Too many people (especially on /ic/) think that large social media following somehow translates into success, or that it will be the answer to all their problems. They think that if they build up their following, the commissions will start rolling in, art directors will discover them, they'll be able to build up their Patreon, etc.

These things happen, sure, but for a vast majority of people, the frequency of these passive opportunities will not happen enough to sustain yourself on their own. You must be putting in effort outside of social media. If you want to freelance, for example, you must be compiling your work into a portfolio and pitching it to art directors on a regular basis. If you want to build up a Patreon, you need to be laser focused in your intent and lean in hard to a specific niche for a long time, and never stray from it. I see a lot of Patreons here, linked from blogs that are full of scattered and unfocused work that will inevitably go nowhere.

If possible, try taping the drawing to a wall, I find it reduces the shade your body makes onto the surface. grab the photo and take it to an image-editing app/software. lower saturation to the max, raise contrast and brightness to your liking.

there's and app called snapseed that has some really cool features. one of them lets you add brightness to the corners of your photos.

I doubt the majority starts drawing porn/lewd just for the sake of it. You can pretty much see it in the periodical anon's aversion to porn.
First they say/think coom or any form of blatant pandering is bad, then they lurk more, they figure out how the game is really played and with high probability, start doing it themselves.

I don’t want to make money but like drawing fanart because I like the IP or a particular design. I use fanart as an end to a means of study, it gives me a more interesting goal than future study #1579. well, if you want to sell work based on skill, then obviously you have to be incredibly skilled and there's no way around that. but it's not like they just grinded in a dark room for 10 years before they started making any money - sometimes you take on freelance projects that are in the realm of what you're studying anyway, you can do commissions or offer tuition (either directly or in the form of general video lectures or gumroad shit.) right now these artists sell artbooks and they can do that because they've developed a brand for themselves around the quality of their work, but many of them did other things before they got there. there are a million different projects happening right now which are using an artist for something. making money is about putting yourself in front these people and making them pay you. it's not the same as generic content paid for by the masses, but it's totally valid and makes up a significant proportion of int artist work

Yeah, stylized stuff is much more suitable for creating a fanbase. I guess the best thing you can do is to have a balance of both more detailed artworks along with quicker more stylized stuff.
It would be a shame if you completely neglected one aspect of your art. On the other hand you can always go back to your roots once you achieve financial success.
