Share pieces with interesting, bold, strong composition.
Bonus for variety and not the same few artists.

I really like screenshotting composition shots from everything I see, trailers, movies, etc. All those direction lines and contrasting is mesmerizing.

>> No.5211692

>>5211686
good shapes with interesting perspective/overlap and usually an emphasis on some type of contrast (warm/cold colours, high/low detail, light/dark values, Big/small shapes..)
as a general rule of thumb, if it looks interesting in a small thumbnail, it's due to good composition

>> No.5211696

no I think you went too far the other way, the correct position should be somewhere in between. was looking for a more technical perspective analysis alone the lines of scott robertson's drawing book

Good composition will look interesting or appealing on an abstract level.
As the other anon mentioned, viewing as a thumbnail helps.
Things that help decide this are distribution of detail, negative space, contrasts and rhythms in shapes, line, value, color. Usually there's a focal point or 'statement' being made, which is reinforced by surrounding elements or contrast.
Our brain enjoys patterns and variety, so repetition and big-medium-small shapes factor in.
I'm not good at explaining and not very good myself, so look into Framed Ink and Devin Korwin's Fundamentals books.

Here are some compositions I personally enjoy. What I appreciate about composition is it's so fundamental that a strong composition appeals to me regardless of subject matter or style.

>> No.5211780

>>5211702
I would say so.
A lot of graphic shapes.
They emphasised straight lines, angles, and more rigid flat shapes. Which are then contrasted by the softer more organic face and hand.
The face markings, embellishment and snake add small, more detailed elements of interest on an otherwise fairly plain image.

is it though? the blank in this case adds almost nothing imo, at what point is it that you are just inserting a "normal" image into a bigger canvas in the name of composition

Contrast, adds a sense of scale is the big one. Detail leads our eyes to the focal point.
Also remember these are concept sketches, I imagine if this was to be put onto a wall, surrounding areas would be given more care. Composition is solid imo.

Yeah, I like this one the most but they're all nice. That's one thing I find the most difficult about composition actually, picking one to go with out of multiple versions.
But maybe it doesn't matter that much as long as it looks appealing.
