There's a difference, I think.

To create an image, you need to form lines and shapes on a canvas, with or without colors. That's the name of the game.

To do this convincingly or aesthetically, you need to ask critical questions about how to overcome your visual bias and draw what you see or imagine accurately. Some people do this with construction, others use grids or tracing, some choose to use 3D software, while most people use a variety of these techniques.

Nearly everyone uses references of some kind. Those who are at a level where they can draw without reference are doing some kind of internal dialog where they are querying their visual memory. You *have* to reset your eye and stop seeing "apple" and instead see "warped sphere with a cylindrical stem". It will improve your visual memory *and* your drawing.

Because you're not doing these things, it suggests that you are not problem solving, which suggests a low visual IQ. If a program has a bug, you hunt it down with deduction. If your drawing sucks, you don't know how to correct it and give up and shitpost on /ic/.

I don't think one improves in art. They improve in abstract areas, which ultimately has the same result.

For example, nobody gets good at painting a bowl of fruit. They get good at delineating the shapes and coloring them in.

If you're not improving, it's because you're not being abstract and problem solving.

It's a very subtle difference that's hard to articulate.

Here's what I want you to do, as a last ditch effort.

Find a reference you like. Print it off. In fact, print several.

Now get a stack of pencils and paper.

You are going to plan every single god damn shape on that reference -- using a ruler. First, you're going to draw tangents to the curves on your reference. It's going to look like a bargue plate (picrel -- on the left). Then you're going to sight-size the silhouette you've made onto a new sheet of paper. You are not going to accept your first attempt. Or even your first 100 attempts. You are going to keep doing it until you have it correct. End of story.

Then you are going to proceed shading it in. If you fuck it up, start over. But only after you've shaded the entire thing in. Do not come back to this board until you have finished your first completed rendering. None of these unfinished sketches you've been posting.

The entire project should take you no less than 100 hours of work. Drawing doesn't happen on the scale of minutes, and sometimes it takes hundreds, maybe thousands, of failures to get a result that you're comfortable with.

You arent learning to draw for the sake of drawing, you learning to draw so you could tell stories. Its two completely different things.
My advise: learn to ENJOY drawing as is. If not, you will become more and more upset with each mistake and failure, it might even come to the point when holding pencil is painful. Thats what happened to me anyway.

And also try being "creative" (whatever that means) and begin to actually make comics. Yes, they most likely will look like shit, but this is a step in the right direction.

Look, the only way you'll feel better and happy is to seek professional mental health. They're here to help you. They will never do harm to you, no matter what you're telling yourself or whoever is telling you this. There's telltale signs of schyzophrenia in your art. It's not the end of the world! My friend has it, and he has a stable job as a music producer.

You improve by comparison. Sure you'll feel inferior, but think of it as the first step toward improvement. It clearly defines the gap you need to cross to reach your goal.

You can use references or other art pieces to compare. Look for changes in shape and values. Also study the nature of physics in the reference (EXTREMELY important for realistic depictions), such as light, weight and materials.

If you want to draw from imagination then you'll also have to gather world knowledge - this includes studf like anatomy and engineering. This allows you to create familiar stuff without adhering completely to a reference.

OP I resonate with you. Many people call you a whiner and they say mean things and you have to accept that what they say is true if you're constantly making threads like this.
However, what should practice is mindfulness. You're too far in your own head. This leads to self-doubt. You fish for compliments to try to feel better, but they don't do anything for you. You fish for people telling you to give up, that you're garbage, that you're worthless etc. to affirm your worldview, even though you know it hurts you. Its neurotic, and I understand what you're going through because I am the same way. I started practicing art because I needed to do something amazing. It didn't even matter what I did, I just needed to do something to ensure that people like me, and think I'm great. However this is a perversion of the love of art. Even now I still have the part of my mind that is screaming and yelling at me, telling me that I have to be the best, otherwise no one will love me, but at the same time telling me that I'll never be the best. There's no way you can properly improve with this emotional distress in the back of your mind. Try to start taking time out of your day to meditate. Try to focus on catching and stopping your mind when its trying to feed your self-doubt. You have to be able to believe in yourself otherwise you're always going to have this shadow of self-doubt looming over you, holding you back.
To be honest, I have to thank you. Seeing your thread has given me a new perspective on my own problems since I believe we are alike.

Where do you want to improve on? If you're talking about art in general, then that's a little harder but keen observation will teach you skills that you'll be sure adapt into your drawings. I'll say, I don't always recommend going off of photos as references for a beginner since you're essentially comparing your 2D rendition to another 2D work. The experience of rendering a live 3D model onto a 2D space forces you to learn things without always checking to see how well you copied a photo 1:1.
