say “fuck it don’t feel like it” every day and expect to get better. You should push yourself but giving yourself strict times to hit isn’t gonna make you better if it makes you miserable

>> No.5232706

>>5232670
It's a matter of balance, you should spend at least 50% of your time just drawing what you want to draw without restraint, taking it easy doesn't mean you should be complacent and taking learning less seriously.
And most importantly keep a healthy lifestyle because it will improve skill retention and motivation, 3 hours of focused practice in the morning and 5 hours of loose sketching will teach you far more than 8 hours of droning and grinding.
