Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

You should ask them. There's a difference between "seeking critique and actively wanting to improve" and "being miserable and believing that you have a permanent disadvantage." The people in that thread are squarely in the former camp.

>I know what you're trying to pull off, but no I'm not gonna shitpost /mmg/ because they actually draw and try and I respect that.
I'm not trying to pull anything off, I'm trying to convince you that asian genes are nonsense. The fact that you don't want to go into that other thread because you're afraid of them just telling you to get out seems telling if anything, and makes me question your sincerity here.

Thank you for taking the time to do a redline, I really appreciate it. The camera angle is supposed to be slightly above and to the side, but not very much. Here's what I was thinking with the arm. I traced over a photo I took of myself to show that it's a possible pose. The idea is that her hand is pretty close to the table, but her elbow is also resting directly on the table, which will push her right elbow farther away from her body than her left elbow is. In this position, the forearm won't cover up as much of the upper arm as you have. You positioned her right elbow as close to her body as her left elbow is, so that accounts for some of the difference in how you drew it vs how I drew it.
This camera angle is actually more extreme than what I was going for in the drawing, but a more frontal view would just show more of the upper arm. Anyway regardless of the pose I agree that my original arms don't look good and I need to change them.

here, since i'm trying to get it to look passably close to the source, i guess the layer mode/guess at a layer mode that will approximately replicate the colouring they use. for example, if a solid highlight is blurred out and the blurred part is saturated/deep, i might try a linear light/shade layer or an add/glow layer. then i blob on a colour or three to test what they look like.

I was actually already working (struggling) on the darker values thing, as for the appeal sketch stuff, well i actually didn't really like the face on the sketch because it was more effeminate than what i was going for, and while i understand how some might find that more appealing, i wanted him to look "beautiful", but not "pretty" if that makes sense, and i think a "manlier" nose plays a big role in making that distinction.
honestly my main struggle is the hair, i redid it several times and i still have no idea what I'm doing. i watched several tutorials and stuff and i still don't get how to make it look right, it's frustrating

I actually liked your previous version of his hair better, it had interesting shape designs. Anyway, in general you need to zoom out and start using a big brush to block in your values instead of using tiny brush strokes to draw individual strands with hue variation. Especially with hair, it's better to block interesting shapes in first, then add your hue variations, random strands, etc later. I gave him basic long hair but you get the idea, I see that there's a lot of texture in your style and this paintover might not be in a style you want, but in general it's more about having a good foundation of values before you add the texture and noise back into your art. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks alot i really appreciate you taking the time to do these paintovers and your criticisms are all valid i do have a tendency to rush into detail when my foundations aren't strong and I'm struggling to get rid of that habit.

Hi /asg/.
Have been practicing anime hair shapes on paper recently.
Don't usually draw on a tablet, now trying to transfer that shape practice into digital.
Sorry about really thick lines on fringe, had some pressure setting issues before I found a good middle ground. CSP pencil is fiddly.
Any tips on good shapes for hair clumps?

"Anime" aka "Japanese style" has more to do with their linework and how they construct they drawings than arbitrary conventions such as "a realistic nose isn't anime!!"

They use japanese techniques inherited and refined since Tezuka created his first studio
Limited animation (12 images per seconds, looping)
Emphasis on dramatic poses (key frames) to save the budget by making them the focus point
A certain way of shading the moving objects like the car

In the west we tend to animate every little movement and we don't dramatize poses as a result

It's the same in manga. Araki consistently "looks Japanese" despite following none of the mainstream conventions in shonens

Now compare to realistic western comic books, the feeling is very different

no matter if you NEVER improve in quality, it should be this. no piece of work like this should take a week off your life. at this pace you would take multiple months to make a single chapter of manga. if you want to actually draw manga, you need to increase your speed.

Also, if you're going to work with alcohol markers, I suggest you research how to blend with them. The paper doesn't look very suited for the medium either. You can see puddling in the larger areas of color, like the hat, and there's really bad feathering in the creases of her bodice and the ink smudged around her cleavage.

GAINAX artwork is always really cool to see - but take into account that the art in these shows was tailored to their particular animation style. By which I mean, these are drawings meant for moving pictures, which is why you see a lot of "weird foreshortening". Take a look at other GAINAX shows like Kill La Kill or Gurren Lagann.

