does anyone have that post/link to the blog of the guy who went to art schools and no one knew how to draw anymore? As in, the professors even admitted to him that they had 'lost' the methods because *their* professors had rejected academic methods back in the 70s and pushed them out of the university system?

It used to float around here a lot but I lost it. Also interested in any writing about or from that time of 'pushing out' of academic techniques from universities.

posting some neat paintings in return.

I guess also just feel free to post paintings you like in here, as long as they're representational. timing doesn't matter, recent or not.

I don't have it either but the specific page you're looking for is from Richard William's Animator's Survival Kit. He talks about being asked to give a lecture at an art school, checks student's portfolios but can't find any solid pieces of draftsmanship because, paraphrasing, the rich students who paid tuition and funding didn't want to learn how to draw but how to decorate themselves.
You might also be thinking of a bit from Burne Hogarth's introduction in his anatomy book where he laments how the study of draftsmanship has gotten less formal in art schools, written back in the 50's/60's.

I've heard several stories similar to this. You get a lot of these people who end up not teaching solid drawing/painting skills and instead end up teaching "creativity". Because this is taught as the "system", several graduate and then end up teaching. A huge reason they end up teaching is simply because their work is shit and nobody will buy it. Thus perpetuating the cycle.

You'll have more decent artists out there working and making money (whether painting portraiture, doing concept art/illustration, or other forms of commissions) than actually teaching. They have no need to teach, and those that do teach tend to suck.

Of course, this isn't 100% true, since there are many ateliers out there that still teach you proper technique.

But in short: Most formal art schools are a waste of time because the teachers suck. Those that they teach also suck, so they end up teaching more than creating decent work.

Yeah, I've met some pretty impressive students from my old art school. Though like most who actually found work after school, you can tell they spent more time studying and practicing on their own then others who would only try to excel at school work and do nothing outside of it.

this one makes me sad

it also makes me sad that you can't post it in general without the inquisition accusing it of being strictly for people to derive pleasure from a scene of a woman in pain/dead

In the US this was the norm in all the arts, not just visual. I can confirm that music composition, and theater do the same damn stuff. Actually this lack of trade was the norm in the visual arts until about 20 years ago when the atelier movement began to gain more notoriety though places like Jacob Collins schools, and the Gammel lineage was still word of mouth known. Id say it was around 2010ish when things began to improve to a point where ateliers were well known within the art community.

In the UK university system students who are unqualified for the classes, or just there because they pay tuition are called "bums on on seats"

What are some good books that teach classical draughtsmanship? I've got an OK grip on the fundamentals of drawing already, so something that assumes the reader is above a beginner level would be very helpful!