Not saying it's a bad thing, just pointing it out so you take it into account. Your studies are really good, and the last page looks nice. Maybe the bottom one on the last page could be fixed a bit by taking the head a bit more "into" the body.

the black lineart makes it look like cheap and inorganic especially around places like the collarbone and armpits, use darker values instead of lines when painting
that's not how the torso and hips connect, it look disfigured.

It's impossible for me to explain what I actually want, but I think you might be able to see what I mean through my work. ears are crooked, and since her head is slightly turned to our right, we shouldn't see both ears head on. her nose is either too high or her mouth is too small. titties aren't bad but her arm pits are too high. the upper arm on the left is curved and the hand is flat. upper arm on the right is too short. rib cage doesn't really make sense. her torso and spine are twisted a bit too far.

Likely one of the basic pens. Probably g pen and / or mapping on a Monochrome canvas.

>>5208588
>I usually make lots of little marks to get them, because g-pen is too thick and hard.

You're likely using the g-pen incorrectly or in a sub-par manner. Much like its real-world counterpart, it's an extremely versatile tool that nonetheless happens to be a bit of a noob trap because you have to think about and use it in a very particular way.

For the digital pen in particular, I find that it helps to think about it more like a "brush" than as a pen. Delicate changes in brush size comes from working at a very small size and with a very delicate hand and attention to pressure (here I kept my brush at 10px on a 5k height canvas; this picture is zoomed in so that you can see the lines a little better. Note that since the g-pen in its default state has a very high taper with a minimum size of "zero," the vast majority of lines here are going to be under 10px due to the nature of pen pressure and inking).

"Re-stroking" to build up specific levels of thickness is a very good technique to use, as is "double-lining" and then filling in-between the lines to create specific line shapes. It's not a brush you can just pick and "go to town" with; it requires that you pay a lot of attention. That said, it isn't good for everything, and it's impossible to tell if it's good for whatever style you're going with without seeing some sort of example. Don't fall into the trap of lessening the taper available to you with the g-pen unless you know what you're doing and want to achieve a specific visual effect; the taper is something you *want* to have. It's where the entirety of the g-pen's strength comes from. If you don't have it, then your lines are going to seem thick and uniform, which you don't seem to want. Instead, work on your ability to control the amount of pressure in your strokes.

breaking down the workflow is fun
this sort of painterly thing is a little troublesome because it can be done in a lot of ways, it's often convenient to look at lines/edges

i'm going to guess they did lines here and put a base + flats down underneath, put some colours on top of the lines, shaded, coloured the lines and erased some edges, did some overpainting

but you can approach these painterly things in a lot of ways, so maybe they blocked out colours above or maybe they did it below the lines/sketch, you might get a similar result both ways

Complete noob here. This took me like 4 hours. I learned a lot. Is there anything redeeming here? I think I need some words of encouragement.

Okie doke. I'll raise it a more and thin her thighs a bit more. Cuz yeah i agree it, after looking at other references it was a bit low. I also don't try to make characters so plump, it just happens naturally and i just roll with it. (Probably from the artist i look at regularly) Anyways, thanks gor the crit fellas.

Looks like "standard" figure you can find in almost any anatomy drawing guide (there is a big archive in artbooks thread). Also try to search 3D scans of real peoples on the Sketchfab, it's pretty useful. Maybe this channel sketchfab.com/human-engine or another.

Quick dumb question, if I rotate an object in that viewer does the eye level change or not?

>> No.5215441

>>5215435
No. There is constant camera height and it looks at the center of viewport (you can zoom model to max to know eye height, for example it can be waist level). To change an eye level you should move a model higher or lower with the right mouse button.

If you mean "is eye level changed relative to model's toes when rotating around X or Y axis" then yes, camera is flying around model at the constant distance from model's center (controlled with mouse wheel zoom). So you should adjust camera (right button) when rotating not around Z (vertical) axis if you want to maintain eyelevel relative to other point than model center..

Is anatomy the main thing that gates anons from making it? Assume style is already taken care of.

Well, yeah I have to agree, but it's not really a fair comparison if I guessed the colors.

Left leg hip looks dislocated, I don't have any references now but unironically go look at thicc thots, porn, whatever girl that looks like this. I also feel like the legs are too far apart at the cunt area? But I don't have experience drawing that so take my words with salt.
